Humboldt County Fairgrounds
Overview
The Humboldt County Fairgrounds provides a spacious and practical base for travelers visiting the historic town of Ferndale, California. Known for its distinct charm and Victorian architecture, this area offers a refreshing step back in time. The fairgrounds function as a reliable stopover that balances simplicity with an unbeatable location near the Pacific coastline. It serves as an excellent starting point for those looking to explore the rugged beauty of Northern California’s Lost Coast and the surrounding agricultural valleys.
Location & Surroundings
Situated on the western edge of the Eel River Valley, the park is surrounded by lush green pastures and active dairy farms. The Victorian Village of Ferndale is just a short walk or drive away, offering a picturesque main street filled with boutique shops, local art galleries, and cozy eateries. The air here is fresh and salty, often carried by the breeze from the nearby ocean. It is a peaceful environment characterized by wide-open horizons and a significantly slower pace of life compared to more urban stops.
Amenities & Park Features
This facility offers essential features designed for self-contained RVers and those seeking a no-nonsense stay in a historic setting. Most sites are level and gravel-based, comfortably accommodating various rig sizes. The park provides water and electrical hookups, with access to a convenient on-site dump station for waste management. Visitors can also make use of the restroom and shower facilities, which are maintained to support travelers during the busy fair season and throughout the year. The open layout makes it particularly big-rig friendly, allowing for easy maneuvering for larger motorhomes.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Nature enthusiasts will appreciate being near Humboldt Redwoods State Park, where the famous Avenue of the Giants showcases some of the world's tallest and oldest trees. For a coastal experience, Centerville Beach is only five miles away, offering dramatic cliffs, sandy shores, and bird-watching opportunities. History lovers should not miss a walking tour of Ferndale’s Main Street, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, the nearby Eel River provides a scenic backdrop for afternoon strolls and photography.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for travelers who value location and convenience over luxury resort-style amenities. It is a favorite for those attending local events, equestrian shows, or the annual county fair. If you are an RVer who enjoys quiet evenings and exploring historic small towns, this park fits your travel style perfectly. It is also a strategic choice for photographers and nature lovers who want a central hub between the redwood forests and the rocky California sea.

I loved the Humboldt County Fair! This was my first year I attended and it had everything I expected, music, the carnival, the animals and a band. I had expected there to be more barns and more music acts, but I did attend the Saturday of the final weekend. Loved it.

Had dinner there with the Rotary club. My first time there. Was pleasantly please by the number of folks attending. The lobster was so yummy and the steak melted in your mouth. I enjoyed the event and the hall.

This is a good stop for RVers traveling through. The bathroom and shower facilities are old but clean. It's in the middle of a rural area and very quiet, so there's no traffic noise. I visited in January and there was no trouble getting a spot.

Nice quiet campground at a reasonable cost. Only downside is the RV dump which could use some updating

The fair is still on for this year and mostly the same as it has always been. There are different carnival rides on the midway and some of our favorites are missing. No bumper cars, Tsunami, Gravitron, Swirling Swings, Jumanji, or Merry-Go-Round this year (2021), but there are other rides like the Zipper, the giant slides, Dizzy Dragons, Blackbeard, Mardi Gras (a house of mirrors!), and a Ferris Wheel. There are also the farm animals, live shows, arts and crafts, and flower exhibits. And of course carnival games and vendors. Be sure to bring cash this year. The only ATM is out of order and while most vendors take cards, there are still some cash only sellers. The fair is enforcing a masking policy, but many people just ignore it and go without masks. They ask people to keep 6 feet apart, but let's get real. This is the fair and there are crowds of people of all ages milling about. Even if they are wearing masks, they will take them off to snack on cotton candy and corn dogs while pushing past you in their excitement to get to the next cool thing.

The host is great! Campground price is just right. Bathrooms could use an update but it's usable and they are ADA compliant. Thank you.

This place does not look like much and is VERY casually run. The place was only 25% occupied when we were there and we were told to take any site. There is a plethora of signage near the entrance with some very confusing signs and some that are downright inconstant. There is an office to the left near the second entrance to the park which is along the right side of a several acre parking lot. The sign "office" is not obvious but I suppose the building should be self explanatory. It wasn't for us, we read the signs and looked for a camp host. We did find a grouch that told us to go to the office. The sites have just water and electricity. The dump station is well hidden behind some fairground buildings. Talk to somebody in the office and have them draw you a map so you find it going in the right direction. The dump station is a mess so don't wear good shoes or clothing. One bit of good news, the area is mostly grass. It is not smooth so step carefully but at least it's grass. Alas, this fairgrounds RV Park is just mile from Ferndale and so is very handy. The next closest RV park is east of an unbelievably old narrow two-lane bridge that you must cross to get to Ferndale. If you are squeamish about taking your RV across long narrow bridges, stay at a Park on 101 and drive your toad or tow vehicle into Ferndale (it's only a few miles from 101 into Ferndale). The price was not bad at $28 in July 2016.

Great County Fair in 2019! Hat day was so fun to watch as were the races. Food was good and I was happy to see some locals like College Cake Balls.
