Humboldt-Toiyabe/Angel Lake Campground
Overview
Located at an elevation of over 8,000 feet in the East Humboldt Range, Angel Lake Campground offers a stunning alpine experience within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. This destination is situated in a dramatic glacial cirque framed by jagged peaks, providing a breathtaking backdrop for travelers seeking a rugged, natural escape. Unlike standard roadside stops, this campground is defined by its glacial lake views and the serene silence of the high Nevada mountain wilderness.
Location & Surroundings
The campground is situated 12 miles south of Wells, Nevada, at the end of the scenic Angel Lake Road. The drive involves a steep mountain climb with several switchbacks, rewarding visitors with panoramic views of the Clover Valley below. Surrounded by subalpine fir and rugged granite cliffs, the area feels worlds away from the arid basins nearby, offering significantly cooler summer temperatures for those traveling through the Great Basin region.
Amenities & Park Features
As a Forest Service facility, the focus here is on primitive charm rather than modern luxury. There are no hookups available, so RVers should arrive with full water tanks and ample battery power for their stay. The park provides paved spurs, potable water spigots, and vault toilets. While the sites are paved and well-maintained, they are generally best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs due to the tight turns and high-altitude mountain topography.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of recreation directly from their campsites. Angel Lake is popular for trout fishing and non-motorized boating, such as canoeing or paddleboarding. Hikers can access the Greys Lake Trail or explore several routes leading toward Winchell Lake. The cliffs surrounding the water are famous for wildlife viewing, where visitors often spot mountain goats and bighorn sheep traversing the vertical rock faces overlooking the camp.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize scenic beauty and direct outdoor access over modern resort amenities. It is a perfect fit for photography enthusiasts and those looking to escape the summer heat of the Nevada valley floor. If you enjoy a quiet, off-the-grid experience and are comfortable navigating steep mountain roads, this high-altitude retreat offers a truly memorable stop in northeastern Nevada.

Absolutely gorgeous. Part of the lake was frozen still. I did cast a few times and had bites.

If you want away from it all, this is the Campground for you. You drive 8-12 miles up for it. But the beauty is amazing. The colors of the leaves are spectacular!

Our actual camping experience was great! Loved our campsite, neighbors were courteous of each other. Camp host was an absolute wonderful lady who kept the campgrounds and facilities in tip top shape. Taking our little blow up kayak on the lake was fun. We enjoyed fishing. The only reason I dropped a star is because of the amount of fishing line, hooks, and garbage we saw on one of the shores we were fishing from and hanging out on. I brought a Grocery bag and cleaned up for a straight hour and a half. It is a safety concern for both the wildlife and the human visitors, as well as just a visual reminder that some people don't clean up after themselves. I know some of it is accidental and can't be helped when lines snag on rocks or trees and water levels are higher..but this was pretty crazy. It made me think of Mirror Lake in Washington State -- lots of visitors to fish and camp, but people left tons of fishing supplies and garbage behind. Heartbreaking. But the campgrounds and bathrooms themselves were wonderful. Would definitely go back. And now one of the beaches is clean and ready for a relaxing day!

The drive up to the campground is not for the faint hearted, but I made it up in my little Chevy Malibu. The road has switchbacks, sheer drops, and no guard rails. However, it all pays off when you get to the campground. The views of the waterfall, Angel Lake, and the surrounding mountains are spectacular. Take time for a hike up to the waterfall and a dip in the lake. The bathrooms were clean. The camp host was friendly and helpful. My site had a flat gravel area perfect for a tent. My only suggestion is to find ways to make your own shade and reduce the daytime heat. If you're tent camping, leave your rain fly off during the day or swarms of insects will find it a lovely place to gather. Be sure to wake up early to catch the sunrise!

Absolutely beautiful. Words can't describe how amazing and surreal this place is! The road going up has a couple of tight areas but was in excellent condition and the views from the road were jaw dropping! The campground is really nice! The bathrooms are clean!!!! The spots are really nice but there are lots of bushes so be prepared for the bugs and the brave little squirrels!! The lake was just a short walk from the campground. Amazing place to visit, will definitely be back time and time again!

Found this gem on a cross country tour a few years back. Some of the most amazing and peaceful camping ever!

I stayed here several years ago and it is to this day one of my most cherished camping memories. Absolutely beautiful. It is a haul up there, for sure, so be mindful if you’re arriving at night time like we did. But waking up the next morning to the stunning surroundings was beautiful beyond words.

Great campground! Very clean, best bathrooms I've ever seen. Host (Lance) was great. I don't think I ever saw him where he wasn't completely filthy, up to his knees in work. You could tell he likes his job. Our family will be back for sure
