Highline Lake

Overview

Highline Lake State Park serves as a lush, green oasis in the high desert of Western Colorado. Located in Loma, this park is a premier destination for water enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers seeking a basecamp near Fruita. The park features two distinct lakes, Highline and Mack, and a well-maintained campground that offers a stark contrast to the surrounding arid landscape. It is widely regarded as a focal point for recreation in the Grand Valley, serving as a social hub for the local community and travelers alike.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just northwest of Fruita, the park is easily accessible via Interstate 70. The landscape is characterized by verdant lawns and shaded groves of cottonwood trees that provide relief from the high Colorado sun. Beyond the park boundaries, the terrain quickly transitions into the rugged mesas and desert canyons of the North Fruita Desert. This strategic location makes it an ideal spot for travelers who want to experience aquatic recreation and high-desert exploration within a single stay.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground at Highline Lake is designed for comfort, offering sites that accommodate both tents and RVs. Most sites are equipped with reliable electric hookups to power your stay. The facility includes modern comforts to ensure a pleasant visit:

  • Guests have access to coin-operated showers and well-maintained flush toilets throughout the year.
  • An easily accessible dump station and potable water are provided specifically for RV travelers.
  • The park features a popular swim beach and a visitor center with educational displays about the local ecology.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Adventure is just minutes away from the park gates. Cyclists flock here for easy access to world-class terrain and natural wonders that define the region.

  • Visitors can ride the famous North Fruita Desert 18 Road trails located just a short distance from the campground.
  • Birders can explore the Audubon Society Important Bird Area to spot various migratory species near the water.
  • Hiking enthusiasts can visit the red rock canyons and scenic drives of the nearby Colorado National Monument.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is a perfect match for active families and outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy a mix of land and water activities. Because of its proximity to renowned cycling paths, it is a top choice for mountain bike travelers looking for a campground with better amenities and shade than primitive desert spots. It is also ideal for those seeking a peaceful, organized retreat where they can paddleboard in the morning and explore rugged canyon landscapes during the heat of the afternoon.

Great place to camp if you're looking to explore Colorado National Monument. November is an excellent month to visit this park.

I frequently visit Highline Lake State Park going and coming to Grand Junction. The Mountain Bike trails are fun, peaceful and uncrowded, and I can ride my eMTB.

This state park is nice for its big shade trees and the water nearby. The sites have plenty of space and it was very quiet and not many people there. It was crazy hot, felt muggy then adding the insane amount of mosquitoes is why I gave it a low review. A few of the sites were flooded and however they are watering is making it a haven for the blood suckers. We have a 42ft 5th wheel we stayed in site 15 and is so plenty big and then some for our trailer and truck.

The mosquitoes are vicious, due to their interesting watering cycle and methods they are breeding aggressive mosquitoes and I guess they're not treating the mosquitoes because it is worse than anywhere in all Grand Junction and the mesa. And super noisy. The other campers, One of the camp host was running their grinder at 7:00 a.m. if not sooner. No privacy.

Highline State Park it’s incredible in the springtime with beautiful green campsites and plenty of shade. The reservoir is wonderful to ride bikes around and highly recommended to come for the 18 hours of Fruita race.

It was great. Was there for the 18-hour of Fruita bike ride. I didn't ride, but I did enjoy walking my dog.

Peaceful, Serene, gorgeous sunset, glorious sunrise. Wonderful Campground hosts. You won't be disappointed. Noticed this nest in the tree above campsite 20, whether it's birds or insects with stingers I'm not sure but I'm leaning toward stingers. You decide.

Even though we are in our winter season here in Colorado. Highline Lake State Park is a lovely place. I hope to come and visit in the Summer time when everything is in full bloom. However it has been a lovely drive through the local farming community to arrive at Highline Lake State Park.

Don't know why this isn't rated higher! I liked the lake walk which was about 3.5 miles. There were many shaded picnic tables and beautiful views. Few folks to disturb your peace. Mesa Lake is gorgeous! Perfect spot for a walk and picnic. And the ladies at the ranger office were lovely and super helpful.
