Hither Hills
Overview
Hither Hills State Park offers a unique opportunity for travelers to experience the raw beauty of the Atlantic coastline. Located on the eastern tip of Long Island, this destination is widely considered one of the premier beachfront camping spots in the Northeast. The park provides a rugged yet organized environment where RVers can park just steps away from the sand, making it a high-demand location for those who appreciate the sound of crashing waves and fresh salt air.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the Napeague strip between Amagansett and Montauk, the park is surrounded by a diverse landscape of maritime forests and coastal dunes. To the south lies the vast Atlantic Ocean, while the north side of the peninsula offers views toward the bay. The environment is defined by its rolling sand hills and the famous Walking Dunes, which provide a fascinating geological backdrop for any camping trip in this coastal corridor.
Amenities & Park Features
This park is designed for a rustic experience that focuses on the natural environment. While it does not offer individual hookups, it provides several essential facilities for comfortable camping:
- Centrally located dump stations and water filling stations for RVs.
- Clean bathhouses featuring hot showers and modern restroom facilities.
- A well-stocked camp store offering ice, firewood, and basic supplies.
- Dedicated picnic areas with wood-burning grills and tables.
The campground features 190 sites, many of which accommodate RVs and trailers. Because the sites are located directly behind the dunes, the layout fosters a community-focused atmosphere among travelers.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Beyond the beach, the area is rich with historical and recreational sites. A short drive away is the Montauk Point Lighthouse, commissioned by George Washington and offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic. Nature enthusiasts can explore the Walking Dunes trail, which showcases unique flora and shifting sands. For those interested in local culture, the village of Montauk provides world-class seafood dining and a vibrant harbor atmosphere perfect for evening strolls.
Who This Park Is Best For
Hither Hills is the ideal destination for self-contained RVers who value location and scenery over luxury resort amenities. It is a favorite for families looking for a traditional summer beach vacation and surf fishing enthusiasts who want immediate access to the water. If you enjoy a social, community-focused atmosphere and don't mind dry camping to secure a spot on the oceanfront, this park is a perfect fit for your travel style.

It is an excellent place, whether you go camping or just for the day. It has showers, bathrooms, mirrors, water to rinse off the sand, and food for sale. If you camp, you can spend several lovely days there, and in the evenings they show a movie for the children. Kids can ride their bikes freely. In the summer of 2025, we were camping and went to the beach early in the morning. On the way, a very important doll for my son got lost, and we didn’t realize it until 4 hours later. It was a small family chaos. The next day I went to the office and there it was! Someone kind had returned it, and Mrs. Genne gave it back to us. She is a very kind lady who also speaks Spanish. We asked her a few questions and she talked with us for a long time. It is an excellent place with excellent people.

Hither Hills is truly a one-of-a-kind destination... a campground that feels almost magical. The entire property is kept spotless, from the campsites themselves to the on-site facilities. You’ll find everything you need for an unforgettable stay: convenient snack bars, and on-site geberal store, fun rental booths, great playgrounds for the kids, and of course, the stunning beach just steps away. It’s the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. An absolutely fantastic place for families to make memories. Highly recommended.

Easily our favorite beach in the Hamptons. $10/day parking, super clean bathrooms, snack bar, lifeguards after Labor Day.

Love the place, not the over burdensome rules for families camping with different members back and forth with different cars

Beautiful beach with great facilities. The restrooms and showers were clean and well-maintained, which was a big plus. It’s a quiet, peaceful spot, perfect for families looking to relax and enjoy the day. $10 parking fee

Hither Hills is a favorite of ours. It is quiet and peaceful when we go in April. The beach is beautiful but eroded from last year. The bathrooms and showers are a plus. The town has an IGA where you can pick up groceries. White's drug store has whatever else you may need plus a gift shop. There are numerous restaurants to choose from. At times, the sound of the waves at night is so soothing it lulls me to sleep. There is a nice picnic area with tables and barbecues and a great playground.

Hither hills campground. I have to say one of the best bathrooms I've ever seen at a campground. They also have family bathrooms and super large showers 😜.No pull string water control is the best. There's a nice size playground for the kids or big adults. All the sites are back in. There is no privacy between sites and every site is completely open.Everyone is very friendly. They actually have a general store that sells beer. They sell wood at the main office $7 a bundle. It was worth it . On the back side of the main office building they have air fill up the station. If you're coming back from wheeling this is nice. From where we camped we were literally on the other side of the dune to the beach. There are no hookups so you have to be self-contained. There are water spickets around the campgrounds. So if you do pick a site that is close to one of these water stations you might get some extra foot traffic near your site. Something to think about when choosing a spot. We really had a great time and you're only 10 minutes away from town which was also very nice. We will definitely be returning.
