Grand Isle

Overview

Grand Isle State Park is a premier destination located on the largest island in Lake Champlain. As the most popular park in the Vermont state system, it offers a sprawling natural landscape where travelers can escape the hustle of daily life. The park spans 226 acres and provides a classic lakeside experience defined by its scenic shoreline and lush wooded areas. It serves as an ideal base for exploring the unique culture and geography of the Champlain Islands.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in Grand Isle, VT, the park is nestled on the eastern shore of South Hero Island. The surroundings are characterized by the vast waters of Lake Champlain, offering breathtaking sunsets and views of the distant mountain ranges. The area is largely rural, featuring charming farm stands and quiet country roads that are perfect for leisurely drives. The park’s location ensures that guests are never far from the water, creating a tranquil atmosphere dominated by the sounds of nature.

Amenities & Park Features

While the park leans toward a rustic experience, it provides essential facilities for a comfortable stay. There are over 100 campsites suitable for RVs, though it is important to note there are no hookups available at individual sites. However, the park features a conveniently located dump station and clean restrooms with coin-operated hot showers. For recreation, guests can enjoy a nature center, horseshoe pits, and a boat launch that provides direct access to the lake for those bringing their own watercraft.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of activities, from fishing for lake trout to kayaking along the rocky coast. A short drive away, visitors can explore the Hyde Log Cabin, one of the oldest of its kind in the United States. For those who enjoy cycling, the Island Line Trail offers a unique path across the water. Additionally, the nearby Sand Bar State Park provides a sandy beach and shallow swimming areas that are excellent for families with young children.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an excellent choice for self-contained RVers who appreciate a natural setting over a resort-style environment. It is ideal for families looking for an active vacation centered around water sports and nature programs. If you enjoy falling asleep to the sound of waves and value a peaceful, woodsy atmosphere, Grand Isle State Park fits your travel style perfectly. It is best suited for those who prefer dry camping while still having access to well-maintained park facilities.

Very clean campground. The staff is so polite and friendly. There is a nice place to watch sunrise and moonrise by the boat launch. Also a good place to swim the dogs, or yourself! The waterfront sites have partial or no views of lake due to lots of trees ( cedars and some huge old oak). If these were cut down the erosion would be tremendous. I found the beach to be very murky, but it was windy. And I do most of my swimming in mountain rivers. I do not like paying extra for the dogs as I camp alone as opposed to a family of 6. I feel this is a bit unfair. Coin showers. One more thing. Campers are respectful of quiet hours. That's every park I've camped in Vermont.

This is a wonderful park. sites are clean and nicely separated. Restrooms and showers are well maintained. You can't beat the location. The staff were very nice as well.

The park was nice and clean. They are very strict about the quiet hours. I had brought my pontoon boat but the boat ramp would not allow me to get the boat off the trailer. That was my big complaint. Had to bring it to different ramp.

These grounds are always so we'll kept, I have been coming here for vacation since I was a little kid and I will continue coming until I have kids of my own. The lake is right off the grounds and is simply beautiful. Can't wait to see you again Grand isle!
