Humboldt-Toiyabe/ Angel Creek Campground
Overview
Nestled within the vast Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, Angel Creek Campground offers a serene mountain retreat just outside Wells, Nevada. Sitting at an elevation of approximately 6,200 feet, this Forest Service gem serves as a quiet gateway to the rugged East Humboldt Range. It provides a rustic, natural camping experience that contrasts sharply with the nearby desert floor, offering cooler temperatures and fresh mountain air for weary travelers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated along the paved Angel Lake Scenic Byway, roughly eight miles southwest of Wells. The landscape is a beautiful transition zone where high-desert sagebrush meets lush aspen and mahogany groves. From many sites, campers can enjoy sweeping views of the valley below or gaze up at the towering peaks. It is an ideal spot for those seeking a peaceful, remote atmosphere without venturing too far from primary travel routes like Interstate 80.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities here lean toward the rustic side, emphasizing a true dry camping experience. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, and the campground provides access to vault toilets and seasonal potable water. While there are no electrical or sewer hookups, the paved parking pads can accommodate many mid-sized RVs and trailers. The sites are well-spaced, offering a level of privacy that modern commercial parks rarely provide.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the stunning Angel Lake, located just four miles further up the canyon. This glacial cirque lake is perfect for fishing, non-motorized boating, and photography. Hikers can access several scenic routes, including the Greys Lake Trail, which meanders through wildflower meadows and rocky terrain. For those interested in local history, the nearby town of Wells offers a glimpse into Nevada’s ranching past, while the surrounding wilderness provides endless opportunities for wildlife viewing.
Who This Park Is Best For
Angel Creek is best suited for self-contained RVers who appreciate solitude and natural beauty over luxury resort amenities. It is a fantastic choice for nature photographers and hikers looking for a basecamp to explore the East Humboldt Range. If your travel style involves unplugging from the digital world to enjoy starry nights and mountain breezes, this campground fits perfectly. It is also an excellent stop for cross-country travelers seeking a scenic, quiet detour.

Nice campsites with picnic table, firepit, and grill. Water available. Sites are a bit on the small side, which is probably fine for most people, but we had 2 tents. Cow pies around, but we didn't see any cows, only mule deer. 🙂

We were there on the last night of camping for the season. The toilets were really disgusting with live and dead flies everywhere, The campsite was nice, some cow patties, pretty location, convenient. I can only guess that the camp host, who we never saw, was no longer engaged.

Pretty happy with my overnighter passing through. Some shade, tables, grills, easy to access off the road, water, restrooms, hiking nearby. Most sites are spread our decently, but some are closer together in case you're in a group.

Very nice campground in NE Nevada, not to far from the I-80. Nice private sites, some that will accommodate RVs at least 30' in length. Only one water spigot (actually a pump that requires two person to get water). Vault toilets that are poorly maintained, but still usable.

Such a beautiful spot. The camphost was beyond amazing; super friendly, helpful with suggestions of things to do, and really created a sense of community at the campsite. Our kids can't wait to go back.

Very nice little campground. I stopped for one night on the way to Yellowstone. I booked site 12 through recreation.gov and I really lucked out. Outstanding site. CG is 800ft above Wells, NV and gets cooler at night.

Beautiful spot at 6650 ft elevation, with friendly camp hosts. One loop is first come first serve and the other loop can be reserved on recreation.gov If coming without reservations be sure to bring cash for the correct amount. Very clean vault toilets on site.

Campground was closed. But the drive was beautiful. Opens around July 4th depending on weather. I'm definitely going back!

Stunning fall colors and snow capped mountains. Spent one night there on our fall camping trip. Only a few other campers, so we really had the place to ourselves. Super quiet, short drive off of highway 80. Great place to ride a bike, if you want some serious exercise. The bathrooms were clean.

First I would like to say, beautiful little campground . But at our site#16 we had access to nice little woods to walk with dogs. Only to find human waste & tp. Reported to host. Was not taken care of while we were there, but still charged full price.
