Inyo/June Lake
Overview
Situated along the spectacular June Lake Loop, the June Lake Campground offers a quintessential Sierra Nevada experience. Managed by the Inyo National Forest, this destination is often referred to as the Switzerland of California due to its rugged mountain backdrop and crystalline waters. It provides a peaceful retreat where the scent of pine and the sight of granite peaks dominate the landscape, offering a rustic mountain escape for those traveling through the eastern Sierra.
Location & Surroundings
The park is located at an elevation of approximately 7,600 feet, tucked between the shoreline of June Lake and the charming mountain village nearby. The surrounding environment features dense stands of aspen and lodgepole pine, which create a vibrant display of color during the autumn months. Its position in the eastern Sierra provides a dramatic setting where steep canyon walls and glacial lakes create a secluded atmosphere despite being easily accessible from Highway 395.
Amenities & Park Features
This is a traditional forest service facility, meaning the experience is focused on the outdoors rather than modern luxury. The park features paved sites suitable for trailers and smaller motorhomes, though it is important to note there are no utility hookups available. Essential amenities provided at the park include:
- Flush toilets and seasonal drinking water stations.
- Mandatory bear-resistant food lockers at every campsite for safety.
- Individual fire rings and picnic tables for outdoor dining.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities within walking distance. Fishing for trout in June Lake and Gull Lake is a primary draw, while boat rentals are available at local marinas. Hikers can explore the nearby Parker Lake Trail for stunning alpine views and waterfall sightings. During the summer months, the eastern entrance to Yosemite National Park via Tioga Pass is just a short drive away, making this an excellent base camp for exploring the high country.
Who This Park Is Best For
June Lake is ideal for travelers who enjoy dry camping and seek a deep connection with the natural world. It is perfectly suited for photographers, anglers, and families who want a central location within the Inyo National Forest. Because of the specific site size limitations and the lack of hookups, it is best for those with small to mid-sized rigs who prioritize scenic beauty and immediate lake access over resort-style conveniences.

August has challenges for weather. In three days we've experienced them all. This evening was beautiful to finish the trip. Clear with lots of stars.

Nice place to camp, clean Restrooms with running water. People respect the 10pm quiet time. The lake is beautiful and clear.

Best lake campground. Host was very friendly and helpful (I thought he was retired hippy Santa Claus 🎅). Bathrooms were clean and well stocked. Next door is a marina store for ice and whatever you need for fishing (they were also super helpful and friendly).

We spent five days and nights at the June Lake Campground. We go here every year. It’s always clean as are the bathrooms also. You have your own beach to play on and the June Lake Marina is right next door. Walking to town for dining and shopping is a nice walk.:

T-6 in our opinion best tent spot. Close to trial to the marina and showers. Camp host Jack is awesome.! Bathrooms at campground are doable they flush and are cleaned daily. The camp sites could use some tree trimming and firepits maintenance but nothing really wrong here. Nice swimming spots kids friendly. We enjoyed our trip here.

The campsites were close together but had trees for privacy. There is not a lot of room for a tent. There was a small amount of trash in our site when we arrived. The bear box was dirty with ash and had to be swept out before we could use it. The fire pit is very shallow and needs to be cleaned out. It looks like it has never been cleaned out. The bathrooms are moderately clean. There is no direct access to the lake. You have to go around through either marina. There is one on each side of the campground. There is a trail but has not been maintained and is overrun with brush. The fishing here is incredible. If you are here to fish, this is a nice campground. The marina next door has sinks to clean your fish. They also have showers. This was the best feature, and it is not associated with the campground. There are a lot of mosquitoes, be prepared!

Lovely campground conveniently located close to marina and town. Camp host is super cool. Some sites are shaded and private, but if you are camped alongside the field at the center of the campground expect to bake in the sun and deal with a lot of noise. Several families booked sites and attempted to claim this field as their own, at the expense of other campers. They had their kids running through our site at 10 at night. The "adults" in charge were super loud and unresponsive to polite requests for quiet.

Great campground close to the water and town of June lake. We brought our own inflatable boat and walked it down to the shore and launched. Boat launching and fishing were free, which is a nice plus. Shops, restaurants, brewery, gull lake & hiking trails are walkable from this campground, which is not true of the other campgrounds in the area. It’s well maintained and family friendly. Would stay here again.

The Campground is really amazing. If your going to swim I recommend going all the way to the left side of the beach. Where there is less big rocks and has smooth sand. Both side of the lake is pretty cold so get prepared to shiver a little.

Cozy but rather small grassy sites surrounded by bushes. Close to the lake.
