Izaak Walton

Overview

Izaak Walton State Recreation Site offers a peaceful retreat for those looking to experience the wild beauty of Alaska. Located in Soldotna, this park is uniquely positioned where the Moose River meets the Kenai River, providing a prime vantage point for some of the state's most legendary waterways. Managed as part of the Alaska State Parks system, it maintains a preserved natural environment for visitors seeking a rustic and authentic northern adventure.

Location & Surroundings

Situated conveniently along the Sterling Highway, the park provides easy access to the heart of the Kenai Peninsula. The surroundings are characterized by dense spruce forests and the rushing, glacial currents of the Kenai. While the park is close to the road for travel convenience, the riverside setting creates a buffer of tranquility, allowing campers to feel immersed in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge ecosystem while staying near local services.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional Alaska state park, focusing on the essentials of outdoor living rather than modern luxury hookups. Key features include a well-maintained boat launch, which serves as a gateway to the complex river system. The park provides vault toilets and drinking water, along with designated picnic areas and fire rings for evening gatherings. The layout is designed to capitalize on the forested terrain, offering a sense of privacy and seclusion between individual sites.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

World-class fishing is the primary draw here, with the park offering excellent access for sockeye and silver salmon runs throughout the season. Beyond the river, the city of Soldotna is just a short drive away, providing modern conveniences, local dining, and regional museums. For those looking to explore further, the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center is nearby, offering interpretive trails and educational exhibits about the area's diverse flora and fauna.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for dedicated anglers and travelers who prefer a rustic, self-contained camping experience over a commercial resort. If you enjoy the sounds of the river and the simplicity of dry camping, Izaak Walton is an excellent choice. It is best suited for those in smaller RVs or truck campers who value immediate water access and a quiet, natural atmosphere over high-speed internet or full utility hookups.

Excellent camping on the river. Usually not crowded. Fishing so so.

Small camping spots with overgrown wild weeds/flowers immediately around the spot. Pit toilets but short walk to River for fishing. Love the Alaska program to have PFDs available for kids!

Literally my favorite place 2 seconds from my house. Don't come here. It's taken.

Very cool spot to be at during the salmon runs. The amount of fish that stack up during certain times is crazy. Easy access to shore casting brings more people but still so cool to see soooooo many salmon.

I have always loved this campground. There is day use parking, and picnic tables if you just want to spend the day or use the boat launch. The camping spaces are nice and the road is paved. You do not want to bring rvs longer than 30 ft through here as the turns are pretty sharp for such large vehichles. Bring cash for the fee station

Nice campground, small spots, not really ideal for large RVs. Only two pull through spots. Well kept and quiet.

We got lucky on this park since there was nobody there, not even a camp host. The wilds were a little bit overgrown for my taste and there was no water on site.
