Horsethief Reservoir

Overview

Horsethief Reservoir is a premier outdoor destination in Western Kansas, offering a unique blend of modern convenience and rugged prairie beauty. Spanning over 450 surface acres of water surrounded by rolling hills, this park serves as a vital community recreation area where RVers can enjoy a peaceful retreat. Unlike simple roadside stops, this reservoir is a destination in its own right, inviting travelers to unhook and stay for a while to appreciate the scenic High Plains landscape and the vibrant local ecosystem.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just eight miles west of Jetmore, KS, along Highway 156, the park is nestled within the sweeping Pawnee Valley. The surrounding terrain is characterized by native grasses and dramatic geological formations that contrast with the deep blue waters of the reservoir. This location provides a true sense of seclusion, offering visitors a starlit night sky that is rarely found near urban centers, making it a favorite for those seeking peace and quiet and a connection to nature.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is well-equipped for modern RV travel, providing numerous sites with electric and water hookups that accommodate a variety of rig sizes. Visitors have access to clean, modern shower houses and a convenient dump station. For recreation, the park boasts a professional disc golf course, dedicated archery ranges, and a large playground for families. The expansive pavilion and well-maintained boat ramps ensure that land and water activities are equally accessible to all guests throughout the season.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water-based recreation is the heart of the experience, with ample opportunities for boating, kayaking, and fishing for species like walleye, largemouth bass, and catfish. On land, the park features an extensive network of trails perfect for hiking and mountain biking while observing local wildlife. For a cultural day trip, travelers can visit nearby Dodge City to explore the Boot Hill Museum and immerse themselves in authentic Old West history just a short drive from the reservoir.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for active families and outdoor enthusiasts who prioritize recreation and natural beauty over resort-style commercialism. Its spacious layout and quiet atmosphere also make it a top choice for nature photographers and birdwatchers looking to capture the essence of the Kansas prairie. Whether you are traveling in a large motorhome or a nimble camper van, this reservoir offers a refreshing escape for those who love the great outdoors.

A nice little hidden gem! They've done a great job building up the amenities, the new lodge looks awesome. Good swimming beach for the kids and a fun disc golf course. It's a clean, well-kept park and the staff is really friendly. Perfect place for a quiet sunset on the water.

Wasn't what me and my family expected. The "cabin" we got was a tiny home and not how it was described online. The porch was full of spider webs. The cabin wasn't the cleanest. We couldnt find a after hrs phone number.

Beautiful for a camping getaway! The flat slabs were large and clean. The dump site was very efficiently built. The area was clean even the grass although people brought their pets and hopefully cleaned behind them. The store was great. The docks were clean & sturdy. Erin was very helpful. Definitely returning again. Only con, the wind was annoying. It blew strong and shook the camper

Gorgeous camp, well kept grounds. Spacious lots. Bathrooms in great shape. Kind and helpful staff. Already booked for the next trip. Quickly became a favorite spot.

One of the best campgrounds I've ever visited in this country. The fish are biting and they have a self service kayak kiosk. Top notch glamping, utility & RV campsites and the most beautiful landscape I've seen in western KS

Nice spread out campground. The sunsets on the lake here were picturesque. Seemed to be a well maintained park during my visit. They also have a small grocery store onsite. We’ll be back!

My family and I have camped here numerous time with my sister who lives down the road in Garden City. Very nice place to spend a few nights with the kids. The reservoir itself is big enough to take the boat out for a spin and do some fishing. Kids enjoy the smaller area to play around at!

Pros: cute, nice view, family friendly, allow late/self check in, allow dogs Cons: cater mostly to RVs, not very clean facilities, loud guests and RVs, unleashed dogs, rules not enforced, do not enforce leash regulations for dogs Cute family friendly spot with a lot a space for tent and RV camping. Many bugs so be prepared. Little sun protection or trees as well. Restrooms are available but scarce and placed very distant from the “primitive” tent camping area, which is strange considering the rest of the camp area is for RVs with their own bathrooms. Bathrooms are also not very clean, but it appears they have people spray them with some kind of chemical each morning. Three stars because of how poorly enforced “quiet” hours are (people were up screaming until 3am) and because they seem to allow RVs to park anywhere they please for camping. As a tent camper I was not allowed to take many sites because they were RV-only — I had to drive far down to the end near the yurts, which was more peaceful and less light-polluted at night anyway. However, I woke up the next morning to find my little tent surrounded by loud RVs even though I was in the designated tent “primitive” area. Staff did not respond when I called about this. Very disappointing.

I bought a day pass to check out the hiking trails. They are mainly maintenance roads, along with some cattle and deer trails. There is a lot of potential here, but keep your expectations low for hiking or trail running. The views are great. It is a very nice place in western KS.
