Horseneck Beach State Reservation
Overview
Horseneck Beach State Reservation stands as one of the most popular coastal destinations in the Massachusetts state park system. Spreading across 600 acres of barrier beach and salt marsh, the park offers an immersive South Coast experience. RVers come here to enjoy the sound of crashing waves and the refreshing breeze of Buzzards Bay. The atmosphere is decidedly natural and rugged, emphasizing raw coastal beauty over commercial developments.
Location & Surroundings
Located at the western end of Buzzards Bay in Westport, MA, the reservation is uniquely positioned at the edge of the Atlantic. The landscape is defined by two miles of sandy shoreline and extensive salt marshes that provide a habitat for diverse bird species. The surrounding area of Westport is a mix of agricultural land and coastal charm, offering a quieter alternative to the bustling Cape Cod crowds.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features 100 campsites with paved pads for various RV lengths. While this is a dry camping destination without individual hookups, the park offers essential facilities including:
- A central dumping station and water fill-up.
- Seasonal restrooms with hot showers.
- Direct beach access from the camping loops.
Each site has a picnic table and grill, though the salt spray limits natural shade.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw at Horseneck Beach. Visitors can explore Gooseberry Island, a rocky landmass connected by a causeway that is perfect for bird watching. A paved bike path runs along the beach, offering a scenic route for cycling or walking. For local flavor, the nearby Westport Rivers Vineyard provides a relaxing afternoon excursion just a short drive from the reservation gates.
Who This Park Is Best For
This reservation is ideal for self-contained RVers who appreciate a rustic experience right on the coast. It is a haven for beach enthusiasts and bird watchers who enjoy frequent ocean winds. If you prefer the sound of the surf over a generator and seek a scenic coastal escape without resort-style amenities, Horseneck Beach is a perfect fit for your travel style.

Love it here!! First time camping at Horseneck Beach campground and it was nothing short of being amazing. The place is clean, though sites are close by, it is not intrusive. Electric hook-up and potable water/dump station available. The ocean right there, Gooseberry Island a short walk away, what more can you ask for!! The staff at the park/campground are amazing, friendly and accommodating. Will make this a regular stop on our travels. @kaleb-and-lucas-adventures

My wife and I spent 5 days camping at the Horseneck Beach campgrounds. Our site was right along on the beach in a non-electrical site. The weather was very nice in mid September. We walked along part of the beach, down the paved path to the much bigger beach area and walked the longer trail on Gooseberry Island. The walk to the beach area was and the trail around the island were both about 3 miles each.

Great beach. Water is cold but to be expected. Cleaner than the last time I was here. Parts of the beach was closed due to nesting of animals Love they have a path to walk or bike.

Having been going here all my life. Great sands, dunes, and a place where you can find that peaceful experience you always want at the beach. Down the street there is also gooseberry island. It's very quiet and has minimal parking. One on side you find calm waters, the other offers waves and choppy waters. Only downside are the rocks!

I've been going to Horseneck for years and never get tired of camping there. Great location for sunsets and the Horseneck staff are amazing. A long stretch of beach allows you to have a pleasant walk at low tide. It can be quite Rocky in many areas though. Fortunately there is also a paved path for cycling 🚲 or walking 🚶♂️ 🚶♀️. One of my most favorite places on the East coast

My off-season visit to Horseneck Beach was a blast. No crowds, wild and rough surf, and the very reasonable warning not to mess with the dunes. Walked the beach and encountered locals with their well-trained dogs. The place was spotless, no trash and no broken glass. From the beach I found great places for breakfast, lunch, and dinner north on Route 88 about 15 minutes away. For those seeking potential snow on the beach (thank you, Taylor), this would be perfect.

Stayed for a few weeks in the late summer/fall right by water. Low key. Not busy during week and quiet. Weekends a little more busy but not like summer. If you can take the slightly cooler weather it will be a good experience.

This summer I have been here at least 2 times a week . It is $15.00 for massachusetts residents and I believe $ 30 for anyone out of state . You can't pay with cash !! There a few machines scattered throughout the parking lot to get your parking stub . Ok now about the beach you can rinse off before or after in the showers they do work . This beach has every type of person on it , you will see some of the most beautiful people in your life here . The beach is amazing ..big time bring shoes you don't care about save your feet from the rocks !! There are a lot of rocks. The waves are great . Very friendly lifeguards on duty they do a great job . You can bring body boards , surfboards , no inflatable stuff . You won't even make it to the water lol. I see it all the time. Again don't do the ( rock walk ) save your feet and bring something anything for your feet trust me you will thank me . Very nice people at this beach . Great views . One of my favorite beaches in the world it's very under rated I give it a perfect 10 .

It's always a 5 star for me! But the beach is extremely rocky so wear good shoes if you're walking on the beach. As the shoreline is every changing you never know what to expect! Lucky for us that live here to have such a beautiful unspoiled spot!
