Huron-Manistee/Old Grade
Overview
Old Grade Campground offers a quiet, natural retreat within the Huron-Manistee National Forests. Unlike modern commercial resorts, this location focuses on providing a peaceful sanctuary where the sounds of the wind through the hardwoods and the nearby river take center stage. It serves as an authentic Michigan camping experience for those looking to disconnect from the digital world and immerse themselves in the deep woods of Lake County.
Location & Surroundings
Situated just north of Baldwin, Michigan, the park is nestled along the Little South Branch of the Pere Marquette River. The surrounding landscape is characterized by dense forests and rolling terrain, providing a cool, leafy canopy during the summer months. Its position within the national forest ensures that visitors are surrounded by thousands of acres of protected wilderness, offering a true sense of seclusion and a front-row seat to the region's diverse ecosystems.
Amenities & Park Features
As a rustic forest site, amenities are functional and traditional to preserve the natural atmosphere. The park features vault toilets and a hand pump for drinking water rather than modern utility hookups. Each individual site is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, allowing for classic campfire evenings under the stars. The sites are generally well-spaced and shaded, offering a level of privacy that is often missing from crowded commercial parks.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Anglers will appreciate the proximity to world-class fishing, as Baldwin is frequently recognized as a premier destination for trout and salmon. The nearby Pere Marquette River is a designated National Wild and Scenic River, perfect for canoeing, kayaking, and drift boat fishing. Additionally, hikers can easily access segments of the North Country National Scenic Trail, which provides miles of exploration through the Michigan backcountry for those on foot or mountain bike.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is ideal for self-contained RVers who enjoy boondocking or dry camping in a serene, undeveloped environment. It is a perfect fit for nature photographers, birdwatchers, and travelers who prefer a back-to-basics travel style. If you value wildlife viewing and direct river access over amenities like swimming pools and Wi-Fi, Old Grade provides the perfect basecamp for your Baldwin adventure.

I will no longer be spending money in the Manistee. I will no longer travel down rivers that require government permits. The Pine River and all the liveries are in bed with the politicians when it comes to getting permits for a river. You better get your permits six months in advance! Even then you may not get one.

Lots of information available. Helpful people. Unfortunately, I arrived at lunch time and wasn’t able to get what I needed bc the person that handles it was out to lunch. Not a problem (for me. I’ll return).

Everyone was very friendly and helpful. The inside of the building is closed to visitors but business can still be conducted there. Got my park pass and additional information on National parks/forests.
