Franklin Lock & Dam/W.P. Franklin North COE
Overview
W.P. Franklin North Campground offers a unique camping experience on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this destination provides a serene atmosphere where travelers can watch vessels navigate the historic lock system. The park is well-regarded for its clean facilities and the rhythmic sound of water passing through the dam, creating a peaceful backdrop for any Florida road trip.
Location & Surroundings
Nestled in the quiet community of Alva, Florida, the park feels worlds away from the hustle of city life while remaining conveniently close to Southwest Florida’s coast. The surrounding landscape is characterized by lush subtropical vegetation and wide-open river views. Visitors often enjoy the sunrise over the water, which highlights the natural beauty of this inland waterway that connects the Gulf of Mexico to Lake Okeechobee.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features well-spaced sites equipped with 30/50-amp electric hookups and water connections. While there are no sewer hookups at individual sites, a centrally located dump station is easily accessible. Campers have access to laundry facilities, clean bathhouses, and a boat ramp for those eager to get on the water. The park also features a visitor center where guests can learn about the engineering and ecology of the river system.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Fishing is a primary draw here, with many anglers targeting species from the fishing pier or the riverbank. For a short day trip, Manatee Park is located nearby, offering a chance to see Florida's famous sea cows during the cooler months. The vibrant dining and shopping scenes of Fort Myers are just a short drive away, providing a perfect balance between secluded nature and urban convenience.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for boating enthusiasts and retirees looking for a calm winter sanctuary. Because the sites are paved and spacious, it is also a fantastic choice for large motorhomes and fifth wheels. Travelers who prioritize natural beauty and wildlife watching over resort-style activities will find this park to be a perfect match for their travel style.

Very well kept, friendly staff, clean facilities. We had wonderful sunset views and a gorgeous sunrise on the water. Campsite was spacious and plenty of foliage between the next unit. A great great campground for anglers and calm/quiet. Plenty of space to walk the pups for such a small island. We'll be back!

Beautiful campground! Wonderful and caring staff! We love staying here! You can fish from your campsite and they have a boat launch. The bathrooms are very clean. The campsites have a picnic table and fire pit there.

Very peaceful place to enjoy nature life. You will see alligators, rabbits, squirrels, woodpeckers, any kind of birds and fish. Sunsets are so beautiful from June to July. The place is very clean, volunteers here are doing a great job. Thank you !!

I give this RV park five stars because it’s so clean and well organized. It’s right on the water next to the locks but we never saw a boat pass through in the two days we were here. It has an active alligator culture so you need to be careful with small dogs nearby. This is not a great place to bring little kids because there was nowhere for them to play. I wouldn’t want to let them go near the water with the active alligators nearby. It was a super peaceful secure location for a couple of nights stay.

W.P. Franklin North Campground is a hidden gem on the Caloosahatchee River! The sites are super clean, leveled concrete, and most offer gorgeous waterfront views—perfect for relaxing or watching boats pass through the lock. The staff and volunteers are friendly and keep the facilities spotless, especially the bathrooms and showers. We loved kayaking and fishing right from the campground, and the sunsets are absolutely stunning. A few sites are tight for larger RVs, so check the size limits when booking. No sewer hookups, but the dump station is convenient. Just a short drive to Fort Myers for shopping or beaches. Highly recommend this peaceful spot for a quiet getaway

First trip and loved it. This campground is for those who want quiet and scenic beauty, not for those looking for pools and tiki huts. Can fish. All sites are waterfront, well designed. Very well kept. Close to Fort Myers. Staff very friendly. We will be back. Pics are out our camper door on site 4

Stayed at this campground while visiting family. A beautiful campground , but the experience was less than pleasant because of the overbearing attitude of the host (starts with A). He constantly stopped me on his golf cart rounds and insinuated multiple times that I had not locked the gate (this when there were many people that arrived later). Followed me several times and then waited by the gate in the dark when I was out walking. Drove his golf cart on to my site without invitation multiple times. This ttention was unprofessional and unwanted. Cats should not be in the campground, they stress the migratory birds, rabbits and squirrels.

Beautiful little campground with amazing views from nearly every campsite. It was mostly very quiet and peaceful. I loved that there was a little lending library. The grounds were well maintained. The bathroom was in need of a bit of attention. Some areas of it were not very clean, and the shower curtains had definitely seen better days. We couldn't use our picnic table at our site. It had an infestation of bugs/ants that swarmed anything that was set on it, and it was being hollowed out. I can deal with the bathroom issues and the picnic table, but the camp host/office person was problematic for me. My site was directly next to his. If I was visible and his dog was out, I was being barked at. Trash from the camp host's site blew into mine several times, and I had to pick it up. On my first evening there, he made sure I was aware that alcohol was not allowed (not a problem for me one way or the other), but then he proceeded to smoke weed every night. I'm a live and let live person, so if he wants to smoke whatever, but I don't smoke, and it smelled terrible. I ended up vacating my site early because it was so unpleasant camping near him and his dog.

This is our first ever reservation at an Army Corps of Engineers Campground. BEAUTIFUL and peaceful with stunning sunsets! The area is very well kept and has clean facilities . Sites are spacious and with a covered picnic table and fire grilling pit. All of the staff Volunteers are so friendly and helpful on-site, thank you! Lots of wild life around, loved the turtles! Fun to see the boat traffic going thru the locks. Really enjoying our stay, wish we discovered it years ago! 🐢
