Flathead/Emery Bay
Overview
Emery Bay Campground, often associated with the Flathead National Forest, sits on the scenic shores of the Hungry Horse Reservoir and offers a true Montana wilderness experience for the adventurous traveler. Managed as a Forest Service facility, this destination provides a serene escape for those who value natural beauty and quiet evenings under the stars. It serves as an excellent, less-crowded alternative to the more commercialized areas found directly outside the national park borders, prioritizing a connection with the landscape over modern luxuries.
Location & Surroundings
Tucked away just a few miles south of Martin City, MT, the campground is deeply integrated into the Flathead National Forest. The sites are positioned along the eastern edge of the massive Hungry Horse Reservoir, where dense forests of larch and fir meet the water's edge. The surrounding terrain is defined by the rugged peaks of the Swan Mountains, offering breathtaking views and a distinct sense of isolation that is hard to find in more developed areas, making it feel like a true hidden gem in Big Sky Country.
Amenities & Park Features
The facilities at Emery Bay are intentionally simple to preserve the wilderness character of the area. Travelers will find vault toilets and hand-pumped potable water located throughout the loops, though there are no electric or sewer hookups available. Each individual site is designed to be functional for the self-contained RVer and features:
- A sturdy picnic table for outdoor dining.
- A heavy-duty fire ring for evening campfires.
- Access to shared hand-pumped water stations.
Because this location is active wildlife territory, the park provides bear-resistant food lockers and requires campers to follow strict food storage protocols to keep both humans and grizzly bears safe.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Water recreation is the primary draw here, with the Hungry Horse Reservoir providing endless opportunities for paddling, motorized boating, and swimming. Anglers often visit to test their luck with native trout species in the deep mountain waters. For those looking to explore further, the West Entrance of Glacier National Park is less than thirty minutes away. This proximity allows visitors to enjoy world-famous hiking trails and the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road during the day before returning to the peaceful solitude of the reservoir in the evening.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is best suited for self-contained RVers who appreciate a back-to-basics approach to camping. If you enjoy waking up to the sounds of nature rather than highway traffic, you will find this park incredibly rewarding. It is particularly popular among boating and fishing enthusiasts who want direct access to the water via the on-site launch. Those seeking a rustic, off-the-grid experience near some of Montana's most iconic landscapes will find Emery Bay to be an ideal home base for their North Country adventures.

Nice wooded campground on the reservoir. Quirky hosts but who isn't...If you're not prepared for a dusty, washboard road in with your RV, don't visit. Be courteous, drive slow and if you can, let the cars go by.

Nice campsites tucked away in the woods above the lake. And great how Montana keeps a portion of campgrounds available for first-come-first-served patrons. Hosts were super nice...

Very friendly camp hosts! The campground was kept real clean, the outhouses were very clean and smelled fairly nice most of the time! This is one of our favorite spots to camp!!! Especially this summer 2025

10+ spots open, but reserved for campers that never showed. Settled for a spot 15 feet from another camper. No view of lake from 65% of campsites. I asked about a veteran discount and the old man asked if I had my VA disability card. I said yes. His Mother from inside her host camper screamed "NO! We don't do that here" payed 22$ for a site. He had no issues with a disabled veteran discount, she did.

Small campground only 25 sites. It’s not worth the ride to this campground. The dirt road was absolutely terrible getting to the campground. Even going 10 mph I was afraid to bust up my vehicle. If you go you have been warned. I had a reservation and didn’t even stay. D U M P

Beautiful area! We were in camp spot 2 and loved it. There was a trail right behind the campsite that had a view of the reservoir that was really peaceful. The site itself was spread out from the other campsites which we loved. It was a short walk to get to the beach/ boat launch. The bathroom was clean and had water behind it. The host stopped by and made sure everyone was bear aware. We were able to hang both our hammocks right behind our tent. The campsite and a good spot for the tent and came with a picnic table and fire pit. We did not have cell service while there.

Campground itself was fine. Problem was the dirt potholed and washboard Forest Service road you have to travel down to get to the camp ground. It rattled items out of cabinets going in and a heavy rain while we were there didn't improve the condition of the road before we left. I realize that a blading would eliminate the problem and probably wouldn't even mention this issue if it weren't for others also complaining of the same issue over time. That tells me blading isn't being done on a regular basis.

The campground managers were super nice and friendly. The outhouses were very clean and smelled nice - considering 😁 Everything was well maintained. We got a site adjacent to the lake with a beautiful view. Watch for bears and don't leave your stuff out. However, the fire wood onsite for sale is sheit! $6 for a bundle of round logs that won't catch easily.
