Gunnison/One Mile
Overview
Located deep within the scenic Taylor Canyon, Gunnison/One Mile offers a quintessential Colorado mountain experience. This United States Forest Service campground is situated alongside the rushing waters of the Taylor River, providing a serene backdrop for RVers who value natural beauty over commercial amenities. It is a peaceful destination where the sound of the river dominates the atmosphere, making it a favorite for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the great outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Almont, CO, the park is perfectly positioned between the towns of Gunnison and Crested Butte. The campground is tucked against towering granite cliffs that rise sharply from the canyon floor. The surrounding Gunnison National Forest provides a dense canopy of lodgepole pines and aspens, offering plenty of shade and a sense of privacy. The high-altitude environment ensures cool summer temperatures and crisp mountain air that travelers find incredibly refreshing.
Amenities & Park Features
As a forest service site, the focus here is on simplicity and site quality rather than luxury facilities. The park features paved parking spurs that can accommodate moderately sized RVs and trailers. While there are no electric or water hookups available, guests have access to potable drinking water via hand pumps and well-maintained vault toilets. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, and many sites include bear-resistant food lockers to ensure safety in this active wildlife corridor.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw for visitors is the Taylor River, which is world-renowned for its exceptional trout fishing and whitewater rafting opportunities. Just a short drive away, the Taylor Park Reservoir offers expansive waters for boating and dramatic views of the Collegiate Peaks. For those seeking land-based adventure, the area is a gateway to hundreds of miles of multi-use trails perfect for mountain biking and hiking. Additionally, the nearby town of Crested Butte offers charming local shops and dining options for a day trip.
Who This Park Is Best For
Gunnison/One Mile is an ideal choice for self-contained RV travelers who enjoy a rustic, boondocking-style experience without sacrificing accessibility. It is a haven for anglers who want to step out of their rig and onto the riverbank. Because it lacks hookups and Wi-Fi, it is best suited for campers who are prepared for dry camping and those who prioritize scenic views and outdoor recreation above all else. Families and solo travelers seeking a quiet, nature-focused retreat will find exactly what they are looking for here.

The 1 negative about this park is the traffic on 742! It's incredibly loud and motorcycles use it as a speedway. It's even loud inside the rv with windows closed. Everything else is amazing! The river is right across the street with multiple ways to access it. There are some gorgeous trails within 10 miles of camp. There is wildlife to see. There was plenty for us to do over 4 days. Views of the mountains and trees is so beautiful. Cell service was fine despite being in a valley. There was one tight spot coming into the park but overall not bad. We were able to get our 5th wheel in with no problems. The only reason I wouldn't stay here again was the constant road noise. It made it really unpleasant to even sit outside. It was unfortunate because everything else was perfect.

I pulled in with a flat tire to fix it and continue on my journey but needed a new tube. This family running the campground are also avid dirt bike riders. They helped in so many ways.

Nice beautiful campground located at the bottom of the Famous Dr. Park trail literally across the road. The pit bathroom was immaculate clean. The host was very nice and mostly left me alone. I was in space 22. Some of the nicer spots were on the south end, I think. 24,25,26.

Hosts were amazing. Surrounded by trees, canyon walls and nature. On the other side of the road there is a spectacular river. Excellent for hiking or rafting. No water fill. No dump stations. Closest dump station is about 30 minutes of drive north east of the campground.

We had a lovely stay! The campground host was friendly and welcoming. The bathrooms were cleaned daily and stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The fire pit set up was super cool and had a grate you could lower to your liking. The area for the tent was perfectly flat. The hookup box included 2 regular 2 prong plugs. Sure it’s close to the road, but it wasn’t very noisy. There are no bear boxes at the campsite. It’s across the street from the Taylor river which is great for fishing or hammocking.

Great campground in Almont, about 20 mins from Crested Butte, and right next to both the Taylor River and where the Doctor Park mountain biking trail ends. You can hear the river flowing from the campground. All sites have electric hookups (and most, maybe all, sites had RVs). The bathrooms were super clean for no flush toilets. No water when we were here. Will definitely stay again!

We LOVE ONE MILE!! It’s always our top pick when we think about camping! The host, Danielle and her son, Josh are so friendly, fun and helpful! Can’t wait for our next visit!!

We had a great weekend here. Quiet but also centrally located to do day trips to Gunnison Black Canyon and Crested Butte. They were upgrading their water system so we had to fill up at a nearby campground, but since we knew that ahead of time, it was no problem.

Loved our spot here. Long thin campground along the road with the river on the other side. Very friendly camp hosts and we'll maintained facilities. No water when we were there, hope that gets fixed soon.

It's a nice campground, in need of severe maintenance, no fresh water, they do have 30 amp electricity ran by a concessionaire who's doubled the prices and sell it back to the taxpayer for a profit. Roads need to be maintained, better than most in Gunnison National Forest. They sell wood for $10.00 a bundle of about 5 pieces of wood, which is on the excessive side, again a vendor.
