Overview

Grandfather Campground offers a classic Blue Ridge Mountain experience in the heart of North Carolina's High Country. Situated on a scenic property near the base of its namesake mountain, this park serves as a serene basecamp for those wanting to escape the heat and enjoy high-altitude relaxation. The atmosphere is notably family-friendly and wooded, providing a mix of traditional camping charm with the necessary conveniences for modern RVers. Whether you are looking for a quiet retreat or an active adventure, this park places you in one of the most iconic landscapes in the Eastern United States.

Location & Surroundings

Located in the community of Foscoe between Boone and Banner Elk, the campground is perfectly positioned for exploring Watauga and Avery counties. It sits just off Highway 105, making it easily accessible while still feeling tucked away within the dense forest. The surrounding area is characterized by rolling hills, rushing streams, and breathtaking views of Grandfather Mountain. This elevation provides cool summer temperatures and vibrant fall foliage, making it a year-round destination for those who appreciate the changing seasons of the Appalachian range.

Amenities & Park Features

The park caters to various rigs with spacious full hookup sites that include water, sewer, and both 30 and 50-amp electrical service. For those traveling with children or pets, the park offers ample green space and a dedicated playground. Practical needs are met with on-site laundry facilities and clean bathhouses. One of the standout features is the stocked trout pond, where guests can enjoy fishing without needing a license. The campground also features a camp store for essentials and wood-burning fire pits at sites to complete the mountain camping experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is never far away, with the entrance to Grandfather Mountain State Park only minutes from your site. Guests can cross the Mile High Swinging Bridge or explore miles of rugged hiking trails. The Blue Ridge Parkway is also a short drive away, offering scenic overlooks and easy access to Julian Price Memorial Park. For local culture, the nearby towns of Boone and Blowing Rock provide unique shopping, local breweries, and seasonal festivals. During the winter months, the park remains a popular spot for visitors heading to the slopes of nearby ski resorts.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is an ideal fit for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts who prefer a rustic, forested environment over a paved resort. We feel this is more of an rv park than a campground. Not much space or privacy between rv campsites and the highway is very close and noisy. Nice place, run well, but not a relaxing place to sit and enjoy the outdoors. The river behind our campsite (A11) at the front of the campground is nice, but the highway noise is pretty constant. Convenient location if you need a place to stay in this area.

I realize there was damage and trauma from hurricane Helene in this area but what we saw wasn’t from that. This campground is not very well maintained or clean. IThey did mow while we were there and they were doing a lot of repairs down by the creek/river, but overall the campground needed a lot of TLC. The upper area of the park (everything above the office) was run down, the roads were terrible and rough, the turns were incredibly tight in a Class A, and the rv sites needed attention and maintenance and updating. There were a lot of permanent RVs that were not kept tidy/many were overflowing and trashy. The gal in the office when we checked it was less than friendly and seemed thoroughly bothered to have a customer to interact with. It definitely isn’t someplace we would go back to.

The campground itself is lovely and pretty conveniently located. However, I experienced a number of disappointments. First, the staff at registration when I arrived were not friendly or welcoming. The bathrooms were never serviced during my stay. There was a party with loud music blaring for a couple hours around midnight that no one addressed. I expect better attention to things like unsanitary conditions and midnight revelry when paying to stay in a private campground. Otherwise, the sites and grounds were nice. I hope other people have better experiences during their time at Grandfather Campground.

Perfect spot to get to all the roads on a motorcycle. That’s where the good part ends. Rented a cabin right across from the washrooms. The cabin was swept and dirt and broom left in a corner. Mirror filthy. You have to bring your own sheets. That’s fine. But the mattress cover was so disgustingly stained. When it’s that bad, replace it. We checked in Thursday at 4:30pm. When we left Monday morning the washrooms were never touched. Not once! No toilet paper. Paper towel everywhere as the garbage was full. Shower was disgusting. We brought it up twice to the gentleman in the office as he grabbed his phone and said he was texting the maintenance guy. Nobody ever showed up.1 toilet was plugged from fecal and menstrual matter that whole weekend. They also closed early the Saturday as we went to complain again at 6 o’clock. Somebody should’ve been there till 9pm as stated on the sign. The area is beautiful but unless you have your own toilet and shower I would stay clear. Worst camping site so far for us.

Grandfather Campground was such a nice place to stay. We took our 40' motorciach in with no issues. It is a simple, quiet campground, just the way a campground in the mountains should be. We stayed on the lower level by the river. A cup of coffee by the river first thing in the morning was heaven. All of the staff we met were so nice. Considering the damage done by Helene, they've done a phenomenal job getting it opened back up. (Go look at their Facebook page) Its far enough away from the traffic of Boone but close enough to go back & explore. Our dogs enjoyed the newly reopened dog park as they were given treats & loved on by the staff. The price was just right. We hope to go back soon!

Beautiful location overall. For tent sites, I would not necessarily recommend it however. Sites do not have gravel pads, so many of them can become very muddy when it rains, which is a lot. Bathrooms and bathouses were not bad but also not really that clean when we were there. Loud highway noise near most sites in the front of the campground. I'd choose a site near the back if I were to go again. For tent camping, I will probably go to Linville Falls campground next time.

Just returned from 3 night say in site T66. My opinion Tent sites 65-67 are great for being away from the other sites, and feeling like your more in the woods, with close proximity to the creek. You're still sharing this area with the other 2 sites, with not much separating the sites, but roomy enough to have some privacy. I will say T67 does have option of setting up tent beside the creek, with a picnic table and fire pit separate from the main site, so this is probably the best site compared to the other 2. Pay close attention to the site descriptions on the website - some sites, (T69-75), seemed really close together, maybe better for car camping, but no privacy, and really small. The staff at the office were very helpful and friendly. Overall for the price, I would stay again. I needed a home base for fly fishing trips, and would stay here again, but would be picky about sites, (T65-67 & T76-78) would be probably be the only ones I would pick. Upper bathroom was clean in my opinion, easy walk to the site I was at, but uphill going back. I also found the grounds clean and family friendly. I would recommend for the price. Oh, and they sell wood bundles for $5, (good price) and ice for $4.

Great location close to alot of stuff. We camped from a Thursday-Monday. But with 3 people in one small camper we typically use the bathhouses for showers etc. The bathhouses were dirty when we arrived and were never cleaned during our whole stay. Trash cans in bathhouses overflowing, dirty showers, spiders, smelled like urine and even a random stick on the men’s urinal that stayed there the whole entire stay. Nice campground but won’t be back to do how dirty the bathhouses were… we camped by the river and even went up the hill to the other side of the campground and the bathhouses were the same way.

Things I liked about this campground were the proximity to Grandfather Mountain SP and the view of the mountain as I walked through the campground. Things I did not like were the lack of proper cleanliness (especially in the bathrooms). Our campsite had food left behind on the ground. Picking up papers on the floor in the bathrooms is not enough. The sinks need wiping down and the shower stalls definitely need some love. The tiles appeared to have mold. If you will be using the bathroom in your camper then this won’t be an issue. A NO Smoking sign should be placed in the bathrooms. There was a gentleman who constantly smoked in there (by the B sites). The floor in the laundry room was just as dirty when I left, as when I got there. The electric pedestal placement was super awkward on our site (B28). There is no gate at the entrance/exit. So, anyone can come in and out, making it feel not so secure. A good chunk of the sites are pretty close together (this may or may not bother some).

Our 1st campground in our new trailer! ⛰️🤪 Easy check in, great price, and perfect location from so much. Scenery is beautiful. Little shop has essentials, firewood, ice. Neighbors are all quiet, pet friendly, nice little dog run, very clean, etc. We are very happy with this campground.
