Gifford Pinchot/Tower Rock

Overview

Gifford Pinchot / Tower Rock provides a serene basecamp for travelers exploring the heart of the Washington Cascades. Situated near the base of its namesake volcanic monolith, this park offers a blend of rustic mountain charm and essential modern conveniences. It serves as a gateway to the vast Gifford Pinchot National Forest, providing a quiet retreat where the sound of the wind through the Douglas firs replaces the noise of the city. Travelers often choose this location for its peaceful atmosphere and proximity to some of the Pacific Northwest’s most iconic volcanic landscapes.

Location & Surroundings

Located just outside the town of Randle, WA, the park is nestled within a valley defined by the dramatic presence of Tower Rock. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense evergreen forests and the nearby Cispus River. It is an area rich in geological history, positioned between the southern slopes of Mount Rainier and the rugged terrain of Mount St. Helens. The park's setting offers a true sense of seclusion, making it an ideal spot for those who want to feel immersed in the wilderness while maintaining easy access to the main forest service roads.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to various RV sizes with full hookup sites that include both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. For convenience, guests have access to clean restroom facilities, showers, and on-site laundry, making it suitable for extended stays. One of the most unique features is the private fishing pond, where visitors can enjoy a relaxing afternoon of trout fishing. The sites are generally spacious, offering a mix of back-in and pull-through options designed to accommodate the needs of modern rigs while preserving a natural, woodland aesthetic.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities, as the park is a prime starting point for visiting the Windy Ridge Observatory at Mount St. Helens. Hikers can explore the trails of the Cispus River valley or visit the impressive Iron Creek Falls, which is just a short drive away. The area is also famous for berry picking and mushroom foraging during the appropriate seasons. For those interested in local history and wildlife, the Woods Creek Watchable Wildlife Area offers accessible boardwalks and educational insights into the region’s diverse ecosystem.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for nature photographers and hikers who want to be as close to the Gifford Pinchot National Forest trailheads as possible. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a classic camping experience with the added fun of an on-site fishing pond. Because of its quiet, off-the-beaten-path feel, it is best suited for adventurous RVers who prioritize scenic beauty and outdoor recreation over high-end resort luxuries. This campground was super clean and peaceful. The host was really kind to help me when my car battery died too 😅

I really loved this campground. It’s full of trees, quiet, and clean. I had such great memories from a few years ago when I first visited, so I decided to come back this year — and it was still just as beautiful. Unfortunately, my experience this time was ruined by a large group — maybe a family or a group of friends — of more than 30 people, including both adults and kids. They were loud and inconsiderate, playing music until midnight and talking and laughing loudly until 2 a.m. What made it worse was that even though there was a campground host, they didn’t do anything to stop the noise. To be fair, the host did an excellent job keeping the restrooms very clean and well-maintained. It’s just a shame that this beautiful campground experience was overshadowed by one noisy group and a lack of enforcement of quiet hours. If the host had stepped in and done their part, things could have been much better. If you're lucky enough not to have bad neighbors, I would still recommend visiting. One more thing — there were a lot of flies and mosquitoes. I got bitten more than 10 times! we visited there August 2 and 3

Host Michael kept grounds very clean and everyone in campground was very respectful of rules. Good for a quick stop if in the Giff. Only down side was the amount of gun shots that can be randomly heard throughout the day. I believe it was coming from the private property that is directly next to the camp site. Not pleasant to hear at night that's for sure.

Solid little campground. Clean vault toilets. Nice host. $25 a night. No river access. Everyone had their dogs on leads within the campsites which i really appreciated. Gun shots can be heard pretty much every morning from the private property next door.

Beautiful space: tons of huge trees, beautiful sites and friendly hosts. It is a good idea to make reservations ahead of time, although there are some first come, first serve spots. The area is pretty isolated; this is great if you just want to camp with maybe one day trip. Also, check out the cave nearby! Just don't drive too far up the mountain or you'll get stuck.
