Humboldt-Toiyabe/Hilltop
Overview
Hilltop Campground offers a refreshing high-altitude retreat within the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area, managed by the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Perched at an elevation of approximately 8,400 feet, this destination provides a dramatic escape from the neon lights and desert heat of the Las Vegas valley. Visitors here exchange the sound of traffic for the rustle of mountain mahogany and ponderosa pines, enjoying temperatures that are often 20 degrees cooler than the city below.
Location & Surroundings
Located roughly 45 minutes northwest of the Las Vegas Strip, the campground is situated along the scenic Lee Canyon Road. The journey to the site involves a winding ascent through varied life zones, transitioning from the Mojave Desert to a lush alpine environment. The campground is uniquely positioned on a ridge, offering spectacular views of the desert floor and the surrounding peaks of the Spring Mountains, making it a prime spot for photographers and nature lovers.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional Forest Service site, the amenities focus on a rustic, back-to-basics experience. The park features paved parking spurs, picnic tables, and fire rings at each site. While there are no electrical or sewer hookups, travelers have access to vault toilets and seasonal drinking water. RVers should note that the sites are best suited for smaller to mid-sized rigs, as the winding roads and mountain terrain can be challenging for the largest motorhomes.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The area is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, featuring the popular Desert View Overlook, which is just a short walk away and provides accessible views of the valley. Hikers can challenge themselves on the North Loop Trail, which leads toward the summit of Mount Charleston. During the winter months, nearby Lee Canyon offers skiing and snowboarding, while summer visitors enjoy bird watching and exploring the unique limestone cliffs that define the local landscape.
Who This Park Is Best For
This campground is ideal for nature-focused travelers who prefer solitude and scenery over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for smaller RV owners or van-lifers who are comfortable with dry camping in exchange for unparalleled access to alpine hiking. If your travel goal is to find a quiet home base that balances proximity to Las Vegas with the rugged beauty of the high Nevada wilderness, Hilltop Campground is an excellent choice.

Beautiful place to escape the Vegas heat... went from ~110 in town to mid 70s with chilly nights that dipped into the high 30s to low 40s... again incredible break from the Vegas summer... would recommend to locals or tourists passing through. Met some cool folks at the sight next to mine, got some rad drone footage that I'm working on... great spot!!

Great place to camping with kids,in summer is a great place, cool no to noisy, has restroom but no sink and no running water. Good thing you can reserve a spot in online. There is wood dispenser for $20.

Hey, so we took the kids to Mt. Charleston for a quick camping trip from North Las Vegas – about 45 minutes away. We found this cool spot, Hilltop, last year; it's got a toilet but no sink, but the views are amazing and it's so much cooler than the city. We grilled out and slept in our rooftop tent, but it got down to 49 degrees in June, so we left before sunrise. We'll definitely go back!

Great place for camping. Some sites are very nice and secluded. Bathrooms are very accessible throughout the campgrounds. Stunning views during the day and incredible at night. Can see the city light depending on the site you pick. Has cell reception most parts.

Nice affordable spot. Has grill, fire pit and picnic table. Close to hiking trails and offers some great views. Restrooms available. Trash bins nearby. No cell phone coverage so download the map and anything else you need in advance. Come with a full tank of gas too. No service stations nearby.

Hilltop is a beautiful camp ground, my family and I have been camping here for years. I am really curious on what has happened to the camping community. I went early Friday to reserve a site, paid and put the stub showing I had paid. When we got to the site a family was there and our stub was gone. They had no remorse or empathy for what they did and the man took off his shirt, trying to threaten my husband. Luckily there was one spot available that opened last minute and we were able to camp there. As I am writing this the group behind us are being very loud and inconsiderate at 12 am. You go camping to get away from the city and enjoy nature. If you are going to be up all night drinking stay home and go to a bar!! I feel sorry for the children being raised by parents who think it’s ok to steal someone’s campsite they already paid for. It’s sad. People also drive fast around the campsite where children are playing. We wont be camping here again

Beautiful area, amazing views from our campsite. The concrete pad under the picnic table presented a unique challenge for securing our dining canopy, but nothing a good bit of Paracord couldn't fix. Very quiet aside from one camper that loudly played one song on repeat long into the night, which park staff never addressed. Aside from that, great experience!

The views from here are amazing. It is really quite and peaceful. Nature embraces you here. She's very welcoming. Just take care of her.

Small but nice campground overlooking the desert valley. Nice views and clean sites well maintained.

Pretty special campground, placed up on a hilltop. Several spots are first come first serve. There are pit toilets, and excellent views.
