J. Strom Thurmond Lake - COE/Hawe Creek

Overview

Hawe Creek Campground offers a serene escape on the South Carolina side of **J. Strom Thurmond Lake**. As a US Army Corps of Engineers facility, it prioritizes the preservation of the natural landscape, providing RVers with a tranquil lakeside experience. The park is known for its lush forest canopy and direct access to one of the largest reservoirs in the Southeast, making it a favorite for those who appreciate a slower pace of life and **uninterrupted natural beauty**.

Location & Surroundings

Located near McCormick, SC, the campground is situated on a peninsula within the Little River section of the lake. The terrain is characterized by rolling hills and dense stands of **hardwood and pine trees** that offer excellent shade and privacy for each campsite. The surrounding area remains largely undeveloped, ensuring that the dominant sounds are the lapping waves and local wildlife rather than traffic or city noise, providing a true **sense of seclusion**.

Amenities & Park Features

The park features 34 campsites, many of which provide **water and electric hookups** suitable for various RV sizes. The facility provides essential features to support a functional outdoor stay:

  • A dedicated **boat ramp** for easy deep-water access.
  • A fishing pier and well-maintained picnic areas for day use.
  • A central dump station and bathhouse with hot showers.

While the setting is rustic, these amenities ensure a comfortable stay for self-contained travelers looking for a clean and **well-managed government facility**.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Water recreation is the primary draw, with the lake being a premier destination for **largemouth bass fishing** and kayaking. For those who prefer land-based activities, the Stevens Creek Trail is accessible nearby, offering miles of scenic hiking through the woods. Visitors can also explore the historic town of McCormick or take a short drive to **Hickory Knob State Resort Park** for a round of golf or access to more extensive mountain biking trails.

Who This Park Is Best For

This campground is ideal for **outdoor enthusiasts** and families who want to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with nature. It is particularly well-suited for anglers and boaters who value having a launch site just steps from their rig. Hidden gem, never seen a cleaner campground than this one. Extremely quiet and every campsite has a view. Park Attendants are extremely helpful and are always available. Its even close to restaurants!

All I can say is this place is unbelievable!!! We were on site 6. Private and huge spot. (And our spot was smaller than most) Walter (camp host) is so friendly and helpful! He manages this place very well!! My only complaint……. PLEASE STAT OPEN LATER IN THE SEASON! It is closed during the best time to camp! We will definitely be returning next year!

This was a one night stop while traveling but the campgrounds were great. Nice sites, many right on the lake. The camp host was friendly and helpful with details on the campgrounds. Plan on staying here again for a longer stay. Like the space and layout. It has a boat ramp and would be ideal for fishing from boat or shore. We just enjoy the natural surroundings and peace it offers. We enjoy most of the Corp of Engineer campgrounds we have stayed at, and this is on the top of our list.

This probably isn’t a popular facility for children. There are no playgrounds and the data is less than hit and miss, so no evening Netflix and such. Phone service for calls is a little better, but still questionable throughout the campground. The town of McCormick is pretty small, but you have a grocery store and a well stocked hardware store. Some people might see this as a shortcoming. But this is one of the best places to get away from it all. The spaces are roomy and pretty private compared to most. Meticulously maintained by some of the most hospitable hosts you will ever meet too! The lake is quieter than most even in the summer, allowing for a peaceful sunset or sunrise depending on your spot. My only complaint is the campground is only open part of the year. We camp all year long and are really disappointed that this location can’t be one of our choices in the fall/winter.

My faith in Mankind has been restored. Please note that "Mankind" has nothing to do with (men),...but specifically the kindness of man, ...one man, our Camp Host, Mr. Walter Cooke. Our very pleasant stay at Hawe Creek Campground was due to Mr. Cooke's concern and personal care for our comfort and well being whilst staying at the campground. Thank you Walter for such a pleasant stay. Paul Dean ⚔️💂🇬🇧💂⚔️

Absolutely one of our favorite places to camp. Super clean campsites and bathhouses!!! And you can’t beat the great attendants both are phenomenal especially Walter!!! Walter helped us out in more ways than one. Can not say enough about this campground. Only hope that it will start to stay open longer for more camping there!!!

Absolutely beautiful views. Close boat ramp. Clean bathrooms. Love all the spurred butterfly flowers along the road. Will be returning here soon. Got home a few hours ago and miss it already. Its a beautiful and quiet campground. Wish I could live here.
