Hamburg
Overview
Hamburg State Park offers a unique blend of history and nature in the heart of east-central Georgia. This quiet destination is centered around a historic grist mill and a peaceful 225-acre lake. RV travelers often visit to experience the slower pace of life and explore the well-preserved museum that showcases agricultural history. The park is characterized by its tall trees and the gentle sounds of water flowing over the mill dam, making it a serene retreat for those looking to escape the hustle of city life.
Location & Surroundings
Situated near Mitchell, GA, the park is nestled within a rural landscape dominated by hardwood forests and rolling terrain. The surrounding area is primarily agricultural, providing a buffer from highway noise and urban sprawl. The park serves as a gateway to the Little Berry Creek, which feeds into the lake, creating a lush environment that supports a variety of local wildlife and migratory birds throughout the seasons. The remote setting ensures dark night skies perfect for stargazing from your campsite.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features approximately 30 campsites equipped with water and electric hookups, accommodating various RV sizes. Many sites provide a view of the water and include a picnic table and fire ring for evening gatherings. Visitors have access to a clean bathhouse with hot showers and a convenient on-site dump station. A highlight of the facility is the grist mill museum, where guests can learn about the mill's operation and purchase locally ground cornmeal when the mill is in operation.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw, with fishing for largemouth bass and bream being a favorite pastime for many visitors. The park offers boat rentals for exploring the quiet waters of Hamburg Lake, where only electric motors are permitted to maintain the tranquility. Hikers can enjoy the scenic nature trails that wind through the woods and alongside the water. Beyond the park, travelers can explore the small-town charm of nearby Mitchell or take a scenic drive through the historic backroads of Washington County.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for nature enthusiasts and history buffs who prefer a quiet, rustic atmosphere over a busy resort setting. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to fish or paddle in a safe, calm environment. RVers who appreciate historical landmarks and shaded, spacious campsites will find Hamburg State Park to be a refreshing stop. It is best suited for those looking to disconnect and enjoy the simple pleasures of the outdoors in a peaceful Georgia setting.

Beautiful, well maintained state park. We enjoyed our family camping weekend. Mr Allen was so kind and answered all of our questions to a T.

Gorgeous trails. Nice wall around the lake or through the woods. Haven't seen any gators myself, yet... This is one of my favourite quick hikes, I'll go around a couple of times because it's so peaceful and goes very quickly if you keep a good pace. If you're not afraid of the possibility of gators, kids love it and it's not too hard for most age groups.

we camped at an off time, it was during the week versus the weekend + it was hot as blue blazes. so there were plenty of spots for us to camp at. The lake was gorgeous. Our bath house were great. the people we experienced were very friendly. With it so hot, we only hiked the shorter trails. They were pleasant and we'll kept. Since this is only 1.5 hours from home, we look forward to coming back. Please plan accordingly - you are 30 minutes from the nearest anything.

Just lovely. Trails are clearly marked, need a little maintenance for kids/ families but was fine for me and my dog. It rained while I was there, which really added to the serenity. Will be purchasing an annual park pass so I can go more frequently

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Hamburg State Park. It was a mommy-daughter camping trip 🏕 with my 14 year old. I really appreciate the generosity and kindness of the camp host Ms. Carolyn, she taught us how to fish and her friend Mr. Stacy. The plot was clean and level making it a lot easier to set my tent up. We were one of the only campers with a tent, everyone else were in RVs. Nonetheless, I will definitely be back.

Fantastic camping experience, perfect for families. We were right across from the playground which was well taken can of and the kids loved it. The assistant park manager truly loves their job; the day we arrived they came to the camps to tell us about crafts and a tour that was planned for the following day. They did a fantastic job with the crafts and the tour was awesome. Much love is being put into this park by Julie and her team. We will be returning!

If you are looking for a quiet place to camp, the camping area is beautiful and well kept. If you want a quiet place to fish, camp, hike, or think about the meaning of life you will be very pleased. The Mill is a great attraction with limited opportunities to tour. Check the site or call for information on tours for the Mill which is very cool on the outside, but we didn't get to tour it. The staff we interacted with was very polite and knowledgeable about the park and surrounding area. We hope to visit again in the future.

Adventures Are Out There
What a lovely little state park. We were just traveling through, but we loved seeing the Grist Mill (Only open during events) the dam, and the lake. We did see lots of birds like a Bald Eagle, a Golden Eagle, and Cormorants. We also saw a snake near the water, eek! We did geocaching, and hiked the Blue trail .25 mile near the lake. Would love to go back and explore more, maybe next time get out and fish and cycle boat on the water, they have rentals! We have an informative travel video of this park, check out on youtube @AdventuresAreOutThere
