George Washington/Thistledew Lake

Overview

George Washington State Forest hosts the Thistledew Lake Campground, a serene retreat for those seeking the classic northern Minnesota wilderness experience. This site offers a peaceful lakeside setting away from the bustle of modern life, focusing on natural beauty rather than resort-style luxuries. It is a quintessential primitive camping destination where the sounds of loons and the scent of pine needles define the atmosphere for every visitor who appreciates the tranquility of the forest.

Location & Surroundings

Tucked away near Togo, MN, the campground is situated on the eastern shores of Thistledew Lake within the expansive George Washington State Forest. The area is characterized by dense stands of balsam, spruce, and northern hardwoods that change beautifully with the seasons. This remote location offers a true sense of isolation, making it a perfect spot for those looking to disconnect and immerse themselves in the rugged landscape and clean air of the deep Northwoods.

Amenities & Park Features

As a rustic state forest facility, the amenities here are basic but well-maintained for a comfortable stay. Travelers will find vault toilets and a hand pump for drinking water rather than modern electric or sewer hookups. Each site typically includes a heavy-duty fire ring and a picnic table for outdoor meals. The park features a sandy swimming beach and a functional boat ramp, providing easy access to the water for fishing trips and afternoon recreation.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, starting with excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, and panfish right on Thistledew Lake. The surrounding forest is a haven for multi-use trails, offering miles of exploration for hikers, mountain bikers, and OHV riders during the warmer months. For a change of scenery, the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway is nearby, offering stunning vistas and access to several other pristine glacial lakes and small northern towns.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for self-contained RVers and van lifers who prioritize solitude and nature over modern resort conveniences. It is a fantastic choice for dedicated anglers, backcountry paddlers, and families who want to experience a traditional camping trip. If you are looking for a quiet backcountry escape where the primary entertainment is the great outdoors, Thistledew Lake is a perfect fit for your Minnesota forest travels.

Very nice primitive campground. Right on the water. I enjoyed my stay.

What a beautiful campground!! The sites are well maintained with picnic tables and firepits with swing over grates. It was extremely quiet with everyone in the campground being considerate of their volume. Most of the time it felt like we were the only ones there. (It was midweek though) The vault toilets are clean and well stocked. The lake is beautiful and there are many sites on the shoreline. The only warning I would give is that there are limited sites that are appropriate for RVs or travel trailers and anything more than 25 ft would likely have a tough time coming around the loop the road takes.

Nice, clear water swimming lake and well-maintained campground. Entirely first-come, first-served. The place seems underutilized; just a few campsites were occupied on a nice-weather July Sunday evening. The campground has numerous lakefront sites. Visitors shouldn't have any issues finding a site, even on a warm summer weekend.

I've been camping here for 30 years. It's a nice clear lake with some fish. It's shallow in front of the campground and the kids can swim from most of the lake sites. Keep a clean camp or bring a dog with to deter fairly regular bear visits. It's nice that wheelers aren't allowed in the campground. We leave ours wheelers out in the parking lot. We live 10 min away and trailer over just to ride the nice trails .

We've been going here for over 10 years. Everyone, both children and adults, love it. You can pitch your tent right next to the water. Big lake. Pure water. Pine forest. We are always happy to return here.

Lovely campground/state park, lots of open area and the camping spots are nicely spaced out. And very nice host.

Nice lake, rustic campsites, boat landing. Nature walks and a horse camp a couple miles away.
