Humboldt-Toiyabe/Hope Valley
Overview
Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest's Hope Valley area offers a pristine escape into the High Sierra. Situated at an elevation of approximately 7,000 feet, this destination is defined by its expansive mountain meadows and the gentle flow of the West Carson River. It provides a quiet alternative to the more crowded areas of Lake Tahoe, emphasizing a primitive camping experience that allows travelers to disconnect and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of Alpine County.
Location & Surroundings
Located near the junction of Highways 88 and 89, the park sits in one of the most photographed valleys in California. The surroundings are characterized by jagged granite peaks and dense groves of aspen trees, which turn a brilliant gold every autumn. Its proximity to Markleeville allows for quick trips into town for basic supplies, while the immediate area remains secluded and wild, offering spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada range that change with the passing light.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional forest service site, meaning travelers should prepare for dry camping without electrical, water, or sewer hookups. The sites are designed to accommodate a variety of rig sizes, though larger motorhomes should check specific site lengths for suitability. Features include:
- Paved or gravel parking spurs
- Heavy-duty fire rings and picnic tables
- Vault toilets and seasonal potable water from hand pumps
It is important for RVers to arrive with full fresh water tanks and empty waste tanks to fully enjoy the rugged utility and quiet atmosphere of the park.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for those staying in the valley. Anglers will appreciate the proximity to the river, while hikers can access the Pacific Crest Trail just a few miles away. A short drive leads to Grover Hot Springs State Park, where visitors can soak in mineral pools after a long day of exploring. During the summer, the Blue Lakes area offers additional boating and fishing opportunities, and Kirkwood Mountain Resort provides seasonal mountain biking and hiking.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for RVers who prioritize peace and quiet over resort-style amenities. It is a perfect fit for self-contained rigs and travelers who enjoy off-grid living in a scenic environment. If you are a photographer looking for stunning landscapes or a fisherman seeking mountain trout, this park offers an authentic California wilderness experience. It is particularly suited for those who appreciate the cooler mountain air and the simple pleasure of a campfire under a dark, starry sky.

We did not see anything interesting at Hope Valley but on the way to Hope Valley from Luther Pass there is a beautiful space with stunning streams in between. Park your car at the shoulder and check it out!

Awesome campground! There is drinking water and bathrooms. Our campground came with 2 picnic tables, two spots for tents, a fire pit, and two anti-bear overnight food storage lockers. The campground host, David, was incredibly nice and professional! Keep in mind there is no cell service. Finally you can buy firewood at the campsite!

My family had a great experience at this campground. The campsites were immaculate with new tent pads, a fire pit, camp stove stand and BBQ. The water faucet was close to our spot, was ice cold and tasted so nice. The walk to the river was short and accessible for our small children. The bathrooms were always clean and stocked. The camp host, Dave was very friendly and helpful while not being over bearing like some camp hosts can be. He showed up with firewood at the perfect time each day. My Mom's battery died and when I asked if he had phone service so we could call AAA, he just came up immediately with a jump pack and started her car! No cell service with T-Mobile. This place is a true gem. No bears. There is a trail head at the rear of the campground with offers stunning views of the valley. Will definitely be going back. 10/10

We’d gone up to Hope Valley to enjoy the fall colors of the Aspen trees and were not disappointed.

We've stopped here once to check it out, but then drove a few more miles towards Blue Lakes and camped out in a nice meadow just a few yards off the road and close to the West Fork of the Carson River. Around 30 years ago, the second half of Blue Lakes Road was an "off road adventure" but then it was widened and paved.

My wife and I are currently staying at the Hope Valley Campground and are highly impressed with this year‘s host. He is extremely friendly, very active in overseeing the campground, keeps the bathrooms in very good condition and is very helpful!
