Great camp area! All the sites are slightly elevated over the one before, so you don't feel sandwiched in. Super nice staff! We'll FOR SURE be staying again!

This campground is out there a ways. No civilization nearby, but little to do. This campground offers few amenities, and is pretty basic. The sites are pretty close together and getting big rigs out is tight. The water is a well that then is gravity fed to the sites so water pressure is low. They will tell you to "run your water pump to boost the water pressure." Don't do it. You will ruin a pump. I don't think they are malicious, just ignorant of how RV water systems work. The views are beautiful, the folks are friendly and helpful. But the cost for the site is pretty high for no more than you get. And they have a lot of "rules" the new owners have imposed that are not on the website, not printed on their handout, and they don't tell you about in advance. Only when you violate one and one of the red shirt team shows up at your site. I would have rated this campground lower but the views are nice, the workers friendly, and it was cheaper than the other campground in Salida.

First things first. There is nearly no shade. If that is important to you, there it is. Now, Heart of the Rockies is a very nice park. Restrooms/Showers are free and clean. That is a huge plus. There is a pay laundry on site. The site was level (even though the whole park is hillside). The hookups were close, and the fire ring and picnic table were nice. Wood and ice are available on site and it is not priced at a premium (ice is high everywhere in Colorado). The staff was friendly. This was a huge plus as we originally were going to stay up the road and had reservations and confirmations but they ignored our reservation or something and Heart of the Rockies was more than accommodating at the last minute. They quite literally saved our vacation. The rude guy so many have complained about is apparently no longer there as the park is under new managment. We spoke to a very nice lady, her name escapes me, but the maintenance person was also very cordial.

The staff was great and really helpful! One of our tent stakes split and the guy in the office offered us his tape so we wouldn't have to buy any! Great service. The views are great and there's a stream you can walk down to pretty easily from T-22 or the neighboring sites. The restrooms are clean and easy to get to, plus there's wifi! Any site that's not marked as stream side has no trees. It didn't bother us but if you come in the summer it definitely heats up quickly. The sites that are not stream side are also a little more desert like with rocky dusty dirt and ours had a fire ant hill in the middle. If you're looking for more of a shaded, groomed site then you should get a stream side site. Whichever you pick, I definitely recommend camping here!

This park isn't what you might call "high end" but the management is very friendly and accommodating and the price is very reasonable. The surrounding views are beautiful, and at night it is nice and dark and quiet. Even though the park is close to the highway, traffic dies down over night. And even during the day the sounds are not intrusive. There are fire pits and picnic tables at each site. This park is the last one before Monarch Pass with 4G cell service. Or any cell service for that matter! The management is quick to respond to any problems and happy to help. We will return again. I might mention that the park is under new management and trying to make up for past bad reviews.

We stay in 100 parks a year on average, nationwide, and this one is so not worth the brain damage... and now reading reviews, we feel lucky to have not had more to deal with. There's another park (Spur) just up the road (west) that is wonderful, and the owners are kind. After an unfortunate alteration in plan thanks to a mudslide, we pulled in here late one evening, knowing in advance via their website that they had vacancy. We stopped at the office for after hour info, and instead of a set of instructions as is customary, a gentleman met us and informed us we should be grateful he'd gotten himself out of bed to give us a site. Having made a reservation for this park for later this summer, we felt it might be a good last minute option, given our circumstances. However, after the curt and unprofessional exchange with the office attendant, we departed and continued on to a different destination for the evening. A few days later, with the bad taste lingering, I canceled our reservation for this summer, mentioning our experience as the reason. I also requested their consideration in waiving their $10 reservation/cancellation fee (reservation and transaction was held entirely online by their system). I was declined, and in a manner not much different than what I experienced in person. We were treated like we were an annoyance, and that we should be most astoundingly grateful for the person's audience the night we tried to pay $35/night for a place to stay. In the company's response to our cancellation and request, we have been left with the impression that the customer is always to blame for any unpleasant or unprofessional experience had, and reminded that the campground is private property (in capital letters for emphasis). So not worth it.
