Fontainebleau

Overview

Fontainebleau State Park offers a unique blend of Louisiana history and natural beauty on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. This 2,800-acre park was once the site of a thriving sugar mill owned by Bernard de Marigny, and today, visitors can still see the historic brick ruins that whisper of the past. The landscape is defined by sprawling green spaces and ancient, moss-draped live oaks that provide a quintessential Gulf Coast atmosphere for every traveler looking for a peaceful retreat.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Mandeville, Louisiana, the park serves as a serene escape just a short drive across the water from New Orleans. The location is famous for its proximity to the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, which offers a dramatic entry into the region. Travelers enjoy the refreshing lake breezes and the lush, swampy woodlands that characterize this part of St. Tammany Parish, providing a perfect backdrop for outdoor photography and wildlife viewing.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features a variety of well-maintained RV sites equipped with water and electrical hookups, with select premium sites offering full sewer connections for added convenience. Guests have access to modern bathhouses, laundry facilities, and a sandy beach area that is perfect for cooling off during the humid Louisiana summers. Key features of the park include:

  • Spacious paved and gravel RV pads
  • A family-friendly splash pad for children
  • Direct access to the Tammany Trace hiking and biking trail
  • On-site dump stations and propane service

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the park boundaries, visitors can explore the charming boutiques and locally-owned eateries of Old Mandeville. A scenic drive across the bridge leads to the world-class dining and music of New Orleans, making the park an excellent base for day trips into the city. Nature enthusiasts should not miss the interpretive nature trails within the park boundaries, which wind through diverse habitats including coastal marshes and hardwood forests, offering some of the best bird-watching in the state.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for families and nature lovers who prefer a quiet, scenic environment over a commercialized RV resort. It is a fantastic choice for active seniors and cyclists wanting easy access to the regional trail system and for history buffs interested in exploring the region's complex heritage. Because of its spacious layouts and tranquil atmosphere, it is also a top pick for long-term travelers looking for a peaceful home base while exploring the unique culture of Southern Louisiana.

The State Park is not a motel. It is a very nice state park on the North end of Lake Pontchartrain. Many shaded picnic tables near the lake, a campground, and an old sugar mill to explore. I stayed at the campground, and the facilities were better than average with flush toilets and showers.

Great place to camp. Beautiful old oak trees. Wonderful view of Lake Ponchatrain. Bathroom was kept clean.

It's such a beautiful and eye-soothing place. The scenery is calm and refreshing, perfect for relaxing and enjoying nature. A nice place for picnics with friends or family. The peaceful atmosphere, wide open spaces, and stunning lake view make it an ideal place to spend quality time.

Beautiful State park on The North shore of Lake Ponchatrain. Old Sugar Plantation Hugh majestic trees nature abounds. Both improved and unimproved RV sites as well as primitive sites that are tucked away in your own little oasis. Plenty to do for the whole family.

This place is absolutely gorgeous. You can fish and swim right off your own personal dock. We had an amazing time! If you are into history, don’t miss the museum by the old sugar mill and the oak alley which is gorgeously as well. So much to do but so laid back and relaxing. We plan on starting to come here instead of Orange Beach.

It's a park and campground. Reasonably sized sites. Many are paved. Bathrooms are kept very clean so far. The showers are also kept clean, but are very small. Also not very private as curtains do not reach end to end. Area outside the shower has a partial curtain. No place to sit, but ample hooks. Campsites are relatively close to the public picnic area and beach. We'll maintained trails with educational signage. We called in a fallen tree on a path and within the hour they sent someone in with a chainsaw. Personnel at the entrance were super friendly and full of tips on how to make our stay the best it could be. Visitors center is nice. Artifacts could use additional labeling. Highly recommend. April into May camping.

No rooms/service. The campground was nice and clean. The bathouse was taken care of like clockwork. We had visits from squirrels and raccoons. The ground seems to hold water constantly, which contributes to the bugs. We had fun and the fishing area is nice!

Beautiful trip to take the kids and family out on the weekend. They have cabins with bunk beds 4 to be exact and a master bedroom a nice-sized bathroom your own parking and the view is simply amazing! I highly recommend this place.

The one star is for the beauty of the park & for the people who work there who seem very nice. Both deserve 5 stars HOWEVER how they charge for services and camping is why i say go to another park! I had to move my reservation from last wk to this wk because of a damn TORNADO WARNING! No ones fault. On top of the $25 deposit (i already paid- that i wouldnt get back if i canceled due to a TORNADO warning)i also had to pay &15 to change dates! ASININE! Then $20 more when i got there. So $60 for two nites camping in a TENT! No housekeeping or electric or bathrm- im being sarcastic- ITS A TENT SITE! $60! The $15 irks the shlt outta me. Go to another beautiful park. A shame. State rules? Maybe theyll see this in the grapevine and make changes coz it lessens the value of the great workers there and beautiful scenery.

The cabins out over the water are a beautiful place to stay, and the park connects with the Tammy Trace if you ride bikes. You do have to make your own beds, but the sheets are provided. At almost $200 a night, I was surprised by this, but it wasn't a big deal.
