Green Lakes
Overview
Green Lakes State Park offers a unique natural experience centered around two glacial meromictic lakes that possess a striking emerald hue. Located in Fayetteville, this park is more than just a place to park your rig; it is a significant geological marvel. Travelers visit from all over to witness the deep, still waters and the ancient reef-like formations known as thrombolites that line the shore, creating a truly otherworldly atmosphere for those who appreciate natural history.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Central New York, the park is nestled within a lush forest of old-growth trees just ten miles east of Syracuse. The surrounding landscape features rolling hills and well-maintained pathways that circle the water. Its proximity to the city makes it an accessible retreat for those who want a quiet evening under the stars after exploring the greater Syracuse area. The Fayetteville region provides a peaceful suburban backdrop with convenient access to local grocery stores and supplies.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground provides sites for RVs of various sizes, with many offering 30 or 50-amp electrical hookups. While individual sites lack direct water and sewer connections, a central dump station and potable water fill are readily available for all guests. On-site facilities include modern bathhouses, a Robert Trent Jones-designed golf course, and a sandy swimming beach. Visitors can also enjoy rowboat and kayak rentals to explore the crystal-clear water from a unique perspective during the summer months.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the park boundaries, the Erie Canal State Historic Park offers miles of cycling and walking paths for history buffs. A short drive leads to Chittenango Falls State Park, home to a dramatic 167-foot waterfall. For those seeking urban amenities, Syracuse features the Destiny USA mall and several fine museums. Within the park itself, hiking the scenic trails around the water is the most popular activity for visitors of all ages looking to stay active.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts who value incredible scenic beauty over luxury resort-style amenities. Families appreciate the safe swimming areas and playgrounds, while golfers enjoy the championship-level course located right on the premises. It is best for RVers who prefer a tranquil state park setting and are comfortable utilizing on-site dump stations rather than full hookups during their stay in the heart of Central New York.

Such a gorgeous state park! Even though the beach area was closed, the place was absolutely breathtaking. The green water looked stunning, and the fall colors around the shoreline made the whole scene feel magical and serene. Perfect spot for a peaceful walk and soaking in nature’s beauty. Can’t wait to return when the beach is open!

Went for a walk around the lake. Perfect weather, completely calm water, strange greenish hue to the water. Overall really awesome. The entire park seems very well kept. I can see this being a very busy place in the summer with a nice sandy beach and huge playground for kids.

Camping was a dream in our site. We had a 30 amp service with no problems. Plenty of room at our site as well. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Tent camping sites for those that tent looked very nice too. Restrooms and Shower were well kept and clean. We will return next year at the same site or another that we checked out during our stay. Also the "dump station" is easy to get to with portable water located there as well

Green Lakes was impeccably maintained, the trails were beautiful and facilities were amazing compared to many other parks i have been to. Everything seemed very new and upbeat. Excellent spot for a run, the water is so beautiful in color. There was a swimming beach that was getting "groomed" flat early in the morning. Definitely a spot to hang out with the family. Nearby kids playgrounds looked very nice and new. Plenty of activities for a family or small group

This is the most beautiful, peaceful camp ground we had stayed in a while. The lake it’s absolutely gorgeous and magical. It’s green water takes your breath away. They have a little beach area that is super fun and spacious. They have a great high jump area that is totally safe and just for jumping or diving so you get to really let go and have fun. The kayak ride it’s stunning and truly unique. Definitely a must try and it’s not expensive at all, it’s $40 per 2 hours not bad at all. The walk around the lake it’s a must too. It’s not too long and full of fun and beautiful breath taking spots to rest. We definitely recommend visiting green lakes state park. We don’t have kids but it’s kids friendly and there were lots of kids they were having so much fun. The only thing we didn’t love was that on the morning of us leaving the park staff came at 9:30 am to do the landscape and to cut the grass and the machines were very loud and took away our peace. I think they could have done that after 11 am which is check out time but other then that it’s definitely a magical place to visit with your partner or family ☀️❤️

We spent the first three days of our trip at Green Lakes State Park and had a wonderful time. The blue-green water is absolutely stunning and makes for a beautiful backdrop whether you’re walking, biking, or just relaxing by the shore. We enjoyed exploring the hiking and biking trails with our dog, and even rented kayaks to get out on the lake — such a peaceful way to take in the scenery. The campground was well-kept, and it was the perfect spot to kick off our trip. We’d definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a mix of outdoor activities and incredible views.

The park was beautiful, and very well maintained! The trails were very well kept and accessible, and the sites were nicely spaced and private. We will definitely be returning here for another camping trip in the future! This time I’ll remember to bring my golf clubs, the 18 hole course looked awesome as well!
