Flatiron Reservoir
Overview
Flatiron Reservoir offers a tranquil escape within the Larimer County Natural Areas system, located just west of Loveland. This 420-acre park centers around a scenic 47-acre reservoir, providing a peaceful environment for RV travelers who prioritize natural beauty over resort-style commercialism. Unlike many busy recreational hubs, this park emphasizes a quiet atmosphere where the sounds of the Colorado foothills take center stage, making it an ideal destination for those looking to disconnect.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled in the rugged foothills of Northern Colorado, the park is conveniently situated between the city of Loveland and the towering peaks of the Front Range. The reservoir serves as a critical part of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project, ensuring a constant and serene water level that reflects the surrounding landscape. Visitors are surrounded by ponderosa pines and rocky outcrops, offering a true sense of mountain seclusion while remaining only a short drive from urban conveniences and supplies.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground caters to varied needs, offering electric hookup sites for RVers who want a bit of comfort while dry camping. Facilities are purposely kept simple to maintain the park’s rustic charm, featuring well-maintained vault toilets and seasonal potable water access. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring for evening relaxation under the stars. For those traveling with larger groups or seeking a different experience, the park also features unique tipi rentals and group campsites situated near the water’s edge.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The reservoir is a prime destination for shore fishing, stocked regularly with rainbow trout for anglers of all skill levels. Because swimming and gasoline motors are prohibited, the water remains calm and glassy, perfect for non-motorized craft or simply enjoying the view. If you are looking for more active water sports like jet skiing, the much larger Carter Lake is located just a few miles south. Additionally, the park serves as a manageable basecamp for day trips into the iconic Rocky Mountain National Park.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for travelers seeking a quiet mountain retreat without the massive crowds often found at major state parks. It is perfectly suited for anglers, birdwatchers, and RVers who enjoy a minimalist, nature-focused camping experience. Because of its size and layout, it is particularly well-loved by those who appreciate scenic waterfront views and a slower pace of life, making it a hidden gem for those exploring the Loveland area in a smaller rig or van.

Been here four times. Nice looking campground, but I can only address the fishing, since I only came here to TRY and catch trout. I usually catch lots of fish (catch & release/fly fishing) if there are fish in the waters. Despite this lake supposedly being stocked by CPW just two days prior, we caught nothing and saw no signs of fish activity. Many others were shore-fishing, but none had caught anything. Pretty location but consistently disappointing for catching fish.

We love this area and the spaces they have available. From the views of the drive in, to the peacefulness of the campground and surrounding areas, it's always such a welcoming place to unplug, relax, and unwind. We appreciate seeing children and animals enjoy the area but also having space to enjoy children and pet free space if one wanted to do so. We loved watching the wildlife walk through our tent site and frolic in the fields. Such a peaceful place to visit. We will be back again.

Do not reserve site 13. It's a very strange layout. The other spaces are excellent and the campground is nice.

What a great spot. Amazing views and the sites are reasonably spread out with a bunch right on the lake. There's some kind of construction going on at the top of the dam and I can hear construction vehicles, even at night. But I assume that is a temporary thing. Cell service is spotty but I can get slow 4g with Verizon most of the time.

We had no idea this campground existed, and we are happy we stumbled on it. We camped for three nights and had a blast. The campground was small, with only 27 spots. There was a pier for fishing and picnic shelters. The bathrooms were clean, and we were close enough to town that getting ice was no problem. We hiked, fished, and enjoyed the amazing sunsets. We will be back next year for sure.

The campground is well maintained but there's not much to do here. There's no swimming, boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, etc. on the lake, so it's really only good for bird watching, fishing, and scenery. The shores are muddy and the water level fluctuates throughout the day. There's also currently construction on a nearby dam, which is interesting to watch from afar, but means it's rarely fully peaceful. There are really no hiking or biking trails from here either. We rode to the nearby Windjammer and general store (thanks only to ebikes due to the monster hill) but found them both closed on Mon & Tue. Also, TMO and VZN coverage is barely existent and channel scan didn't pickup any TV at all. Take a book, a fishing pole, or go intending to spend time exclusively with friends or family.

Overall a well kept campground, the rangers are very friendly and welcoming! Beautiful small lake, great for catching small lake trout. Several picnic shelters, a clean bathroom, an unbelievable sunset over the lake one night. This year there was a lot of broken glass on the bank making it really hard to feel safe letting kids/dogs play. Nice campground but you are not in a secluded area. The construction this year also went all night which made sleeping a challenge for a lot of adults, kids played hard enough they didn't mind. Book early if you want to camp here. Day use is available.

Beautiful place to camp. The view was spectacular! It rained most of the time we were there. So couldn't explore much. But will definitely come back in the warmer season to camp and explore.

One of the best places we stayed -- stunning beauty. We didn't have the best spot, but, that's nit-picking. This place is DROP-DEAD GORGEOUS. The giant red rock plateau... the beautiful reservoir, the baby swans... OMG. This is not a "pack 'em in" RV park. This is a hidden gem, worth the extra driving.

Nice little campground and picnic area, beautiful ride on a motorcycle or scooter (150cc or bigger) restroom, amazing scenic backdrop on the lake too.
