Fort Frederick

Overview

Fort Frederick State Park offers a unique blend of American frontier history and outdoor recreation along the banks of the Potomac River. Established to protect the Maryland frontier during the French and Indian War, the park is home to a massive stone fort that has been meticulously restored to its 18th-century appearance. Spanning over 585 acres, the park serves as a living history museum where visitors can immerse themselves in the colonial atmosphere of the Maryland wilderness while enjoying the peace of a natural setting.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Big Pool, Maryland, the park is conveniently located just off Interstate 70, making it an accessible stop for those traveling through the Appalachian region. The landscape is defined by its proximity to the Potomac River and the adjacent C&O Canal National Historical Park. The terrain is mostly level and heavily forested, providing a secluded atmosphere. For those needing supplies or a meal out, the city of Hagerstown is only a short drive away, offering modern conveniences within reach of this historic site.

Amenities & Park Features

The camping area at Fort Frederick is categorized as primitive, which is ideal for self-contained RVs seeking a traditional outdoor experience. While there are no individual water or electric hookups at the sites, the park provides essential resources for travelers. Key features include:

  • A sanitary dump station and central water filling station for waste management.
  • A historic visitor center and museum featuring rare artifacts from three different wars.
  • A nature center, picnic areas, and a playground for family recreation.
Each campsite features a picnic table and fire ring, allowing for classic campfire evenings under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the direct access to the C&O Canal Towpath, a world-renowned route for cycling and long-distance hiking. The park also borders the Western Maryland Rail Trail, offering 26 miles of paved pathway for recreational use. On-site, travelers can enjoy fishing in the 15-acre Big Pool lake or utilizing the boat launch to explore the river. Seasonal events often include historical reenactments where park rangers and volunteers bring the stone fort to life with period-accurate demonstrations.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is best suited for history enthusiasts and travelers who prefer a rustic, boondocking-style experience in a quiet state park setting. Because of the lack of hookups, it is perfect for those in self-contained RVs looking to unplug and reconnect with nature. Awesome place to camp with just a family or with a large group. The park is vast and offers hiking, fishing, boating, and fishing along with visits to the fort and other historic building. The ranger staff here is great.

This fort has an interesting history. The displays in the Welcome Center and outbuildings are well done. The RV campground is neat and secluded and has views of the Potomac River.

One of the most well kept forts around 🇺🇸🤩🇺🇸. The grounds surrounding the fort are immaculate and the staff that work the fort are very knowledgeable of the forts history and do musket loading and firing 🔥😎👌

First stop was the Visitor Center where you can pay for your parking ticket ($3 for MD and $5 for out-of-state). Check out some of the items they have there for sale and also the small museum. If you collect passport stamps, this is where you ask for them. To get to the Fort, you can take a walk or drive over. There is the Captain Wort’s Store which has a great variety of souvenirs and food. You want to go here before and after your visit. Behind the to the right is the Blacksmiths shop. The bathroom and showers are to the left. They have these for the campers after swimming. Fort Frederick is across the street and still going strong since 1756. Take the path to the right as it will circle around to the entrance.walking inside brings you to the 2 buildings on each side. The center building is not there but there is an outline. If you get there around 10:00 am, you will see the flag raising up the pole. Make sure to say “God save the Queen”. The flag is supposed to be the only version of this flag ever flown and unique to the fort. The 2 buildings are a beautifully set up diorama of how the soldiers/occupants lived when it was active. What surprised me was that both floors were open and how detailed it was. They really explained who lived in the rooms with such detail. When coming out of the Fort you will see the CCC Museum across the way. CCC stands for Civilian Conservation Corps. It was created under the New Deal program during the Depression. They were unemployed young men that helped with improving the parks. These men lived like soldiers and were paid a stipend of $30 a month. It is a great day trip for a family to learn about our country's early history.

We had an amazing visit to Fort Frederick State Park—this place is packed with history and charm. The star attraction is the massive stone fort, originally built in the 1750s during the French and Indian War. Walking through the reconstructed barracks and along the thick walls really brings the past to life. If you're lucky, you'll catch living history interpreters in uniform, adding even more depth to the experience. We also really enjoyed the small CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) museum located near the fort. It’s a quiet but meaningful tribute to the young men who helped build and shape so many of our parks during the Great Depression. Definitely worth stopping in if you appreciate conservation history or vintage park culture. The park itself is peaceful and scenic, with picnic areas, shady trails, and river access if you want to kayak or fish. Whether you’re a history buff or just enjoy exploring unique places, Fort Frederick makes for a great stop with something for everyone. We left feeling inspired and grateful to have places like this preserved for the public.

I have only visited when my husband is participating in a colonial re-enacting event. A Colonial Market Faire is held at Fort Frederick every year on the last weekend in April. The grounds are beautiful and tours of the fort are available. It is a nice place to visit.

Nice quick historical site to visit. The employees are so knowledgeable and were willing to share even they were busy getting things ready for the opening of the season.

Interesting fort and beautifully kept grounds. Park Ranger was very knowledgeable about the local history. Small museum with some interesting displays in the visitor's center. Visitor's center is always open even if the buildings inside the fort are not. Fort gate was open for our visit but buildings were closed.

A very amazing place. The history here is palpable just walking around the fort, even before you hear any of the stories. The staff we encountered were so helpful and courteous. First, the visitor's center staff member walked us through the map, and also gave a good explanation of other pertinent information about the park. Then, staff we encountered at the fort were very personable and willingly shared interesting historical details about the site (even though tours weren't being given on that day). The displays at the visitor center are very well done. We were pleasantly surprised by the entire experience. Looking forward to going back and seeing and exploring more. Highly recommend!

What a beautiful property and the staff does an awesome job maintaining it. Visit Thursday through Sunday, all the features and exhibits are open. Don't forget the visitor center with its new exhibit display which is accessible everyday. Large paved parking lots with room for any size rig or RV. I had 3 bars of Verizon 4G LTE Roaming throughout the property.
