High Falls

Overview

High Falls State Park is a premier outdoor destination in middle Georgia, centered around the powerful cascades of the Towaliga River. Once a bustling industrial town in the 1800s, it has evolved into a serene escape for travelers seeking natural beauty and historical intrigue. The park provides a rustic yet comfortable environment where the sound of rushing water serves as a constant backdrop for your stay. Visitors can explore the remnants of a historic grist mill and enjoy the park's lush, wooded landscape while camping in one of Georgia's most scenic settings.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just off Interstate 75 in Jackson, GA, the park offers an accessible retreat between Atlanta and Macon. The surrounding area is characterized by the Towaliga River and the 650-acre High Falls Lake. The landscape features rolling hills and dense forests, providing a tranquil buffer from the nearby highway. Its proximity to the interstate makes it a convenient stop for cross-country travelers, while the deep woods and river views make it feel miles away from the hustle of modern civilization.

Amenities & Park Features

The RV camping area is designed to accommodate various rig sizes with sites offering water and electrical hookups. Guests have access to modern bathhouses with hot showers, a laundry facility, and a central dump station. For recreation, the park features a seasonal swimming pool, a miniature golf course, and multiple playgrounds for children. Those traveling with friends who do not own an RV can also find yurts nearby, ensuring a variety of ways to experience the park’s natural setting together.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Anglers flock to this location for the high-quality bass fishing found in High Falls Lake, which is widely considered one of the best spots in the state for hybrid and white bass. Hikers can enjoy several miles of trails that offer various vantage points of the waterfalls and the riverbanks. Just a short drive away, visitors can explore the Dauset Trails Nature Center or visit Indian Springs State Park, one of the oldest state parks in the nation, to sample its famous mineral water.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature photographers and families looking for an active outdoor getaway. It appeals to those who prefer a state park atmosphere over a commercial resort, favoring quiet nights and shaded sites. It is a fantastic choice for history buffs interested in Georgia’s industrial past and for boaters who want easy access to calm waters for an afternoon of paddling or fishing in a protected natural environment.

High Falls State Park easily earned its 5-star rating during our recent autumn visit—it truly did not disappoint. This park is a fantastic destination, offering great scenery, spacious camping, and surprising opportunities for fun. The natural landscape here is stunning, anchored by a superb network of hiking paths. The trails are excellent, following the rushing river and climbing the surrounding hills, which makes for both peaceful nature walks and satisfying exercise. The absolute highlight of our stop was the unexpected fun provided by the park. During our visit, they hosted a fall scavenger hunt. While it seemed designed for younger visitors, we jumped in anyway and had an absolute blast! It was a brilliant, interactive way to explore the park and was the most memorable part of our entire trip. The campground itself is nice and wonderfully spacious. We noted that it is separated from the main park attractions, located just across the street. While the split is a little strange at first, it's very easy to navigate and ensures the camping area remains peaceful. High Falls is a must-visit for anyone looking for beautiful trails, clean facilities, and maybe even a fun little adventure!

We loved it. We took our 4 kids, ages 6-11, and they had no trouble keeping up on the trails. The views of the falls were beautiful! The office staff were friendly and helpful, and the office restrooms were clean and well cared for. Great place for a picnic, hike, or just to sit and enjoy the sound of the falls.

I've been coming here camping since I was a child. So 40 years of this amazing place. It's beautiful, serene and the most perfect place to camp with family or friends!

High Falls State Park is truly stunning! The natural beauty here is breathtaking—from the rushing falls to the peaceful walking trails, it’s the perfect place to relax, explore, and take in the scenery. We didn’t camp or rent any equipment, so I can’t speak to those amenities, but just visiting the park itself was well worth the trip. One tip for visitors: the “souvenir” store across the street is actually two small buildings that mostly sell vape products, cigarettes, alcohol, and have gambling machines. It smells strongly of cigarettes and really isn’t a souvenir shop, so I’d recommend skipping it and enjoying the park instead. Overall, the park itself is beautiful, clean, and absolutely worth a visit!

First time here and stayed 3 nights at site 18. Hiked the trails and Tranquility & Falls trails are not for the faint of heart! Beautiful foliage and places to stop along the way. Dog friendly. Lots of campers had dogs. Very clean and well maintained with several bathrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. Some of the camp sites are rather close to each other, so if that’s a negative for you, be sure to pay attention to that when booking. Nice playground for kiddos and several open areas for kids to run around. Many brought bikes. Close to several towns for restaurants. Dollar General right outside the campground. Cute little store in the park has some basics. Campground has a gate with a gate code. Only negative— internet is non existent and no sewer hookups at the site.

This place has spectacular views and well marked trails. You can also bring your own kayak, rent one or rent a paddle boat. The kayak launch is super easy to maneuver! Can't wait to come back!

Huge park and very well maintained. It was busy the day I went which was a Sunday. $5 to park I thought was very reasonable. Falls are not the most spectacular in Georgia but worth the trip. Hiking trails are awesome but steep in places.

If you head to the Fall's View trail, be prepared for climbing. You should also be up to avoiding tripping hazards, as the trails are full of them. If you are up to the moderate hike, you will be rewarded with beautiful vistas. You will also likely see some seasonal fauna, which makes this fun to revisit. The rushing water and big rocks are the stars of this trail, which are most dramatic on the lower half of the loop. If you aren't ready to commit to the full loop, start with the lower path along the river. If you want to do the entire red loop, I recommend beginning with the upper half of the trail, which heads away from the water. It is sunnier and drier, then drops down to bring you back along the shadier riverside. Whether you hike this fast or meander slowly along the well marked path so you can stop to enjoy the many cool sights there are to see along the way, this trail is a winner. I simply caution that you prepare for some significant up and down climbing over boulders and such, if you plan to visit this part of the park

Visited on 2/22/25. We had a wonderful visit. We just came in for the day to hike the Falls Trail. I’ve been to a lot of the state parks in Georgia, and this is one of the best. It has beautiful waterfall views and a great hike. I would definitely visit here again!

DATE: New Year's Day 2025 This was such an Amazing experience! Hiking Tranquility Trail with a group of 50 women embracing nature was definitely Tranquil. The trail wasn't very difficult. Good for a new hiker, and the support of the group made it that much easier. The waterfalls were calming, peacefull and soothing to my spirit. What a great way to refresh & begin a new year! Wonderful area to explore.
