Greers Ferry Lake - COE/Cherokee Rec Area

Overview

Cherokee Recreation Area is a scenic destination managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the northern shores of Greers Ferry Lake. Located in Drasco, Arkansas, this park offers a serene lakeside escape where visitors can reconnect with nature. The park features a lush canopy of hardwoods and pines, providing a shaded sanctuary for those traveling by RV. Unlike busy commercial resorts, this area emphasizes the natural beauty of the Ozarks, making it a favorite for travelers who appreciate quiet evenings and scenic vistas along the water.

Location & Surroundings

Situated near Highway 25, the park sits on a sprawling peninsula reaching into the crystal-clear waters of Greers Ferry Lake. The surrounding terrain blends rugged limestone cliffs with gentle shorelines. Travelers will find themselves immersed in the scenic Ozark Mountains, where the lake surface stretches over 31,500 acres. The proximity to the small community of Drasco ensures a sense of seclusion while remaining accessible to the larger hub of Heber Springs for any necessary local supplies or dining options.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility provides well-maintained campsites featuring electric hookups and level, paved parking pads. Guests have access to essential conveniences like a central dump station, pressurized water, and clean shower facilities. For boaters, the easy-access boat ramp is a primary highlight, allowing for seamless entry into the lake for a day of exploration. Families frequently enjoy the designated swimming beach and covered picnic shelters. Most sites are well-spaced and include heavy-duty fire rings and sturdy picnic tables for an authentic outdoor experience.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water activities are the main draw here, with the lake being famous for its record-breaking walleye and bass. Just a short drive away, the Little Red River offers world-class trout fishing below the dam. Hikers can visit the nearby Sugar Loaf Mountain Nature Trail for panoramic views of the water and surrounding peaks. Additionally, the Greers Ferry Dam provides a fascinating look at the region’s history through its visitor center, while the nearby fish hatchery is a hit with families.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is a perfect match for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize natural surroundings and water access over luxury amenities. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a water-focused summer retreat and for anglers who want to be steps away from the shoreline. Because of its peaceful atmosphere, it also appeals to nature-loving travelers seeking a quiet stopover in the Arkansas wilderness. If you value wide-open spaces, star-filled nights, and direct lake access, this park fits your travel style perfectly.

Great, clean campsites. Spot setup is weird as almost all table and fire rings are on the driver side of the vehicle, but the lake access is hard to beat.

Not exactly dry camping as they provide a 30A electrical hookup. There is a dump station with a potable (drinking) water connection. We enjoyed the eclipse on April 8, 2024. The park was packed and there were even campers in overflow areas. On the 9th we were almost alone as only 2 other sites were occupied. Clear skies provide great stargazing opportunities. There is a bit of traffic to the boat ramp, but otherwise peace and quiet are the order of the day.

We love this place! He's been coming to this campground since he was young...50 years of memories packed into this place. I've had the pleasure of visiting for the past 3 years & love it. The views are breathtaking. The water is refreshing. They keep it clean, neat & tidy. We'll continue visiting for the duration of our lives. Even looking at properties in the area.

Nice recreation area, clean bathrooms. Part of the ramp was underwater. I'll definitely go back to double check it.

Not very many people in September, which is a plus. Water was still plenty warm. It was way out, there's not much there. But you can swim, launch a boat, or grill out.

Currently in GREAT need of maintenance. As the water level had been high, and Department of Engineers has not been able to meet such demand. Boat ramp, campground accessible to the public. Monitored by Park rangers, & Game wardens.
