Kaibab/DeMotte

Overview

Nestled within the towering pines of the Kaibab National Forest, DeMotte Campground offers a serene, high-altitude escape for RVers heading toward the Grand Canyon. At an elevation of approximately 8,700 feet, this seasonal park provides a refreshing respite from the intense desert heat found in lower elevations. Travelers find a tranquil atmosphere where the focus is on the natural beauty of the Kaibab Plateau rather than modern commercial amenities, making it a premier choice for those seeking a genuine, quiet forest experience.

Location & Surroundings

Situated just seven miles north of the Grand Canyon National Park entrance off Highway 67, the location is unbeatable for North Rim exploration. The campground is surrounded by lush alpine meadows and dense stands of ponderosa pine, aspen, and spruce. Wildlife sightings, including the unique Kaibab squirrel and mule deer, are common occurrences here. The air is crisp and thin, and the surrounding wilderness feels vast, quiet, and largely untouched by urban sprawl.

Amenities & Park Features

This is a traditional forest service facility, meaning it is designed primarily for dry camping enthusiasts. While there are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at the individual sites, the park offers paved spurs that can accommodate most mid-sized RVs and trailers. Guests have access to potable water via shared spigots and clean vault toilets located throughout the loops. Each site is equipped with a sturdy picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for enjoying cool mountain evenings under exceptionally dark, starry skies.

Nearby Attractions & Things to Do

The primary draw is the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, which is significantly less crowded and more rugged than its southern counterpart. From the campground, visitors can easily access the Bright Angel Point Trail or take a scenic drive to Cape Royal for panoramic views of the canyon floor. Hiking and mountain biking trails crisscross the surrounding forest, offering miles of exploration through varied terrain. Nearby, the North Rim Visitor Center provides helpful educational exhibits and ranger-led programs.

Who This Park Is Best For

DeMotte is ideal for self-contained RVers who prioritize proximity to the Grand Canyon and a peaceful, rustic atmosphere. It deeply appeals to nature photographers, avid hikers, and those looking to disconnect from digital life, as cell service is often limited in this remote area. Because the sites are primarily boondocking-style, it is best suited for travelers with solar panels or large onboard tanks who enjoy a cooling forest breeze and the smell of fresh pine.

Stayed here in Oct. 2025 and everything is open! We even got one of the camp host spots when they didnt return after evacuating for the fire. The vault toilets on site are spotless and there is potable water for filling if needed. The Jacob Lake Inn & Restaurant is right across the street and is DELICIOUS! Get the pot pie and some cookies while youre here. We were able to drive to all of the lookouts on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Beautiful spot, easy to get to. $30 a night was a little rough to stomach for what was offered. I think we saw a camp host but they never introduced themselves.

What a wonderful time we had! We stayed in the Group A site. Beautiful Ramada and area. The bathrooms were cleaned daily and the trash was collected twice a day. The only thing we didn’t love was that there wasn’t actual individual sites. There were just divets around the Ramada. In the end, it was actually decent to have everyone face that way. Also the campfire pit had benches. We would love to come back here depending on what happens with this fire right now. It’s just a quick jaunt to the north rim but from what I’ve been told, it’s burned down 😭. The store and lodge across the street is fantastic and has amazing cookies!

Clean campground with camp host's that do an excellent job. A little loud so I would get to the back as much as possible. 40 miles from the campground to the North Rim NP. Beautiful drive. Clean restrooms. Worked well for us. We were in the National park most of the time.

Great campground - clean and very well maintained. Nice large spaces. Hosts Sharon and Russ were great - helpful and friendly. Watch for the kaibab squirrels - very beautiful with white tails and dark gray bodies. The 24s

Clean, isolated camp area with large campsites, potable water and clean restrooms. Lots of rvs, trailers and tent campers. Also pet friendly for leashed friends. Definitely a beautiful place to stay and explore. Check out the amphitheater too! Wander into the woods and enjoy breathing in some fresh nature.

We stayed here for 2 nights in late-May 2024 and used it as a base to visit the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was an easy, early morning, 45 mile drive to the North Rim. It is a nice US Forest Service campground. We were happy to have reserved site #45 for our camper-van, as the campground was pretty full. The site’s gravel driveway was flat. The campground is near the highway, but there was not much traffic noise at night. The vault toilet was very clean and well-stocked. Highly recommended!

This National Forest is maintained by a contractor and they do a wonderful job of keeping it clean and tidy. The bathrooms were the cleanest I have ever seen and the host provide a jug of hand sanitizer right outside the door. There is absolutely no garbage anywhere in the CG. And all the sites are level. We paid $13 for a night with our access pass.
