Hardy Lake
Overview
Hardy Lake offers a serene escape in Southern Indiana, serving as a premier destination for those who enjoy water-based recreation and quiet woodlands. As the only state reservoir not primarily intended for flood control, the water levels remain stable year-round, making it a reliable spot for boating and fishing regardless of the season. The park provides a rustic atmosphere where the focus remains on the natural beauty of the 2,178-acre property, allowing travelers to disconnect from the modern pace of life.
Location & Surroundings
Located just outside of Scottsburg, IN, the park is easily accessible via I-65, yet feels worlds away from the highway traffic. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills and dense hardwood forests that surround the shimmering 741-acre lake. RVers will appreciate the expansive limestone bluffs and the deep inlets that offer a sense of privacy and seclusion. The surrounding region is largely agricultural and forested, providing a dark-sky environment perfect for stargazing from your campsite.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features over 140 sites equipped with electrical hookups, making it comfortable for modern rigs and travel trailers. While full hookups are not available, the park provides convenient access to central water fill stations and a well-maintained dump station. Visitors often flock to the sandy swimming beach during summer months or visit the onsite raptor rehabilitation center to see rescued birds of prey. The facility also offers modern restrooms and shower houses to ensure a comfortable stay in the woods.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the water, the park boasts several miles of hiking trails ranging from easy strolls to moderate climbs through the timber. Anglers frequently target bass, bluegill, and catfish within the lake's depths. There are several interesting spots to visit nearby:
- The historic downtown Scottsburg square for local dining and shopping.
- The Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge for bird watching and photography.
- The Hardy Lake Sweep, an annual community event focused on conservation.
Who This Park Is Best For
This destination is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize a peaceful, natural setting over the high-energy amenities of a luxury resort. It is a fantastic choice for families looking to spend quality time hiking or swimming in a safe, controlled environment. Because of the quiet atmosphere and the unique raptor center, it is also highly recommended for bird watchers and nature photographers seeking to capture Indiana’s diverse wildlife without the crowds found at larger state parks.

We love Hardy lake! Not too big, not too small. Have a beach, fishing spots, camping, etc.... everyone is always friendly, and if we have boat trouble, someone is always willing to help out, or tow us in lol

Small to medium size campground near the lake that ( at the time of this review) allow 2 cars per site that give it bonus . The only negative is they have two Campground Host which are literally 5 sites away from each other, with the one next to the shower house taking up a reservable camping spot that would be suitable for a handicapped or older camper.

Great small state park in Southern Indiana. Beach was nice, has a small marina. Campground is nice and not crowded. Bathrooms are clean. Ice and bait available but no camp store. Large no wake area on lake. Lots of space for paddle boards and kayaks.

Super duper. Beach was clean. Quite at night. Friendly staff.

Great place. Swimming, boating, fishing and picnic area. Some days though boaters are way over population. Fishing is difficult then with a constant wake and hoping not to get hit by a jet ski or speed boat.

This is a beautiful lake. We went on a day that had blue-bird skies. We didn't catch a single fish, but the beauty made up for it. There were lots of pleasure boats and fishing boats. Warning, there are lots of submerged trees so take it easy where it says idle only zones. The restrooms are well kept. There is a beach area here for family fun.

Has an amazing beach for summer swimming, hiking, exploring, and cooking out! Water is pretty nice and clean and not real mucky on your feet! Got a few trails that have a great lakeside view. Private pull offs with grills to cook on. Hiking trails are easily accessible and not too rough on the feet or body. All in all Hardee lake has much more to offer, especially if you have a boat, but it's a great place for those who don't as well. Highly recommended! Great for the whole family! Two thumbs up 👍👍

We really enjoyed our time at Hardy Lake. Having a state park pass (annual membership for $50 to get into parks is well worth the investment). The lake didn't get too crowded and the weather was perfect each time we went. The restrooms were open and had soap! We kept our distance from people even in the water. The temperature was amazing. You can grill, play st the park, have a picnic (small beach looking area), build sand castles.... Had so much fun!!!!

Beautiful lake that has a lot of good views. Not a very big place when it comes hiking trails though. It does have a few trails but in total maybe 5 miles worth. But it does have a nice beach that would be fun to visit during Summer days. Seems like a great place to go fishing at.
