James Kipp Recreation Area (BLM)
Overview
James Kipp Recreation Area offers a rugged, authentic Montana experience along the banks of the Missouri River. Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, this campground serves as a vital gateway to the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. It is a place where the landscape remains largely unchanged from the days of Lewis and Clark. RVers visiting this site can expect a peaceful, rustic environment that prioritizes natural beauty over modern luxuries, making it a favorite for those seeking solitude and a deep connection with the outdoors.
Location & Surroundings
Situated in Roy, Montana, near the Fred Robinson Bridge, the park is tucked within the iconic Missouri River Breaks. The surrounding terrain is characterized by dramatic badlands, sandstone cliffs, and expansive prairies that stretch toward the horizon. This location is notably remote, offering travelers a rare chance to disconnect from the digital world. The Missouri River flows right past the campground, providing a cool, lifegiving contrast to the arid, golden hills that define this legendary stretch of the American West.
Amenities & Park Features
As a BLM-managed site, the amenities here cater to self-contained travelers who enjoy a more traditional camping style. The park features 34 campsites equipped with picnic tables and fire rings for evening gatherings. While there are no electricity or water hookups at individual sites, visitors have access to vault toilets and potable water during the peak season. A major highlight is the robust multi-lane boat ramp, which serves as a primary access point for paddlers and motorized boaters. Large, ancient cottonwood trees provide essential shade across the campground area.
Nearby Attractions & Things to Do
The primary draw is the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, where visitors enjoy world-class fishing for walleye, sauger, and channel catfish. Many travelers use the park as a base for exploring the monument's unique geology and historical landmarks. Wildlife enthusiasts should keep their eyes peeled for bighorn sheep, mule deer, and bald eagles that frequent the river corridor. For those interested in history, the area is rich with the heritage of the Nez Perce Trail and early river steamboat navigation.
Who This Park Is Best For
James Kipp Recreation Area is ideal for boondockers and dry campers who enjoy being fully immersed in nature. It is particularly suited for anglers, hunters, and history buffs who want easy access to the water without the crowds of a commercial resort. If you appreciate vast starlit skies and the sound of the wind through the cottonwoods more than high-speed internet or paved pads, this remote Montana gem will fit your travel style perfectly.

It was beautiful in the Spring; an oasis in the middle of the endless plains.

In August 2017 I visited the James Kipp area to do some dark-skies research. The James Kipp area is in one of the darkest pockets of the continental US. These are skies that are unblemished by ANY light pollution from artificial sources. Most users of the camp site are in the area to hunt and fish, and I hear the sport is exceptional. Most have probably also noticed that at night, after the sun has set, the stars are beautiful. The below four shots are from my single night here on 8/28/2017. Note the utter lack of any visible artificial lights spoiling the horizons. I've done extensive travel to dark sites in the lower 48, including state and national parks, state and national forests, and other protected recreation areas. James Kipp is in the top tier of darkest skies in the US. If you visit here, make sure to appreciate the nighttime skies!

Beautifully treed sites right near the river. Water was off as they were upgrading. Paths to river could be cleared better.
