Idaho Panhandle/Sam Owen

Overview

Sam Owen Campground serves as a premier destination within the Idaho Panhandle National Forests, offering a quintessential Pacific Northwest camping experience. Situated on an expansive peninsula along the eastern shores of Lake Pend Oreille, this facility provides a serene escape for RV travelers seeking connection with nature. It is widely regarded for its stunning waterfront views and well-maintained grounds that harmonize perfectly with the surrounding Ponderosa pine and cedar wilderness.

Location & Surroundings

Located near the charming and historic town of Hope, Idaho, the park is nestled within a lush canopy that provides excellent shade and privacy between sites. The surroundings are dominated by the vast, crystal-clear waters of Lake Pend Oreille, the largest lake in the state. The geography of the peninsula creates a sheltered environment where visitors often share their space with a local population of incredibly tame white-tailed deer.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features over 80 campsites, many of which are equipped with paved parking spurs designed to accommodate mid-sized to large RVs. While the park maintains a rustic character without individual utility hookups, it offers high-quality communal amenities including a functional boat launch and a sun-drenched swimming beach. Each site typically includes a picnic table and fire ring, while central water hydrants and vault toilets are conveniently placed throughout the camping loops.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor recreation is the heart of the experience, with the lake providing endless opportunities for boating, kayaking, and world-class fishing for mackinaw and rainbow trout. The Sam Owen Trail offers an accessible 1.2-mile path through the forest, making it easy for hikers of all skill levels to explore the peninsula's interior. For a change of pace, the nearby city of Sandpoint offers a variety of local breweries, fine dining, and seasonal mountain festivals.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is an ideal match for nature-loving RVers who prioritize scenic beauty and direct water access over modern resort luxuries. It is a fantastic choice for families looking for a safe, engaging environment where children can swim and spot wildlife in their natural habitat. Those who enjoy dry camping in a tranquil, heavily forested setting will find Sam Owen to be one of the most rewarding stops in Northern Idaho.

Awesome campground. Great shade in the "scented leaf" and "dancing shadow" loops. "Red Sun" and "skipping stone" loops lack tree cover and foliage between camps pots but have great access to the lake compared to the upper loops with shade. Beach area was huge with a ton of tables and shelters free to use. There is a boat ramp here, however trailer parking is limited to 3 spots. The beach has a huge parking lot for those that drive down to the beach. Plenty of bathrooms around the campground, with real ceramic toilets. Spots in "scented leaf" are hilly and some can be steep. Spots in dancing shadow, red sun, and skipping stones are very flat. There were a ton of birds and and wildlife here. I would avoid bringing large fifth wheels through scented leaf campground, the road was very narrow and tree close to or overhanging the road. We had no issue getting out 29ft bumper pull through here though.

Primitive, clean, spacious, and shaded campground. Close beach with bike access. Local restaurant nearby. Very limited cell phone service.

This has been our favorite campground yet! The camp host was very welcoming and friendly and helpful. He has firewood and ice for sale! The campground was nice and well kept as well as the bathroom. We stayed at skipping stone loop spot 32. Water access was great, and the view well that was perfect. The shore is rocky, but not too difficult rocks are smooth. Dogs are welcome to swim and play at the lake shore. We will be back for a longer stay.

Love this campground and day use area! The concessionaire company that are running it for the Forest Service are doing a great job. The host and maintenance people are very helpful and kind. The dog friendly beach area is a serious bonus that made the stay very enjoyable for our family.

June 2023 The area has recovered nicely from the wind damage a couple of years ago. There isn't a lot of evidence from the earlier damage other than the remaining stumps. Grasses have grown back nicely to cover most of the damage. Red Sun loop which took most of the wind will have many sites without shade for years to come. The upper loops only had a couple of sites that lost trees.

Sam Owen has always been one of our family's favorite spots to camp over the years. It's located in a very beautiful spot on Lake Pend Orielle. The lake is always clear, clean and refreshing. We've camped here many times over Memorial weekend, and also later in the summer. The lake is comfortable later in the summer of course but we've swim a few times in spring as well. The campground lost a ton of trees a couple of years ago due to high winds, so it's quite exposed now. It sadly doesn't have the same privacy it had before, but it's still a great place. Sometimes we'll take a walk over to the Beyond Hope resort area and get a drink at the restaurant there and soak up in the sun and the view from the deck. There's a great pizza place in Hope only a few minutes away, which is a fun addition to a camping trip with the family.

Had a great experience camping here! The camp sights were clean and well taken care of. It wasn’t overly crowded. The camp hosts were really nice! The water was really clear and I didn’t feel like I was too close to other campers. We had enough space to where we still felt isolated enough and not overhear other campers all day or all night long. The fire pit was just the right size as well and the fire wood provided wasn’t too expensive. The beach is great. The water was surprisingly warm! We went swimming and also kayaking. I will be returning to go camping here again.

Had a beautiful camping experience on the skipping stone loop. Kelly was the campground hostess and she does a superb job of keeping everything spotless as well as being helpful with letting us know which sites had canceled. We enjoyed 3 pleasant days on the lake., thanks to Kelly. Her husband is very nice too.
