Gallatin/Red Cliff

Overview

Red Cliff Campground offers a quintessential Montana experience tucked within the Custer Gallatin National Forest. Located along the banks of the scenic Gallatin River, this Forest Service site serves as a peaceful retreat for those looking to immerse themselves in nature. The park is named after the towering red limestone cliffs that provide a dramatic backdrop to the campsites. It is a primitive yet well-maintained destination that captures the rugged beauty of the Gallatin Canyon for travelers seeking a genuine mountain escape.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Gallatin Gateway, just south of the Big Sky meadow area, the campground sits at an elevation of approximately 6,200 feet. The landscape is dominated by dense evergreen forests and the rushing waters of the Gallatin River, which is famous for its world-class fly fishing and whitewater. The surrounding wilderness is home to diverse wildlife, including elk, moose, and bears, making it essential for visitors to appreciate the wild surroundings while enjoying the crisp mountain air and pine-scented breeze.

Amenities & Park Features

As a Forest Service facility, Red Cliff focuses on providing a rustic, traditional camping experience. The park features specific amenities designed for outdoor enthusiasts:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal drinking water accessible via hand pumps.
  • Individual sites featuring a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring.
  • Paved parking spurs that can accommodate RVs up to 45 feet in length.

There are no electricity, water, or sewer hookups available, making this a true boondocking destination that rewards self-sufficient travelers.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is just steps away from your RV. Anglers prize the Gallatin River for its blue-ribbon trout fishing, while rafters enjoy the nearby river stretches for an adrenaline-filled afternoon. The campground is a short drive from Big Sky Resort, which offers summer lift rides, mountain biking, and golf. Additionally, the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park is roughly 45 miles away, making this park an excellent, quieter base camp for exploring the geothermal wonders of the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RV travelers who prioritize natural beauty and outdoor access over modern resort luxuries. If you enjoy the sound of a rushing river and the independence of dry camping, you will find this location incredibly restorative. Gorgeous spot to stop and spend the night! The river is super picturesque. Agree with another review about the superb cleanliness of the bathroom also. The campground hosts were amazing. Very friendly and helpful regarding the area and Yellowstone. Would definitely stay again.

Awesome spot in the Gallatin River corridor. There are many other National Forest Service campgrounds but this was my favorite. Very clean vault toilets, impeccably groomed, half of the campsites are electric the other half primitive. Fill up with water before you get to your site it is better than any Spring water you can buy in a store. Take some with you for good memories. Tell Gwendolyn I said hello she was the best campground host ever! I have never been to a campground more organized that greeted you upon arrival and even gave your dog treats. Gwendolyn told me if you find any hidden gems in the caves or natural beauty along the paths, make sure you leave it for others to enjoy. The water is shallow but cold and the fishing is excellent!

Nice campground. Our site was near a river which somewhat mitigated the road noise. The campground host, Gwendolyn, was super helpful and accommodating.
