Fremont-Winema/Sunset

Overview

Sunset Campground, nestled within the Fremont-Winema National Forest, offers a serene escape on the eastern shores of Lake of the Woods. Located near Klamath Falls, Oregon, this site provides a classic Pacific Northwest camping experience that highlights the beauty of the Southern Cascades. The park is managed by the USDA Forest Service and serves as a scenic gateway to high-country wilderness, offering a mix of shaded sites and immediate access to the refreshing mountain waterfront.

Location & Surroundings

The park sits at an elevation of approximately 5,000 feet, surrounded by a dense canopy of ponderosa pine and Douglas fir. Its location on the Cascade Range's eastern slope creates a distinct alpine atmosphere with crisp air and cool summer nights. RVers will appreciate the convenient access via Highway 140, which makes the park accessible while ensuring the campground feels deeply immersed in the natural forest environment, far from urban noise.

Amenities & Park Features

As a traditional National Forest site, Sunset focuses on a rustic experience rather than modern luxury. The campground features paved parking spurs that can accommodate various RV lengths, though travelers should note there are no hookups available. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty fire ring and picnic table to facilitate a classic camp life. Facilities include well-maintained vault toilets and seasonal potable water, while the nearby resort provides additional services like a general store and restaurant.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the lake itself, which is perfect for boating, kayaking, and fishing for trout or kokanee. Hikers can easily access trails leading into the nearby Sky Lakes Wilderness or attempt the summit of Mt. McLoughlin. Furthermore, Sunset Campground serves as an excellent base for visiting Crater Lake National Park, located roughly 45 minutes away, allowing travelers to explore the iconic caldera before returning to their quiet lakeside retreat.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for self-contained RVers who value natural beauty over digital connectivity and full utility hookups. It is a perfect fit for families looking for a traditional lakeside summer vacation or outdoor enthusiasts seeking a quiet basecamp for paddling and mountain exploration. If you prefer the sound of wind through the pines and stargazing without light pollution, Sunset is an excellent choice for your Oregon road trip.

From West Texas...Have stayed here in warm late Aug/September and now experienced in Late October 2025..I love it!! I think I prefer the Fall -October when it's cold. We missed the snow they had a few days prior to arrival and they are expecting snow on Saturday and we will miss it again. Love ♥️this place and folks- staff are awesome.... Cabins are great for us and Lake, restaurant... Everything! No complaints.!!!

Had an awesome time. The camp staff were friendly and helped us figure the parking situation out. You definitely need to prepare for mosquitoes tho. They will eat you!!

This year it's just not up to par. Restrooms have the same bugs and cobwebs everyday. Clearly NOT CLEANED as usual! I was there 4 days NEVER saw any campsite cleaned and mine had cans and trash. Table was covered in pine needles. These hosts are NOT great. Used to be pristine. Can't imagine how bad it will be as the summer continues.

It’s probably in terms of setup a four star. Reason I give it only 3 is because I was a bit disappointed by the lakeside area. The sites are away from it - most of them are and the forest is dense here. No visibility of lake or mt.McLoughlin unless you walk straight to the lake shore literally. In loop A at least also no dedicated trail or area so you have to pass the couple is sites that are there which is awkward. Due to the dense forest it’s dark early and probably colder then it would be otherwise. I love forest and trees, but this is sort of deep in the woods.

Sunset comeground at lake of the woods resort It's a beautiful campground Which is located close to the lake shore. The farthest lot is just a walk away from the the shore. Beautiful scenery lots of greenery and plenty of public restrooms.

This is a great campground with large sites, well spaced out from each other, and clean restrooms. Lake is beautiful, with massive old-growth Douglas Fir trees and cool weather up here for August. Would certainly come back here again if traveling through.

I would like to give this place a negative star if possible. Yesterday we drove through looking for a first come first serve spot. We were told there were none available. We drove through the day use area and left. We went to Odessa campground, it was free and ok but Klamath lake is full of algae. So this morning we came back to the Sunset day use area, paid our 7 bucks and parked for the day. The park host guy came and accused me of camping here overnight. I said I did not then he argued with me saying again that I did and that someone seen me here the day before. Wow. I explained that we had come through and where we had spent the night and that we came back this morning. I showed him my permit but he basically implied I was still lying and said the owners would be over to talk with me. I said good. I can’t believe how rude he was. I took plenty of pictures at Odessa and they have tie date on them if I need to prove it though I can not believe my word that he is mistaken is not enough. Crazy. The campground is nice but not worth lying over as there are plenty of other lakes around. Seems like the biggest problem here is the hosts and how they treat the campground guests. Maybe they need to be replaced. I have never been treated so disrespectfully in my 57 years of life.

Pretty lake. Very popular though so not much seclusion at the boat dock but it looked like a couple of people parked before the launch spot on the main road and had a nice private areas. We took a dip and it was cool but not freezing. Some small waves due to wind. There were a few nice trails to the north that were easy for running. There were small cabins to the south.
