Indiana Beach Monticello KOA

Overview

Indiana Beach Monticello KOA offers a lively resort atmosphere centered around family fun and lakeside recreation. Located a stone's throw from the iconic Indiana Beach Boardwalk Resort, this destination provides a classic summer vacation feel. Guests can enjoy a mix of RV sites and vacation rentals while being surrounded by the natural beauty of Lake Shafer. It is a well-established park known for its community-oriented environment and its role as a gateway to one of the state's most popular amusement destinations.

Location & Surroundings

Situated in the heart of Monticello, the park is nestled along the shores of Lake Shafer. This region of Indiana is defined by its scenic waterways and lush, flat landscapes typical of the Midwest. The surrounding area maintains a nostalgic resort-town vibe, where the sounds of the boardwalk carry over the water on summer evenings. Being so close to the lake means visitors have easy access to boating and fishing opportunities, making it a prime spot for those who enjoy being near the water while staying in a developed setting.

Amenities & Park Features

The park is packed with features designed for active travelers and families. On-site, you will find a large swimming pool and splash pad, perfect for cooling off during humid Indiana summers. The park offers several specialized facilities to enhance your stay:

  • A dedicated KampK9 dog park providing a safe space for four-legged companions.
  • On-site mini-golf and a playground to keep younger travelers entertained.
  • A well-stocked general store and laundry facilities for extended stays.

The RV sites are well-maintained, offering varying levels of hookups to accommodate everything from compact trailers to large motorhomes.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw for most visitors is the Indiana Beach Boardwalk Resort, which features historic roller coasters, carnival games, and a full water park. Beyond the thrills of the boardwalk, visitors can spend time at Whyte Horse Winery for a more relaxed afternoon of tasting local vintages. Nature enthusiasts often head to the nearby Tippecanoe River for kayaking or explore the local shops in downtown Monticello. The lake itself remains a hub for motorized water sports, offering pontoon rentals and peaceful sunset views for those seeking a slower pace.

Who This Park Is Best For

This KOA is ideal for families with children who want to be in the center of the action. Its direct proximity to the amusement park makes it a top choice for those planning a multi-day theme park adventure without long commute times. Additionally, boating enthusiasts will appreciate the convenience of Lake Shafer’s public access points nearby. It is best suited for travelers looking for a social, high-energy environment rather than a secluded wilderness retreat, offering plenty of activities to keep every member of the family busy.

I liked the camp site and the bath house/restrooms. Nice to have had access to the splash pad. We visited the pool and drove our bikes around to the arcades and store. We had a nice time. First time there. I would definitely go back.

Overall campground is very big, close to Indiana beach and offers a shuttle to the park. Cons? Smells of pot the entire time. No curfew enforced. There was a large group playing though a DJ type set up with large speakers until midnight… asked the after hours line if they can have it addressed and nothing happened It kept my kids up all night. Tent campers take up all the RV sites in the front those are mostly electric only. The splash pad is on the Indiana beach campground side and was fun however a lot of the water interaction tools were broken, one of the slide was too and it could really use an upgrade but overall my kids liked it. The mini golf on the Indiana beach side was ran down, overgrown weeds. Bathroom on that side was nasty too I never got a chance to to check out the bathrooms on the KOA side but my husband said the one by the pool was good. This is definitely more of a party type campground from what I’ve seen it would have got 1 star but the staff was super friendly.

Absolutely WORST KOA we ever stayed!! NOT KOA quality!! Stay way!! We got a pull through and had tents next to us. In every campground (koa and others), there's always the rule that absolutely no tents are allowed in rv/trailer sites, but not herere (pictures of our neighbors in a pull through site). The campground has a quiet time starting at 11pm, with a fine of $100, that was a joke, the whole campground was loud all into the morning hours. The whole place was trashy, and the people were unfriendly. Not what you expect from a KOA!!

We booked a Deluxe Cabin here that was ADA-complaint. We came with family and booked 4 deluxe cabins together. We had about 8 adults and 8 kids in total. We loved having our own strip in the back of the KOA for yard games and the family gatherings. It was fun to see wildlife out our screened porch in the morning. Pros: Not too busy Great cabin layout for families Playground Pool Camp store has some conveniences Cons: -Not many amenities for a koa. The splash pad and mini golf are part of another campground. The mini golf costs extra and is not worth it - seems very run down. The neighboring camp ground has many attractions just left to rot it seems. - cabins are a step below hotel accommodations. They are “broom clean” and feel fairly dirty. - uncomfortable mattresses wrapped in many layers of plastic - have to bring your own bedding, towels, cooking utensils, plates, silverware. this adds a lot of stuff to bring and there is not laundry onsite - no beach!! Overall our stay was pleasant but I don’t think we’ll come back

We stayed at site 97 and over all it was ok except for the sewer hookup, see the photo. The trees have pros and cons. Shade is a pro, there wasn't a lot of shade, and trying to pull out is a con, trees are on all the right side corners. We were lucky enough to be able to pull through the site in front of us to make a wider turn to get out. The pool was clean but needs some maintenance. There were large chips out of the concrete and the paint needed to be done better; sloppy and faded. The campground was adjoining to the Indian Beach Campground and as it was explained to me they were the same campground a few years ago. There were still a few seasonal sites that were grandfathered. The dog park was large and fairly well maintained. All the staff were very friendly and informative about area attractions.

The campground was spacious. We stayed at the KOA. The game room on this side was good, not so much on the IB side. Many broken games. The lady at mini golf was a sweet heart. The front desk lady at KOA was very nice and informative. My grandson was thrilled with the splash pad. Most of the guards were great. But some teenagers were knocking littles down. I told the guard, and she said she told them to stop and they wouldn't. Very shy. Mind you the parents were there, so I went and told the kids, they said tell my parents, which I did. There were two guards throughout our stay that were more worried about their phone. Picture attached. But the others that were there were great. Constantly walking around. I think Evan was one name, he was great.

The place is clean. Plenty of bathrooms, which is helpful for little kids. Downside, the playground is worn down, put put is not at this location but the next door location. The pool, which was not open, which is fine; does not look appealing; at all. The people were not friendly at check in. I was told on the phone by guy that we could come at 2p for the cabin; we got there at 2p. I was pretty surprised when I found I would be charged $20 to check in early. When asked the same guy he told me that he got the times confused. The lady, immediately jumped out of her seat and demanded that I was charged $20 and checked to ensure he charged me. Or I could leave come back at 4p but I would need to leave the campground. I was surprised. I agreed after driving 2hrs to get there. The little red cabins were great, (we had #22,) for our family of 4. Downside, nothing for our kids to do but play at the sad little playground. The beds were not too bad and space in between was okay, little tight. Again, not a lot of room for our kids to play near us, as we cooked. We had to let them play in other empty spaces. We have been to other KOA sites and there has always been plenty of activities for kids to do. Other campers were not friendly and staff was frustrated already for the season. Sadly, we will be not staying here next month (booked already,) and choose another location with activities spots for kids and space for kids. My husband was right, this good if you are going to Indiana Beach but nothing else. Camp store was didn’t have a lot of things (we have stayed off season before and had stocked stores.) Just nothing to do on site with 2 kids who are 6yrs old. Best activities around: Van Meter Buffalo Ranch. Super cool and very kid friendly. 20 min drive and cost with a buffalo burger, chips and soda with ride to see up close buffalo, $30.00 for all 4 of us.

Indiana Beach/Monticello KOA - Monticello, Indiana We just finished a long weekend at this KOA Holiday located near Lake Shafer. We are typically cautious when we choose campgrounds and like to find good reviews and there wasn’t much available on this one except a fair amount of warnings and negatives about the adjoining Indiana Beach Campground (violence, rowdy crowds, police presence). Pros Friendly and helpful staff Clean areas Large sites Fair amount of shade Large pool (cold) Lifeguards Nice camp store Clean bath house and laundry facility KOA side was quiet and very family friendly Free trolley to Indiana Beach Amusement Park (we did not use) Fairly level sites Cons It is literally connected to Indiana Beach Campground and they share amenities. Indiana Beach has 1003 sites ranging from primitive tent to FHU and brings in a variety of campers. Indiana Beach campers wear wristbands which make it easy to identify and we noticed they were the only campers that sped around on golf carts blaring loud music. However, it was enforced for quiet times. Security guards constantly walk and ride patrolling the camp grounds (pro and con because we have never been anywhere that needed it, but nice to know it was there.) Limited activities for a Holiday. It had a basic playground and the pool. The splash pad is located next door and free to use. The kids did enjoy it but you can see the general neglect. General neglect it the running theme with the amenities available. Most of the games in the arcade don’t work. Water pressure was poor at sites and in the bath house. The showers are push button The mini gold is surrounded by ponds full of gross, stagnant water. Mosquitos were unbelievably bad as were gnats and ants. General feeling was if we were close we would go for a weekend, but we were 3.5 hours away and would not drive that distance for this facility again.
