Greers Ferry Lake - COE/Sugar Loaf

Overview

Sugar Loaf Campground, managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, sits on the shores of the expansive Greers Ferry Lake in Higden, Arkansas. Known for its crystal-clear waters and rugged shoreline, this park offers a serene escape for those who value natural beauty over commercial frills. Visitors are treated to a quintessential Ozark experience where the forest meets the water, providing a tranquil environment for a classic camping trip.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated in the scenic Ozark Mountains foothills, specifically on the southwestern side of the lake. The terrain is characterized by rocky bluffs and dense timber, offering plenty of shade and wind protection. Its most iconic neighbor is the Sugar Loaf Mountain island, a unique geological feature rising from the lake. The surrounding Higden area is quiet, ensuring that the primary sounds you hear are the lapping waves and local wildlife.

Amenities & Park Features

As a COE facility, the park focuses on high-quality basics. Most sites offer electric hookups and easy access to fresh water. Key park features include:

  • A convenient launching ramp for easy boat entry.
  • Clean restrooms with flush toilets and heated showers.
  • A designated swimming area and playground for families.

The facility also provides a dump station for self-contained RVs, ensuring all the essentials are covered for a comfortable stay.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the Sugar Loaf Mountain Nature Trail, which requires a short boat ride to reach the island trailheads. Once there, hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the entire lake region. Anglers flock to these waters for world-class fishing, including hybrid bass and walleye. Just a short drive away, the Little Red River offers premier trout fishing below the dam. Local marinas provide boat rentals for those who want to explore the water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts and boaters who prefer a more rustic, nature-focused setting. It is perfect for families looking to disconnect from technology and spend their days on the water. Because many sites accommodate large rigs, it is also a favorite for long-term travelers seeking a peaceful, low-cost base while exploring the natural wonders of North Central Arkansas.

Wonderful campground! Seems to be used mostly by RV'ers, but there are also many tent only sites as well. Bathrooms and showers are clean and well maintained. Boat ramp and swimming area are great! We brought our kayak to paddle out to Sugar Loaf Mountain and couldn't get to the ramp to launch due to all the motor boats coming and going, so we unloaded and launched next to the swimming area. Easy access this way! I would definitely recommend this campground and plan to go back!

Beautiful!!! Clean, quiet campground. Nice sites, lake and beach access, marina and good times. Very scenic area, boating, kayak, swim, hiking up sugar loaf mountain! Hosts & Rangers are very nice folks. The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars is that there are no full hook up sites.

I've been going here since I was a kid. Campgrounds are well maintained and the swimming area is in great shape too.
