Gulf

Overview

Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama, offers one of the most comprehensive coastal camping experiences in the Southeast. Spanning over 6,150 acres, this massive park provides a unique blend of beachfront access and inland nature trails. Unlike many smaller private lots, this state-run facility prioritizes open space and ecological preservation, making it a premier destination for those who want to experience the raw beauty of the Gulf Coast while maintaining modern comforts.

Location & Surroundings

The park is situated perfectly between the bustling cities of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. While most of the campground sits slightly inland, it is connected to the famous white sand beaches by pedestrian bridges and shuttle services. The surrounding area is dominated by the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, a network of 28 miles of paved paths that wind through seven distinct ecosystems, including pine forests and scrub oaks, providing a peaceful escape from the nearby coastal traffic.

Amenities & Park Features

With nearly 500 sites, the park comfortably accommodates all sizes of rigs. Every site is paved and includes full hookups with 50-amp service, which is a significant advantage for a state park setting. Guests have access to a large swimming pool with a splash pad, modern bathhouses, and laundry facilities. For active travelers, the tennis and pickleball courts offer daily recreation, while the on-site nature center provides educational programs about the diverse wildlife found throughout the grounds.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Beyond the campgrounds, visitors can explore the massive Gulf State Park Pier, which extends far into the Gulf of Mexico for world-class fishing and sightseeing. Lake Shelby is located within the park boundaries, offering freshwater fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding just a short distance from the salt water. For those looking for local culture, the nearby Gulf Shores Main Public Beach and several iconic seafood restaurants are just a five-minute drive or a pleasant bike ride away.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for active families and nature enthusiasts who prefer exploring the outdoors over staying in a cramped commercial resort. Because of the extensive trail system and diverse wildlife, it is also a top choice for birdwatchers and cyclists. If you are a big-rig owner looking for spacious, level sites with full utility access in a scenic coastal setting, Gulf State Park is arguably the most versatile option in the region.

We finally made it to Gulf State Park for our anniversary trip! It's a place we've wanted to visit for years, especially since getting our e-bikes. After a few tries of finding a spot, we were so excited to book our stay. 😁 On our anniversary, we drove the scenic coast in our Jeep, stopping along the way to enjoy appetizers from Gulf Shores to Destin and back. We ended the night watching the sunset at the beach. It was a perfect way to celebrate. 🥂💖 In the remaining two days, we biked over 85 miles, exploring all the park's trails and even riding the Fort Morgan Road trail outside the park. 🚲 I can confidently say this is the best state park we've ever camped at—they truly have thought of everything. We're already planning our next trip and can't recommend it enough! 🏕️ #lanclosadventures

Only saw the huge pier but it was beautiful. Seasonal restaurant and bar on site, great owners! Fish from the pier or just site see. Bait cutting tables available along the pier as well as a fish cleaning station with a grinder to discard the trash.

Very relaxing place where you can sit by the water for hours or go for a walk or ride a bike or...whatever you want to do. There's so much to do in nature in God's creation. It's just peaceful place that every time I'm in the area I will go. My husband and I enjoy it so much.

Excellent location! Close to aqua green beaches and fantastic restaurants, shopping, and a short drive to awesome Fort Morgan, Fairhope and Foley. Beautiful trails crisscross through and around the park. Gorgeous freshwater lake for fishing, swimming or boating. Clean, spacious, well cared for RV sites with shade trees and grass. Huge gorgeous pool. The showers are okay. Better than some I've seen. Laundry room has several machines. This is a safe, gated part, with friendly and accommodating staff.

Spectacular resort state park. Many ways to stay… RV, tent, lodge (run by Hilton), cabins. Beautiful clean beach, large pool at the campground, play area for the kids and miles of hiking and bike trails. Restrooms and bath houses are super clean and modern.

Beautiful park and extremely well cared for. The staff were too notch and it is located in a very convenient location. The cabis were exceptional and the campground was amazing. Can't wait to go back and take the RV. The only bad thing we encountered wasy wife was stung over 30 times by fire ants! Their nests are everywhere around the cabins.

Beautiful park with tons to do over 20 miles of trails. Rented e-bikes for 4 hrs it was so fun! The views and well maintained trails were nice. The nature center had many coastal reptiles and very informative. Also the beach access is very clean with bathrooms, pavilion and life guards on duty. The parking is $10

Beautiful park with tons of amenities, and it's right across the street from a beautiful beach! The camper sites are generous and plenty... this place is huge! They have full hookups, a swimming pool and splash pad, electric bike rentals, ice machines, and the nicest staff... what more could you want? This is probably one of the nicest campgrounds I've ever been to if you include all the amenities and the beach across the street... I'll definitely be back!
