Great Basin/Baker Creek Campground
Overview
Baker Creek Campground offers a high-elevation, rustic camping experience within the heart of Great Basin National Park. Situated at over 7,500 feet, this seasonal destination provides a peaceful retreat under some of the darkest skies in the lower 48 states. Travelers seeking a deep connection with nature will appreciate the quiet atmosphere and the gentle sound of the nearby Baker Creek that runs through the canyon.
Location & Surroundings
Located just a few miles from the Lehman Caves Visitor Center, the campground is accessed via a well-maintained gravel road that winds through the high desert landscape. The sites are nestled among mountain mahogany and aspen trees, offering moderate shade and a sense of seclusion from other visitors. The surrounding landscape features rugged limestone cliffs and the Baker Creek drainage, providing a dramatic and picturesque backdrop for your stay.
Amenities & Park Features
As a primitive facility, the park focuses on providing a raw, natural experience for self-contained travelers. Each campsite includes standard features to facilitate a comfortable stay:
- Sturdy picnic tables and campfire rings with grills at every site.
- Accessible vault toilets located throughout the loops.
- Convenient trash collection points for guests.
There are no hookups or dump stations available on-site, so RVers should arrive prepared with full water tanks. Note that potable water is generally not available here, requiring campers to pack in their own supply for cooking and cleaning.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the park's diverse ecosystem and unique geological features. Visitors can explore the Lehman Caves on a guided tour or hike the scenic Timber Creek Trail right from the campground area. For those with a sense of adventure, the drive up to the Wheeler Peak Bristlecone Grove offers a chance to see the oldest living trees on Earth. At night, the park transforms into a premier International Dark Sky Park, offering stunning views of the stars and Milky Way.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for dry campers and small-to-mid-sized RV owners who prefer solitude and natural beauty over modern resort-style amenities. Because of the winding access road and specific site dimensions, it is best suited for those in shorter rigs or van conversions rather than large motorhomes. It is a perfect fit for dedicated stargazers, avid hikers, and travelers looking to truly disconnect from the digital world and enjoy the Great Basin wilderness.

5 stars for this campground. Extremely clean pit toilets, well spaced sites with good privacy. Cooler weather as you are at 7,500 feet elevation. Bonus is that they release new sites every day for the next day at 7:00 AM PST so its not impossible to get a spot. This is for site 5.

In a small canyon, with trees and other greenery. The sites are small, but private. Hiking trails nearby and lots of birds. I was here in mid-June when it was 100° down in Baker - but 82° up at this campground.

2025.06.04 evening, i car-camped in this Campground; its location conveniently and close to my planned activities, e.g. 2025.0604 evening hiking the Bristlecone Pine Grove, and Alpine Lakes trail. And 2025.06.04 10:00 Tour of Lehnam Caves, Though ~80% of the Campsites were occupied, the Campground was peace and quiet throughout the night. Also, the Vault toilet was clean and tidy.

Lovely campground in Great Basin. Has pit toilet and trash. No water at the time I visited (late May 2025) but it's available nearby at the visitor's center. It was peaceful and beautiful there. Be aware that it's at around 7500 feet elevation.

This is a stunning campground inside of Great Basin National Park. We had campsite number 33 for a single night. It was a great location with everything we needed. The view of the sky here was excellent if you're into stargazing. Restrooms were clean, and the park rangers were all helpful and friendly. This is a first come, first served campground that does not take reservations.

If you’re first come first served camping enthusiasts like us, you will be thrilled with Baker Creek. 4 miles up a gravel road at 8000 feet in the Great Basin is Little House living in no place you’ve ever heard of. It’s communal isolation with birds and wildflowers, sunsets and Milky Way, rushing water and whispering trees. We came for a night and stayed a week. Hiked every hike, toured every tour, ate our way through town. Bring your water and solar panels to discover small town big nature living at its best. The upper and lower Lehman campgrounds are nice, but if you don’t want to commit to dates Baker is a viable choice. There were people coming and going everyday. Not great for big rigs, but we found the most level and easy to park site for a 30 foot fifth wheel is #37. Highly recommend!

One of my favorite campgrounds at one of my favorite national parks. This campground has a large variety of sites. There are a few really great ones right on a small creek. There are a few others and a wide open area great for stargazing. The sides are pretty spread out so you’re not on top of each other too much. You have to drive down a dirt road for a little bit, which is no problem for any car

Enjoyable campground. The type of camp sites (around 36 of them) vary, some have pull through areas for RVs others have room for tents only. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit though there is a fire ban during the summer months. The ambience for each site varies as well, depending on the site you might have tall tree cover, an open view of the valley, or the sounds of the creek flowing by. We also saw deer and wild turkey roam through the campground. Water and restrooms are fairly close to each campsite and the restrooms are exceptionally well kept, some of the nicest I've seen in a campground. It's a first come, pick your spot reservation system so this does limit the options, however, early in the week there always seemed to be a handful of spots open.

Quiet, surprisingly beautiful area. No hookups, water located around campground, clean vault toilets. Terrific hikes within Great Basin NP

This spot got pretty busy for july 4th weekend. Most sites have access to the creek. But some are better then others. This site is first come first serve so plan ahead.
