Jordan Lake/Crosswinds

Overview

Jordan Lake State Recreation Area features the Crosswinds Campground, a popular destination for those looking to experience the natural beauty of central North Carolina. Located just outside Apex, this park offers a peaceful escape with well-shaded sites nestled among the pines. It provides a perfect balance of outdoor recreation and accessibility to the Triangle region. The campground is part of a larger network of recreation sites, ensuring a well-maintained environment for all visitors looking for a classic camping experience.

Location & Surroundings

Set along the shores of a massive 14,000-acre reservoir, the park is defined by its lush hardwood forests and serene waterfront views. While the park feels secluded, it is conveniently located near Highway 64, allowing for easy travel to nearby urban centers. The surrounding area is a haven for wildlife, where visitors often spot bald eagles or ospreys while exploring the winding shoreline. The gentle topography makes for pleasant walks through the woods and creates a tranquil atmosphere that feels miles away from the city.

Amenities & Park Features

The Crosswinds Campground is designed for comfort without losing its rustic charm. Most sites offer water and electric hookups, accommodating various RV sizes and setups. While there are no sewer hookups at individual sites, a centrally located dump station is easily accessible for all guests. The park features clean bathhouses with hot showers and well-maintained facilities. Each site is typically equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, and the sites are generally spacious, providing a sense of privacy and room to breathe.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

Outdoor enthusiasts will find no shortage of activities at Jordan Lake. The nearby Crosswinds Marina provides boat rentals and fuel for those looking to spend a day on the water fishing or sailing. Hikers can explore miles of scenic trails that wind through the forest and along the lake's edge. For a change of pace, the charming downtown area of Apex, North Carolina offers local boutiques and dining just a short drive away. Cyclists also enjoy the nearby American Tobacco Trail for long-distance riding through the region.

Who This Park Is Best For

This park is ideal for nature lovers and families who prioritize outdoor activities over resort-style luxuries like swimming pools or clubhouses. It is a fantastic choice for birdwatchers and boaters who want to be steps away from the water. Because of its proximity to Raleigh and Cary, it also serves as a quiet home base for travelers who prefer a wooded, natural environment to end their day. It is particularly suited for those who enjoy a traditional camping experience with the essential convenience of RV hookups.

Beautiful Views around the lake with some campsites having direct lake access. Campground is Hilly and very wooded with various utilities available from site to site which varies by the Loop that you stay in. A good mix of both single and double sites, some primitive sites, and sites that are deep or shallow depending on the needs for your campers or RV.

It's a great quiet place to camp. I've gone here plenty of times in the past and will continue to into the future. I was in loop B site 48 and the showers were clean and the water was hot. The only complaint that I really have is our campsite was not cleaned up when we arrived at 6:30. There was trash spread around and the circle grill was out into the woods and bent all out of shape. I did let a ranger know but they don't have any replacements on hand so we had to go buy a grill.

We are staying in site B20. The campground is clean and it is heavily wooded. Mostly pines but still private between many spots, like ours. The dump station is far from the camping areas, almost at the front gate.

Great campground close to the lake. Benches for convenience . There was a trail down to the water, but we didn't see a beach access that has sand to sit by , so drove across the highway to the other side and visited Ebenezer Beach .

What a beautiful camp grounds and friendly staff. If you are looking for good tent camping or RV, with showers and bathrooms, this is the spot. Beautiful scenery and safe camping area.

My Favorite State Park, near Raliegh. Great for watersports, kayaking, sailing, and most others. The place encompasses nearly the entire lake, making all of it accessible by boat or hiking. Be aware of the rubber earing Teredactils A.K.A Black Vultures. Look them up. They really rip cars up. The rangers come thru and run them off if they spot them hanging out in the trees.

What a sweet spot. Boaters, campers haven. I believe a few sites actually have boat access! The bath houses are basic, well kept and the showers, three stalls, are hot. Walk to the “beach” or take a short drive over to a beach also within the park grounds. They have beach, playground and restrooms. The campsites are well divided with trees and brush. I believe they all have some amount of shade as this is a wooded area. Hard to believe you’re so close urban life out here. Grocery, restaurants all 20 minutes away. Find gas and fully stocked mart lass than 5 minutes drive. But be ready to pay for convenience! I highly recommend reserving in advance as I did not and the gate personnel did not arrive until 2pm that day. I later discovered reservations can be made at Reserve America day of arrival.

First time here for this Army Veteran. Stayed this past weekend 25 March- 28 March 2022. Campgrounds were clean. The view of the lake was awesome. Fishing on our boat was slow. Pretty windy on the lake. Staff was friendly. Had fun. Though the out of control barking mutt next to us was irritating. Will camp in our usual spot Kerr lake VA side.
