Flathead/Holland Lake
Overview
Holland Lake Campground offers a serene escape into the heart of the Swan Valley in Montana. Located within the Flathead National Forest, this destination is renowned for its crystalline waters and dramatic mountain backdrops. Travelers seeking an authentic outdoor experience will find themselves surrounded by towering larches and ponderosa pines, creating a tranquil atmosphere far removed from busy highways. The crisp mountain air and the rhythmic sounds of the forest provide a quintessential Montana camping experience where the focus remains on the surrounding natural landscape and peaceful solitude.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near the community of Condon, MT, the park sits at the base of the Swan Range. The geography is defined by the narrow corridor between the Mission Mountains and the Swan River. This location serves as a primary gateway to the Bob Marshall Wilderness, offering some of the most pristine and protected forest land in the United States. Visitors often remark on the stunning glacially carved basin that holds the lake, which creates a dramatic contrast between the deep blue water and the rugged, snow-capped peaks that tower over the shoreline.
Amenities & Park Features
As a National Forest site, the facilities emphasize a rustic, nature-first approach to camping. The campground provides several spacious RV sites tucked into the timber, offering excellent privacy compared to typical commercial parks. While it is important to note that full hookups are not provided, guests have access to essential utilities and features including:
- Access to potable water and vault toilets
- Designated boat launch for lake access
- Large sites with heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for many is the Holland Falls National Recreation Trail, a popular hike that rewards visitors with a breathtaking waterfall and a panoramic view of the lake valley. Anglers frequently visit to test their luck with various trout species, while the calm morning waters are ideal for non-motorized recreation. Activities include:
- Kayaking and paddleboarding on Holland Lake
- Fishing for bull and cutthroat trout
- Exploring the extensive Bob Marshall Wilderness trail system
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal match for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize scenery and outdoor recreation over high-end resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to disconnect from digital distractions and immerse themselves in forest activities like swimming and hiking. Because of its quiet nature, it is also highly recommended for nature photographers and those seeking a quiet basecamp for exploring the Flathead National Forest without the heavy crowds often found in nearby Glacier National Park.

Great low-intensity hike with a large waterfall at the end of the trail.

What a wonderful hike. Beautiful scenery the whole way. Drive past the lodge to the end of the road and the trailhead is right there. Stay to the right, trail is easy to find and easy to stay on. We saw a loon. It took us (2 50-somethings and 2 kids about an hour and 45 minutes (3.2 miles round trip, 1.6 mi each way). We hiked on a weekday afternoon in September and only saw 5 other hikers.

Bathrooms at the trailhead were not the cleanest and had no toilet paper. However the hike was absolutely stunning. The majority of the elevation gain comes in the second half. The falls are roaring this time of year and it was a little chilly which is the perfect hiking weather! Beware of ticks!

This is a beautiful hike along the lake with easy grading up to the bottom of the falls. If you really want to see the falls and the main pool you will have to climb up a fairly steep and rocky part…it can be a tad slippery closer to the water but well worth it. The spray really cools you off for the hike back out. There are some cute chipmunks that obviously have been fed that are super friendly and curious, too.

It was an easy hike up to the falls. You get an excellent view of Holland Lake and the mountains. It was so beautiful. We enjoyed that even more than the waterfall. Our whole family enjoyed this hike.

Breathtaking views without the strenuous hike! Accessibility info and site description of the day use area/picnic site: The road is paved most of the way there- no treacherous forest service roads to get to this location. Follow the signs to the day use area, just past the first campground. The parking lot is an open, dirt-covered area and does not have disabled/van-accessible parking spaces. The short trail to the recreation area is a wide dirt/gravel path that goes from the parking lot up and over a small hill to the large entrance sign. Once there, the public restroom is to the left, and two picnic areas are up on the hill on either side. Continuing toward the lake, there is no particular trail. The landscape slopes downhill and the ground is mostly grassy. Two benches offer a beautiful view of the lake, or continue heading down toward the lake to find additional picnic tables to the left and right. At the waterline, there's a small gravel beach area that has soft, uneven terrain. Total distance from the center of the parking area to the edge of the lake is about 350 feet. There is a $5 day use fee. This was my first time visiting Holland Lake and I loved it so much we went back the next day! We brought a wheelchair for my husband's grandma, and didn't have too much trouble pushing the wheelchair until we got close to the picnic tables on the right side by the lake, where there were some soft spots and and roots/pinecones. The only area I had difficulty walking was the gravel beach area, as the ground was soft and uneven. It was surprisingly quiet and peaceful while we were there, with only a couple of other visitors coming and going, though I imagine it's a different experience in the summer months.

If you keep going past the paid sites there are some free ones that are a little bit tucked away and are absolutely stunning like the rest of the land.

Beautiful hidden gem by the scenic route. Must visit.

This a wonderful campground! The campground hosts; Denise and Bob, were absolutely AMAZING!!! They checked on us when they drove by to see if we needed anything, we needed firewood and Bob was so kind he brought it to us!! FANTASTIC SERVICE! The bathrooms were the BEST I'VE EVER SEEN, they were cleaned multiple times a day, smelled good (imagine that a campground bathroom smelling good, well it's true!), & no bugs! The views are so beautiful and the lake water is pristine! Don't miss this beautiful campground and make sure you take the hike to the Holland Falls, breath-taking views! Will come again and RECOMMEND to EVERYONE! Thanks for such a wonderful experience!

This place has the most beautiful view! We stopped in to have lunch and continue on our way. Found a picnic table by the water and enjoyed the scenery. The campground was full and looked like each site had plenty of space.
