Huron-Manistee/Hemlock

Overview

Hemlock Campground offers a serene, back-to-nature experience within the expansive Huron-Manistee National Forests. Situated on the western shores of Lake Mitchell near Cadillac, this destination is a perennial favorite for those seeking a quiet retreat among towering evergreens. Unlike modern commercial RV resorts, this park focuses on the natural beauty of Northern Michigan, providing a peaceful environment where the sounds of the wind through the trees and the calls of local waterfowl take center stage over highway noise.

Location & Surroundings

The campground is nestled deep within a dense canopy of mature hemlock and hardwood trees, creating a private and deeply shaded atmosphere for almost every site. Its prime position on Lake Mitchell provides visitors with immediate access to over 2,500 acres of pristine water. The surrounding Cadillac area is characterized by its rolling hills and vast interconnected trail systems, making it a premier gateway for those who want to explore the rugged and beautiful landscape of the northern Lower Peninsula.

Amenities & Park Features

As a managed Forest Service facility, the amenities at this location prioritize a traditional, rustic outdoor experience. The park features spacious, level campsites equipped with heavy-duty fire rings and sturdy picnic tables, making them suitable for smaller RVs, vans, and trailers. While there are no on-site electric or water hookups, guests have reliable access to vault toilets and clean potable water via traditional hand pumps. A convenient, well-maintained boat launch is located directly within the park boundaries, allowing for easy entry for fishing boats, canoes, and kayaks.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw here, with Lake Mitchell fishing for walleye, bass, and northern pike being a significant highlight for many visitors. The nearby Mackenzie Trail offers miles of varied terrain perfect for hiking and mountain biking throughout the summer months. Just a short drive away, the city of Cadillac provides access to local shops and regional dining, while the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center offers fascinating educational exhibits regarding Michigan’s diverse wildlife and the history of conservation in the state.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is primarily ideal for boondockers and minimalist travelers who prefer natural solitude and privacy over high-end luxury amenities. It is a perfect fit for dedicated anglers and enthusiastic paddlers who want to be just steps away from the water's edge at all times. If you enjoy the challenge and peace of dry camping in a dense forest setting and value a quiet, low-tech getaway far from the crowds, Hemlock Campground provides the authentic Northern Michigan experience you are searching for.

It was a lot of fun going down the Manistee river, and seeing the Manistee National Park, we also went to the fishery there and learned about Chinook salmon and sea lamprays.

MRT is highly recommended for hikers/backpackers of all levels. More experienced hikers can do the NCT to MRT loop for a great 1-3 night experience. Or just an in and back on the Manistee River Trail, as far as you feel comfortable. Slow down and enjoy the beauty of the Manistee River Trail.

This forest was the perfect place to drive through on our way to Mackinaw City. I was driving through and there was a giant spot of dead trees. I don’t know if a fire happened, but it was truly spectacular!

We paddled 40 miles on the Pine River and spent two nights camping out along the river. It is one of my top favorite rivers in Michigan.

The perfect Airbnb getaway located along The Dragon Trail in the Huron-Manistee National Forest: "River Bluff Retreat" on Petoskey Dr., Stanwood, Michigan. The property has boat slips, swimming beach, fire pits (wood provided), and great fishing on the River. Overnight rates are fantastic! Highly recommend.

I live in Huron-Manistee National Forest. IT IS VERY RUSTIC AND CLEAN. Lots of camping sights and lakes to fish. Trails for minnie bikes, go carts, side by sides. Trails can run from Newaygo to White Cloud, Brohman, Baldwin all the way to Traverse City.

Absolutely gorgeous forests and views! Lots of wildlife and beautiful plants. Trees were breathtaking. We honestly did not want to ever leave. Loved that we could ride the Orv trails. Some garbage glass and shotgun casings in rest spots thanks to ignorant people but generally speaking was very clean. So many creeks and wetlands. A true oasis of beauty and life.
