Hueston Woods

Overview

Hueston Woods State Park offers a premier outdoor experience centered around the scenic Acton Lake in southwest Ohio. Spanning nearly 3,000 acres, this state park successfully balances a resort-style atmosphere with the rugged, preserved beauty of a National Natural Landmark. It serves as a flagship destination for RVers who seek a mix of woodland serenity, modern recreational facilities, and well-maintained camping infrastructure.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in College Corner near the Indiana border, the park is defined by its ancient beech-maple forest, which provides a lush, green canopy during the summer months. The landscape transitions seamlessly from dense timberland to the shimmering 625-acre waters of Acton Lake. While the park feels secluded, it is conveniently located near Oxford, providing easy access to the unique culture and amenities surrounding Miami University.

Amenities & Park Features

The campground is well-equipped for modern travelers, offering a variety of full-hookup RV sites alongside electric-only options. Guests have access to essential facilities including heated shower houses, a dump station, and a camp store. Beyond the campsites, the park features a championship golf course, a disc golf course, and a large swimming beach, ensuring that there is never a shortage of on-site entertainment.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 12 miles of hiking trails or rent a boat to spend the day fishing for bass and bluegill. The Nature Center is a must-visit, featuring a raptor rehabilitation program and local wildlife exhibits that appeal to all ages. For those interested in local history, the Doty Homestead offers an insightful look at 19th-century pioneer life within the park boundaries.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is ideal for active families and nature lovers who appreciate a structured park environment with diverse activities. Because the campground offers big-rig friendly sites and plenty of paved surfaces, it is an excellent choice for motorhome travelers who want the comforts of a resort paired with the tranquility of a deep-woods retreat.

We really enjoyed our stay here. We rented a 2 bedroom cabin. Very comfortable and clean. The lodge is beautiful with a stunning view of the lake. The cabin was missing a couple of things; no paper towels, very few drinking glasses and cooking utensils. If you rent a cabin, I recommend bringing your own utensils and pots & pans. Overall a great experience.

I really enjoyed it! Nice swimming area overlooking boats going by in the distance. Clean environment. I enjoyed it way more than the other lakes we've gone to in the past. Will definitely be going back

We stayed here twice when we were on vacation in Ohio. Very nice Cabins and surroundings. They have pools, volleyball court, a basketball court, and other amenities. They also have a nice beach and great customer service

The park has a variety of options for your stay including RV, tent, lodge, cabin, equestrian, primitive and groups. There is a large Pavillion in the campground. They provide many activities such as nature walks, flora and fauna talks, and more. Acton Lake offers a beach, marina, and fishing. You can rent boats as well. There are 18 hiking trails of various lengths and difficulty.

Hueston Woods State Park is one of the most beautiful state parks in Ohio. The park is undergoing some renovations (as of May 2025) and I can’t wait to see the new and improved facilities and roads!!

I have not visited this state park for over 30 years so this was a trip back to memory lane. We did some hiking on the Big Woods and Sugarbush trails through their Beech and Maple virgin forest which is truly a deep woods experience. We also got in the Cedar Falls trail which I highly recommend. The Lodge and Cabin areas are pretty much as I remember without having changed much so they appeared a little dated. We drove through the campground both the areas with electric and those without and saw the places I first camped as a kid about 55 years ago. The Lake Loop round is currently closed near the marina due to a bridge being replaced. The roads in some places need replacement since they look like they have only been heavily patched over the last 30 years. We also got a chance to see and walk the dam holding back Acton Lake. Overall a good day outside.
