Greeson Lake - COE/Star Of the West
Overview
Star of the West is a tranquil US Army Corps of Engineers facility nestled along the scenic western shores of Lake Greeson. Located near Newhope, AR, this campground offers a rustic retreat for travelers seeking a deep, uninterrupted connection with the natural world. Unlike high-traffic commercial resorts, the vibe here is serene and understated, focusing on the pristine waters of the Little Missouri River and the vast reservoir. It provides a peaceful, shaded setting for those looking to trade city noise for the sounds of the forest.
Location & Surroundings
The park is positioned on the upper reaches of the 7,000-acre Lake Greeson, characterized by its dramatic rocky shorelines and the lush foliage of the Ouachita Mountain foothills. The surrounding landscape is a mix of dense hardwoods and soaring pines, providing excellent privacy for each campsite. Its location in the Southwest Arkansas region makes it a hidden gem for travelers who appreciate rugged terrain. The proximity to the river entry point ensures a diverse ecosystem with plenty of local wildlife to observe from the comfort of your rig.
Amenities & Park Features
This campground features 18 well-maintained campsites, most of which offer 30-amp electric hookups to ensure a comfortable stay. While the facility maintains a primitive charm, RVers benefit from a dedicated boat ramp that provides immediate access to the lake’s best fishing spots. A functional fish cleaning station is available for successful anglers, and each site includes a heavy-duty picnic table and fire ring. While the park uses vault toilets, the spacious site layouts and access to potable water make it a highly functional basecamp for outdoor recreation.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities, as the area is renowned for trophy bass and crappie fishing in the clear lake waters. The nearby Bear Creek Cycle Trail provides over 30 miles of rugged paths for mountain biking and hiking through the timberland. For a unique day trip, the Crater of Diamonds State Park is located within a reasonable driving distance, allowing visitors to prospect for genuine gemstones. Additionally, the nearby Daisy State Park offers more developed swimming areas and public pavilions for larger group gatherings.
Who This Park Is Best For
Star of the West is an ideal destination for self-contained RVers who prefer a quiet, back-to-basics camping experience over modern luxury amenities. It is a paradise for anglers and paddlers who want to be steps away from the water. Because of its remote feel and dark skies, it is also perfect for stargazing enthusiasts and those seeking a low-cost, high-value stay in a government-managed park. If you value tranquility and a slower pace of life, this park will perfectly suit your travel style.

I have been coming here since I was a kid, and now I am bringing my kids. It is never packed and always peaceful. There is no water or septic hookups, but there are communal water spickets around the campsites. The restrooms are primitive. Overnight stays are $8/campsite or $4/site with American membership and operate on the honesty policy.
