Flathead Lake/West Shore

Overview

Flathead Lake State Park’s West Shore unit offers a rugged and authentic Montana experience. Located on the western edge of the largest natural freshwater lake in the West, this park is known for its glaciated rock outcrops and dense forests of fir, larch, and pine. Unlike more developed resorts, this location provides a peaceful atmosphere where the natural landscape takes center stage, offering visitors a chance to connect with the pristine beauty of the Flathead Valley.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of the charming community of Lakeside, MT, the park sits on a hillside that provides elevated views of the water. The surroundings are defined by steep topography and rocky shorelines that distinguish it from the flatter areas of the lake. From the shoreline, travelers can gaze across the water at the Mission and Swan Mountain ranges, which provide a dramatic backdrop for sunrises and evening photography.

Amenities & Park Features

This park is a haven for those who prefer a more rustic stay. It features primitive RV sites that can accommodate rigs up to 40 feet in length, though maneuvering requires care due to the wooded terrain. Essential amenities include vault toilets, fire rings, and seasonal potable water. A major highlight is the protected boat launch, which allows easy access for kayaking or motorized boating, alongside several miles of hiking trails that wind through the mature forest.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, the town of Lakeside offers local breweries and dining options for a quick break from camp life. The crystal-clear waters of Flathead Lake are perfect for trout fishing or paddleboarding. For those willing to drive, the park serves as a scenic base camp about an hour away from the iconic vistas of Glacier National Park, making it a strategic stop for a larger Montana road trip itinerary.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for travelers who prioritize natural solitude and a traditional camping vibe over modern luxuries. Because there are no hookups, it is best suited for self-contained RVers who enjoy dry camping and off-grid living. It is an excellent choice for photographers, hikers, and boaters who want to avoid the crowds of larger commercial parks while remaining close to the recreational opportunities of the Flathead region.

Great year round launch, easiest heavy sailboat retrieval and mast stepping ever. 3 hours/8 miles from Dayton at 3-5 kts.

Absolutely beautiful campground and park. The hiking trails were perfect, including some aggressive but short inclines, and downhill rocky paths. We were in site B15, which is right next to a trailhead. Unfortunately people walked through our campsite several times because of that. But a nice place to visit, whether you enjoy hiking, boating, fishing or other outdoor sports and adventures.

The water front and the view is amazing. The water in the lake is crystal clear, deep and so refreshing.

We drove here from Portland, Oregon, to see the lake, and we were not disappointed by the beauty. The stunning mountainous back drops, the multicolored shore line give this lake a magical feeling.

We loved our week at West Shore! A perfect park to relax and enjoy all Montana has to offer. The site was clean and quiet, all the staff were so friendly and helpful. It's close to so many things to do too! Highly recommend Glacier Perks Coffee Shop just down the road in Lakeside for all your caffeine needs too.

Pretty neat weekend here. I don’t know how Flathead Lake was never on my radar before. This park here has hiking and biking trails not far from the boat launch and campgrounds which makes for convenience. They actually rent non motorized watercraft right there too. Clean bathrooms, pet friendly, and beautiful massive trees and greenery. Great spot just south of the town of Lakeside. Grocery stores and restaurants just a few miles down the road.
