J.E. Roush Lake

Overview

J.E. Roush Lake Fish and Wildlife Area offers a serene escape for travelers seeking the natural beauty of northeastern Indiana. Spread across thousands of acres, this Indiana DNR property manages a reservoir designed for flood control and a wealth of outdoor recreation. It provides a peaceful atmosphere where the sounds of the local wildlife replace city noise, making it an ideal stop for those who prioritize open spaces and traditional outdoor pursuits. The park provides a rugged, authentic experience that honors the landscape of the Wabash River heritage.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just south of Huntington, IN, the park is nestled within the scenic Little River valley. The landscape is defined by the expansive 900-acre lake and surrounding woodlands, providing a lush backdrop for your stay. Its proximity to US-224 makes it easily accessible for RVers while maintaining a secluded, natural feel. The rolling terrain and waterfront views offer a quintessential Midwestern outdoor aesthetic right in the heart of Huntington County, making it feel miles away from the hustle of modern life.

Amenities & Park Features

Camping is primarily located at the Kil-So-Quah State Recreation Area. While the experience is more rustic than a private resort, the park provides features designed for comfortable outdoor living:

  • Electric hookup sites that accommodate various RV sizes.
  • Access to modern vault toilets and seasonal drinking water.
  • A premier shooting range with stations for archery, pistols, and rifles.
  • Several well-maintained boat ramps for launching fishing boats or kayaks.

These facilities ensure that while you are immersed in nature, you have the essential utilities needed for a successful camping trip.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, from exploring the mountain bike trails to fishing for bass and walleye in the reservoir. The nearby city of Huntington, known as the Lime City, offers local dining and historical sites for a quick day trip. Nature lovers should not miss the Little River Wetlands, which provide excellent birdwatching opportunities. Additionally, the park's designated hunting areas make it a popular destination during the fall seasons for licensed sportsmen looking for a convenient basecamp.

Who This Park Is Best For

This destination is perfect for self-contained RVers who enjoy a semi-primitive camping style focused on the environment. It is not a luxury resort with swimming pools or clubhouses; instead, it appeals to those who want to be immersed in the woods. If you are an avid angler or hunter, J.E. Roush Lake provides some of the best access in the region. It is also an excellent choice for families who want to unplug and focus on hiking, biking, and simple lakeside relaxation.

Update Oct 2023: no showers. No plans to build it seems. Update April 2023: they are building new bathroom? Showers? Off the beaten path, cheap, first come, no reservations, $12/ night non electric. No showers, no flush toilets, and nasty toilets. No entry fee, honor system. No camp store or firewood for sale. No local swimming. Small playground.

While I love this place, I have enjoyed it almost 20 years, it is now a small overcrowded loud dirty city. No longer enjoyable for hikes, bird watching, critter watching, swimming or kayaking unless you like kids running wild darting in and out of campsites, tonight one 10 ish yr old held onto the bumper of my truck driving thru the primitive area, while parents watched!!! Social Media, lack of manners, discipline and lack of respect to others always destroy the great 'off the beaten path' type of places I so enjoyed.

This is a good area to do some off trail exploring. I hunt here during the winter and do some fishing during the summer. The area has many access points and is pretty low traffic.

Great property for all kinds of activities, be sure you do your own research about laws, the office people are exactly that, and people don’t always know all of the laws.

We come out and go hiking out here with our kids and dogs. It’s so peaceful and beautiful out here. No traffic and really not many people which makes it a lot nicer for the dogs. They absolutely love exploring out here.
