Hartwell Lake - COE/Milltown

Overview

Milltown Campground is a premier destination managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the expansive shores of Lake Hartwell. Known for its serene atmosphere and spacious site layouts, this park provides a smaller, more intimate camping experience than many of the larger regional facilities. Visitors are greeted by a lush landscape of mature hardwoods and pines that provide ample shade and a sense of privacy. Most sites offer a clear view of the shimmering water, making it a peaceful retreat for those who want to disconnect and enjoy the natural beauty of the Georgia outdoors in a well-maintained COE environment.

Location & Surroundings

Located in Hartwell, Georgia, the park sits along the edge of one of the largest and most popular recreation lakes in the Southeast. The surrounding area is characterized by the scenic Georgia-South Carolina border, where the lake serves as a central hub for outdoor life. The park itself is tucked away from the main thoroughfares, ensuring a quiet stay, yet it remains close enough to local conveniences. The rolling terrain and dense forest canopy create a picturesque backdrop that changes beautifully with the seasons, offering cool breezes in the summer and vibrant colors in the fall.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground offers 36 well-defined sites, many of which feature paved pads and lakeside accessibility. While there are no individual sewer hookups, the park is designed to accommodate modern RVs with practical facilities. Key amenities include:

  • Electric hookups with 30 and 50-amp service.
  • Potable water hookups at every site.
  • A convenient on-site dump station for RV travelers.
  • A multi-lane boat ramp and a courtesy dock for easy water access.
  • Clean restroom facilities with hot showers and a laundry area.

Each site is also equipped with a fire ring and a heavy-duty picnic table, encouraging guests to enjoy outdoor meals and evening campfires under the stars.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the heart of the experience here. The lake is famous for striped bass fishing and kayaking, with numerous coves waiting to be explored. Just a short drive away, the town of Hartwell offers a charming downtown area filled with local eateries, antique shops, and the Hart County Botanical Garden. For those seeking more adventure, Tugaloo State Park is nearby, offering hiking trails and additional birdwatching opportunities. The park's position makes it easy to explore the heritage of the Savannah River basin while enjoying modern lakeside comforts and scenic mountain views in the distance.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an exceptional choice for boaters and anglers who prioritize quick and easy access to the water. Its smaller footprint and quiet nature make it a favorite for retirees and couples seeking a relaxing getaway without the crowds of a commercial resort. It is also well-suited for families who enjoy traditional camping activities like swimming and biking in a safe, natural setting. If you are an RV traveler who appreciates natural beauty over luxury amenities and the simple pleasure of a lakeside sunrise, Milltown Campground will fit your travel style perfectly.

We love camping here! We have been coming here for the last year and a half. Very friendly, accommodating, clean tent camping areas, right by the lake.

My family and I visited Lake Hartwell Campground November 2nd - 5th and the weather was perfect. It would get down into the 40-50 range in the evening and 60-70 range during the day with no rain. Site 22, Loop W18 which was close to the entrance and on the water with beach. 30/50 and water hookup, which also had a dump station close by. Walking around the campground, there were a lot of great waterfront sites to be honest, but we thought ours checked off all the boxes. I also felt this campground was the perfect size… there was enough space to walk around and explore, but not too big that it felt overwhelming. VERY CLEAN. We had a pass through site, but it was pretty tight (sharp turn) with a 24’ (30’ total) pull behind travel trailer. Some seem to be much easier than others, so depending on the size of your rig… plan accordingly. Felt the campground seemed pretty safe too, due to setup and access points. Would highly recommend… pictures for reference, but don’t capture how great this place truly is!

Pleasant experience. We chose a campsite off the lake and it was quiet and not much traffic. We were near the bathhouse and got great WIFI reception. The bathrooms were cleaned every morning.

Would we return: Yes but different site. Conditions: CLEAN and very well managed grounds! Staff: no impression either way. Security: lacking. Had 2 "security" gates; 1 always open, 2nd allowed cars to follow right behind you. Site: #38, 39 & 40 no lake view, but full view & sounds of bathrooms (a/c squeaked entire time), and is where traffic passes. Spacing: Could open slides and awnings easily with space for sitting outside. Note: These 3 sites are the only ones with full sewer, 50amp services & electric. All hook-ups in good condition and easy to access. No beach despite stated. This is a review for the "Back In, 50/30 Amps, Full Hookups, KOA Patio Deluxe". Lake front sites are very inviting, clean and well maintained. Many sites tricky to access but do-able, we could not figure out how anyone could use sites #56 - 60, looks like you'd have to park on the road but no one could pass you. Wednesday PM - Fri AM 10% filled in late May.
