J. Strom Thurmond Lake - COE/Petersburg
Overview
Petersburg Campground is situated on the shores of the massive J. Strom Thurmond Lake, the largest U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project east of the Mississippi River. This facility offers a serene escape into the Georgia pine and hardwood forests. It is widely recognized for its spacious campsites and high standards of maintenance typical of COE locations. Visitors can enjoy sweeping water views and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it a premier destination for those looking to reconnect with nature.
Location & Surroundings
Located in Appling, GA, the park is nestled within the Lower Savannah River Basin. The landscape is defined by its rolling hills and dense woodlands that provide significant shade for most sites. Being on a peninsula, many sites offer direct access to the water or at least a clear view of the lake's vast horizon. The proximity to Augusta, Georgia provides a convenient balance between a remote wilderness feel and access to city services just a short drive away.
Amenities & Park Features
The campground features 93 sites, most of which provide water and electrical hookups to accommodate various RV sizes. The park offers several essential facilities for a comfortable stay:
- Modern bathhouses with hot showers and laundry services.
- A designated swimming beach and playground area.
- A two-lane boat ramp with a courtesy dock.
These features ensure that guests have everything they need for an extended lakeside visit while enjoying the natural environment.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do, as the lake is a hotspot for boating and fishing, particularly for largemouth bass and crappie. The renowned Bartram Trail passes through the area, offering miles of scenic hiking and mountain biking opportunities. History buffs can explore nearby sites in Appling, the oldest county seat in Georgia, or take a twenty-mile trip to Augusta to visit the historic riverwalk and local museums.
Who This Park Is Best For
This park is an ideal choice for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts who prefer a quiet, rustic environment over a high-traffic commercial resort. Because of the large, level sites, it is also a great fit for big-rig owners looking for a manageable lakeside retreat. It appeals most to families and retirees who value natural beauty, lake access, and the reliable infrastructure provided by the Army Corps of Engineers.

They are still closed. I rode by on the water and all the camp sites I could see look in good shape. I called the Army Corps of Eng. And they said may open in the Spring Hope they do

One of the best sites we've stayed in! Roomy sites, water, clean restrooms/showers. When we're in the area (and can) we stay here.

We come here often and stayed here after getting kicked off the blue ridge parkway due to hurricane Helene. We were one of six sites that were here for the storm. No one was injured but that beautiful park is a mess. Camp hosts Kevin and Amy lost their trailer when destroyed by a pine tree but thankfully they were in the other end. Very nice people and a pleasure to meet them. We've left 5 star ratings in the past but this time it's for the rangers, park service and volunteers that wasted no time checking on us and cutting us a pathway out, even before there was gas or a place to go to. These are pictures of the road in the first loop, the host's trailer and the boat ramp. I couldn't get through to the rest of the park. They've got a big job ahead of them but It was a five star park before the storm and it'll be a five star park when they're done.

We were very happy with the spacious campsite (Loop A #10 pull-through) right on the water. The lake was a bit low (pre Hurricane Helene).

Nice size site (7A) mostly level pad with a great view of the lake. Directly across from the bathhouse. The Bathhouse is old and outdated BUT everything was functional and cleaned. We regrettably only stayed two nights. Would have loved to stay longer.

This is a very nice place to camp. The staff Mr Bill and Christy are the best! Please don’t let them go anywhere. They are the best campground attendants that Petersburg has seen since Don and Margaret Ward. Bill and Christy are very friendly and very knowledgeable about the area and the rules. They go above and beyond to see that there gust have a positive and fun stay at Petersburg.

We enjoyed our short stay at this campground. The sites are large, the trees are tall, the sunsets are beautiful. Our site was right on the water, so peaceful and restful. The nights were quiet, the days were peaceful but for some boat noise in the distance. This was a great access point for the bike trails which we thoroughly enjoyed!

We had lot 36. Plenty of room for activities. Great for tents. Can't wait to come back.

Site 19. The site itself was gorgeous and huge. Plenty of privacy. But it is not big rig friendly. It does not show the half circle drive you have to navigate. We are not amateurs. We are seasoned full timers. Our toy hauler is 40 foot which was supposed to fit in the site. You can’t tell from the pics how steep the drive is but it’s steep. Pulling in while trying to avoid a tree - our rig went up on the side of the drive and literally almost flipped over. Worst experience ever. Virtually no cell service. Appling and the surrounding area is great. Please do your homework when it comes to these sites. Do not take the websites word that your rig will fit.
