Huron-Manistee/Jewell Lake

Overview

Jewell Lake Campground offers a quintessential Northern Michigan experience within the Huron-Manistee National Forests. Located near the small community of Barton City, this federal recreation site provides a peaceful escape from the hustle of modern life. It is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and focuses on preserving the natural beauty of the 193-acre lake it borders, providing a serene backdrop for your next outdoor adventure in the heart of Alcona County.

Location & Surroundings

The park is nestled deep within the dense hardwoods and pines of Northeast Michigan. The landscape is dominated by the shimmering waters of Jewell Lake, which serves as the central hub for activity. The remote setting in Barton City ensures minimal light pollution and a quiet atmosphere, making it an ideal spot for those who enjoy the sounds of nature. The surrounding forest provides a lush buffer from the outside world, creating a private and secluded feel for campers.

Amenities & Park Features

As a National Forest campground, the facilities are rustic and primitive, making it best suited for self-contained RVs or those who enjoy dry camping. The park provides several essential features for a comfortable stay:

  • Vault toilets and seasonal pressurized water stations available for guest use.
  • A paved boat launch providing easy access for fishing and paddling.
  • A designated swimming beach and a peaceful lakeside picnic area.
  • Spacious, shaded campsites equipped with heavy-duty fire rings and tables.

Because there are no electric or sewer hookups, travelers should arrive prepared for a true off-grid experience amidst the trees.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors to this region. Anglers frequent the lake for its healthy populations of largemouth bass and northern pike. For those who prefer land-based activities, the Jewell Lake Trail offers a scenic path through the forest for hiking. A short drive takes visitors to the shores of Lake Huron in Harrisville or the scenic highbanks of the Au Sable River, which is world-famous for its trout fishing and canoeing opportunities.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for boondockers and nature lovers who prioritize natural beauty over resort-style amenities. It is an excellent fit for small to mid-sized RVs looking for a quiet base camp to explore Northeast Michigan's wilderness. If your ideal trip involves unplugging from technology and spending your evenings around a campfire under a canopy of stars, Jewell Lake is the perfect destination for your travel style.

A great place to take the family. Camping is always great. My family loves the beach and the walk path. You have to be careful with the bathroom at the boat launch. The door often gets stuck.

Paved CG with paved pull thru large sites. Clean updated vault restrooms. Camp host. Near-by Au Sable river.

Too much trash, plastic bags, pop & beer cans, etc. Many burn pits with unburnable garbage in em. Obviously it is not taken care of, even weekly, by whomever is supposed to. Too bad people clean up after themselves also.

This state forest campground is very secluded in the middle of nowhere. Barton City is very nice and is really the only town in the area. All of the other little towns that are remotely close to Barton city are indeed very small just as Barton City (population of 548 people) is. With that said, Harrisville, which borders Lake Huron, is about 20 minutes away. The campground is very nice if you enjoy your privacy. The sites are very spacious. I went in the middle of July and the campground was like 1/10th full. It is a very quiet place, since the place does not fill up often. Jewel Lake is quite pretty as well. More often than not, it seems as if that you could probably have the lake to yourself. I would assume that locals do come here when the weather very hot. But generally speaking, the beach doesn't seem to fill up. Overall, this is a campground that not too many people know about and that may be for the better.

Make sure you stake out the good sites. You may get sniped.

Really enjoyed ourselves. Adorable little lake. Nice Sandy Beach. Primitive camping but each site has a fire pit with a folding grill. The vault toilets got pretty rank in the heat but later in the evening as it cooled down they didn't smell quite as bad. Overall nice campground
