Inyo/McGee Creek
Overview
McGee Creek Campground offers a quintessential Eastern Sierra experience, nestled in a high-elevation canyon near Mammoth Lakes. At an elevation of approximately 7,600 feet, this Inyo National Forest site provides a rugged and serene environment for those looking to escape the hustle of developed resorts. The sound of rushing water from the adjacent creek creates a peaceful atmosphere for campers. It is a popular destination for those seeking a back-to-nature stay while remaining within a short driving distance of modern town services.
Location & Surroundings
The park is located south of Mammoth Lakes off Highway 395, positioned perfectly between the towering peaks of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the vast expanse of Crowley Lake. The landscape is characterized by sagebrush, golden aspen trees, and dramatic granite cliffs that glow during the sunset. The surrounding wilderness offers breathtaking views and immediate access to the McGee Creek Trailhead, which leads hikers deep into the heart of the John Muir Wilderness and the high-alpine backcountry.
Amenities & Park Features
As a traditional forest service facility, the amenities focus on the essentials for dry camping. Each site is equipped with a heavy-duty bear box for food storage, a picnic table, and a fire ring. While there are no hookups or dump stations on-site, the park provides vault toilets and seasonal potable water spigots distributed throughout the loops. The layout is designed to accommodate various equipment types, though larger RVs should navigate the gravel access roads with care to ensure a smooth arrival.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor recreation is the primary draw for visitors staying at McGee Creek. Anglers frequent the area for world-class trout fishing in both the creek and nearby Crowley Lake, which is famous for its seasonal runs. Hikers and photographers can explore miles of alpine trails featuring vibrant wildflowers and hidden high-altitude lakes. For a change of pace, a short drive north leads to Mammoth Lakes, where visitors can enjoy mountain biking at Mammoth Mountain or visit local craft breweries.
Who This Park Is Best For
This location is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize natural scenery and outdoor access over modern luxuries. It attracts photographers, solitude seekers, and fly-fishing enthusiasts who enjoy quiet evenings and dark skies for stargazing. If you prefer a rustic camping experience and do not mind the lack of electricity or sewer connections, McGee Creek provides one of the most authentic and visually stunning home bases available in the Eastern Sierra region.

I would say it is one of the best hiking trails to enjoy fall colors in eastern sierra. When you hike up about 1-3miles you will see a lot of aspen trees and enjoy California Falls!! Yes it’s just 1-3miles. Only one downside is that there are a loooooooooooot people. So be aware of the crowds 😌

Came here for the fall colors and the trail did not disappoint. I would recommend hike up about 2 miles. The parking situation was terrible, good thing I came in a bike.

We backpacked for ~10 days in the John Muir Wilderness for wildlife surveys. Was a really special place to explore. Thank you to the amazing trail, the beautiful forest, the lakes and streams. We hope to be back, and spend more time adventuring in such a magical place.

Beautiful place to hike or trout fishing. High country views at the tree line. Be prepared for weather changes due to the altitude. Take your family and friends with the dogs….

McGee Creek Trail, Mono County We were already greeted with beautiful fall foliage along the creek next to the parking lot. However, this was a beautiful hike at every turn hiking next to the creek with a couple wet river crossings, a view of a waterfall in the distance, and I heard there is a beautiful meadow with some cascades after a few miles. Pro Tip: Parking does fill up by 9am(?) on the weekend but if you go around 1130/12pm some spots may open up from hikers coming back. The trail splits for a short period of time and rejoins. Take the trail on the left for more of the fall foliage and creek view. Note: Another hiker told me this hike is now closed for the season so check before going. Very nice hike. The creek was really flowing and there were a lot of nice blooms.

This is just south of the Mammoth Lakes turnoff on 395. We always go in late October to see the incredible fall colors. This is a gateway to the Hoover wilderness also. All of the canyons like this one along 395 have great fall colors and wilderness access with views of the huge mountains of the Eastern Sierra. Closed in winter, but well worth seeing the rest of the year.
