Greers Ferry Lake - COE/John F Kennedy

Overview

John F. Kennedy Campground, often referred to as JFK Park, is a premier Army Corps of Engineers destination located just below the Greers Ferry Dam. This park is widely recognized for its scenic riverside setting and its role as a gateway to the famous Little Red River. Unlike the open sun of the lakefront, this area offers a lush, canopy-covered environment that stays remarkably cool even during the peak of an Arkansas summer. It is an ideal spot for those who appreciate a well-maintained, rustic atmosphere without sacrificing essential comforts.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Heber Springs, the park sits directly on the banks of the Little Red River, known globally for its trout fishing. The surroundings are characterized by massive limestone bluffs and a dense forest of hardwoods and pines. The proximity to the Greers Ferry Dam creates a unique microclimate where the cold water released from the depths of the lake keeps the river valley misty and refreshing. It feels like a secluded wilderness retreat while remaining just minutes from local shops and restaurants.

Amenities & Park Features

The facility features over 70 campsites, most of which offer electric and water hookups suitable for various RV sizes. Guests have access to clean, modern bathhouses with hot showers and a convenient dump station. For those bringing boats, the easy-access boat ramp provides a direct entry point into the river. Families will appreciate the on-site playground, while everyone benefits from the large, level sites that provide plenty of room for outdoor gear and relaxation under the trees.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activity here. The William Carl Garner Visitor Center and the National Fish Hatchery are within walking distance, offering educational exhibits and a glimpse into trout production. Hikers can explore the Collins Creek Trail, which leads to a beautiful cascading stream perfect for photography. Of course, the primary draw remains the river, where anglers frequently haul in record-breaking brown and rainbow trout right from the shoreline or by boat.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is a paradise for avid anglers looking for world-class fishing right at their doorstep. It is also an excellent choice for families seeking a quiet, nature-focused vacation away from the noise of traditional resorts. Because of its shaded and cool environment, it is particularly well-suited for summer travelers who want to enjoy the outdoors without the intense heat. If you prefer the sound of a rushing river and the sight of rising mist over your morning coffee, this is the place for you.

My aunt and uncle were camping here so we went for a day visit. It was beautiful. Bathrooms were clean and easy to access for my mom who uses a walker. Definitely will be back for a longer stay.

Didn't camp here this time, but plan on coming back. We got the day use pass and did some fishing. The campgrounds look great, lots of shade in those hot summer months. Even then the air off the river is like an AC. Access to the river is pretty good when its not covered up with anglers. The lady at the entrance booth is very sweet. Nice views of the river. We will be back for some camping and fishing.

Site C6 at JFK was very nice. Collins Creek runs right behind the site, so we could hear the babbling brook all weekend. Clean restrooms, easy Red River access for fishing. Each site has a large trash can. Water & electric hooks ups, dump station on site.

It's nice there. They are asking 5 dollars for day use now. You are going to this place to bring your fishing poll. It's clean, and most sites are pretty big. Part of the park dont have water. There is an electric and dump station. 2 years later, it is still the same. No new improvements, but still nice. Still nice. All sites except A have water now.

We have stayed here several times on our Arkansas travels and it’s a great quiet campground along the tail waters of Greers Ferry Lake , Little Red River , lots of great fishing opportunities when the water levels are right to catch a lot of trout . Hatchery is also within the park and a nice place to visit . Eagles are regular visitors of the river so keep a look out . Facilities are clean and sites are as to be expected from a COE facility .

Family camping trip in a 21-ft. Camper. We had a nice, relaxing time. The campground is very nice, well-kept, with several hiking trails, a playground, and good fishing. JFK is one of our favorite spots. The little red river flows right beside it. It's ice cold, but so clear and pretty.

Located next to the Little Red River at the base of the JFK Memorial Dam, this park is a place for those seeking a quiet getaway in nature! Our family stays here multiple times a year and we love it! The campsite offers clean camping areas (RV & tent friendly), very clean restroom and shower facilities, and a wonderful view of nature! I would advise getting a site closer to the river during the hot summer months because the Little Red River keeps the valley nice and cool, especially when they are generating electricity at the dam! There is an on-site hatchery available to the public where you can see various sizes of trout and learn about how they are raised from fertilization to release in the river. Great family-friendly and relaxing place to stay during the dog days of summer!

Amazing campground, stayed in the D camp area, very wooded, with lots of wildlife, very quiet. Nice paved drive, concrete picnic tables, and the showers are amazing. Trout fishing on the little red river is insanely good. Even a nice boat ramp to launch my kayak. I stayed 5 nights in a tent. With electricity, flush toilets and showers 200 feet away, far from roughing it.
